Is the president of the Czech Republic a pen stealer?

As just about anyone who's ever worked in an office can attest, one of life's most festering annoyances are people who don't return pens that they borrow. Now it appears as though Czech Republic President Vaclav Klaus may be one of those people, and the citizens of the nation he rules over are none too pleased about it.

You see, Klaus, whose most notable prior controversy was probably his flat rejection of climate change science—a position that he even appeared on Glenn Beck's show to tour—was caught on video coyly pocketing a ceremonial pen during a recent visit to Chile. What's more, the brazen stylus heist took place in full view of the media during a ceremony to announce a trade agreement. The video shows Klaus clearly admiring the pen, then slowly moving it into one of his jacket pockets as Chilean President Sebastian Pinera speaks to the assembled members of the media.

Now, Reuters is reporting that some Czech citizens are accusing Klaus of being a kleptomaniac. But the president's staffers claim that he had every right to take the pen—and that he was, in fact, acting entirely in line with established Czech state protocols. "We at the Prague Castle always give such a pen to delegations, along with a notepad," presidential spokesman Radim Ochvat told the news agency.

You can watch video of the incident, complete with graphics and a humorous soundtrack, below:

We should be applauding him for helping to save the Czechoslovakian taxpayers from having to buy him a pen. After all, he's not doing anything that other politicians don't do on a larger scale.

Sorry to comment on that detail, Czechoslovakian Federation seized to exist peacefully after Constitutional procedures on the 1st of January 1993. There have been two independent countries in the Center of Europe since; Czech Republic and Slovak Republic. We, Czechs and Slovaks, still get along with each other having many joint projects though (only when we play ice hockey against each other we are more emotional..:-). And BTW..our division happened without the war...you see...;)

There is a big movement in Czech Republic, now Czech citizens collect pens, markers, pencils and crayons for their president that he does not need to take what he is not his on his offical visits abroad. There is Facebook movement also when people comment and organize themselves for other activities to support their "poor " president to help him to avoid such "difficult situations" .;) Of course, it is meant as a practical joke since Czechs have good sense of humour. However, me as Czech, after watching this video clip I was laughing a lot at the beginng, however, as same as I felt embarrassed by 1st man of my country since I knew it would be on first pages all over the world..

All right,be mercifull with our Old Man!

Erhm. Thanks Pilgrim...could you perhaps add few more factographic details on the history of this region ..

it's a tiny place compared to big countries like the US, China and Russia but , it's still independent republic ( since 1918 ).

It was a part of Austrian-Ungrian Empire right before and Prague was once a rulling capital of Europe ( well, that was at the time of Charles the IV. in 14th century )

Shortly , it's a tiny Republic in the geographical middle of Europe ( still bigger than Luxembourg )

and please....

it was never a part of Soviet Union . I can understand that if someone expected from me detailed knowledge about the politics and geography of Papua-New-Guinea ( sorry again ), I'd be lost.

Thanks :yo:
