Bloody wierd to say the least!!! I think the same thing happened in New Zealand ... afterwards, large holes started to appear...

Japan is SINKING into the ocean - liquefaction of ground continues!

I wonder when that above film was shot. March 11 or later?

Near where I live, about 20 years ago there was a huge earthquake and parts of the valley floor fell 12 feet. Water sprouted up everywhere flooding farmers feilds for a time. There is lots of subterranian water around here.. It eventually receded... and that liquid earth thing happened in some areas. A real estate lady offered us such a feild at a very good price suggesting that we build about 18 inches of concrete foundation above ground, but we said no thank you.

That Japan is preparing to sink there is no doubt. This has been going on for ages. The important question is when?

That seemed mild to what happened with liquification in Christchurch. Much of Christchurch is build on a swamp. The places where liquification was really bad was reclaimed land. I guess the water is claiming it back!! Grey liquid ooze bubbled up and flooded large areas. My friends lived in one of the worst affected areas. Their house was bought off an owner/builder who built it out of wood, on piles, and the house sits quite high off the ground. It has a upstairs mezzanine floor. Most houses were devastated round them and they had very little damage. One ornament fell over, but didnt break. So, that to me says that piles or pole houses are a good investment in case of earthquake, but then again, when it comes to a tsunami that aint going to help either if you are beside the sea.

Yes you are correct Carmen, My sis lives in Brighton...same deal, tho piles and poles are also subject to unstable foundations due to liquidfaction, any foundation. My view is that the newer collapsed buildings in the CBD was due to foundation de-stabilization due to liquidfaction, rather than upper structural failure. Ground sunk, building sunk on one side and pancake event followed.

It is also resonably common through out the world, not so rare.

Good find Vicking...

Comonsense would tell you that this is 'Not a Good Thing', the damage, land-shifts and liquification coupled with the continual after-shocks spells only more Trouble for the Japanese.

One can only Hope & Prey they can get through this...because the land is literally falling apart.

Agreed.

Japan prophecy aside ... do a search on sinkholes and you will find them (dramatically in some cases) worldwide.

I think its a futile exercise planning on rebuilding Christchurch or Japan. Because I think these earthquakes are only the start. I very much feel for the people of Japan.

I'm hearing ya! CHCH cannot sustain another event like that, financially and emotionally and god forbid if ever there was a quake east out in the Pacific...CHCH is mosty at sea level or thereabouts.

Japans situation is beyond words, made CHCH look like a picnic.

I have friends and family who live in Christchurch and it amazed me just how calm and collected they were. Also very practical. They were too busy helping neighbours and friends to worry too much about themselves. My brother-in-law even said he felt guilt because they were unscathed when so many others were dead or injured! They were amazing. The people of Japan also display a wonderful calmness in the face of such terrible tragety.

Some of my friends I have warned of the dangers of staying put in Christchurch, but some I havent because I know its pointless. Their minds are set. Change is just too scary. To Love and Allow is an important consideration when sharing future knowledge.

i have family in japan. a cousin of mine is living and working in tokio with his wife and two kids. when the big earthquake was he was working at the 20th floor. that was surely not funny.
(it was good that he rides to work on his bicycle, so he could at least get home rel. quickly.) - actually i don't get it, why he still is there, as he had some options, which many Japanese surely not have.

Yeah, its weird isnt it!! Some of the friends I know, definitely have options, but still they stay. Maybe its their destiny!

mhmmm in such a case i would try to get exactely where i'm now - 600m above sealevel, surrounded by mountains.
i think it has a lot to do with the mainstream media - people have too much trust in their so called leaders. - they're being told, that it's half as tragic as it may seem.
saw a video on reuters - a politician was eating those vegetables - and a guy besides him with an analog radiationmeter - obviously they just took out the batteries - because that meter seemed to constantly stay below zero ^^ - and didn't show any reactions.

Yes, we are high, and in the mountains. Its interesting how some people are responding to warnings of dangers to come. Its as if their sub-conscious, their intuition has been informing them.

They are in agreement. Not that they are going to "do" anything, but they are in agreement! Also some of my extended family are having dreams of disaster to come e.g. dams bursting.

to me, two things are hilarious - the face of the dude eating the tomato and that radiation-meter - i really had to joke about this - sry - i know it shouldn't be funny - but watch for yourselves :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wB1mpx7vpBI

found it on youtube, but they've cut out the part, where you could see the meter. the reuters -clip shows that it seems obviously not to function at all. (beware that it is nearby-grown, as the original site-text makes clear.)

actually the beginning is quite funny, too - the nuclear crisis is stabilizing ! - wtf - to my understanding stabilizing means, that it's not getting worse. mhmmm

i mean after they reached level seven - the worst case scenario - they come with the "relieving" news, that it's !slowly! stabilizing. - FAIL - if this clip wasn't cut - it would be a triple fail news report in my opinion.

This is not a good sign, I like to see our politicians here in Australia to help some of this people and have them settle here in Australia.

Almost as good as Obama swimming in the gulf after the oil spill (or so we were led to believe) with his daughter.

It's all good ... everyone back to the beaches. Bring your mastercards.

:fish2:

Or baby bush opening up the stock markets within a week of 9/11 and telling everyone it was safe to come back to downtown nyc.
