Mod-edit: The following is satire, as are all stories on CBS Breaking News (http://cbsbreakingnews.com/about). Thanks, bilko (Post #17 (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?18793-Japan-to-End-Whaling-CBSBreakingNews-fake-news-story&p=201353&viewfull=1#post201353), below) for noticing. Sorry. -- Paul.

"The top spokesperson for the Japanese government announced that Japan will no longer hunt and kill whales for research.

"Effective immediately, Japan will no longer conduct scientific research on whale populations which require capture and dissection," said Chief Cabinet Secretary Makoto Inoue, speaking at a press conference in Tokyo. "The Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has revoked all permits for whaling research."

Asked about the motivation behind the sudden announcement, Inoue said, "It cannot be denied that that whaling severely and unnecessarily damages the image of Japan in the international community, due to the strong sentiment against whaling in many countries," speaking through an interpreter. "There is no longer any economic need for Japan to obtain protein from the whales, so it would be irrational and pointless to continue catching whales."

Inoue added that government budget restraints do not justify significant expenditures for whale research.

Japan has been killing about 1,000 fin and minke whales each year under scientific research programs sanctioned by the International Whaling Commission, selling the meat as food on the domestic market.

Under the 1946 International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling, countries are allowed to issue permits to kill whales for scientific "lethal research," a loophole exploited by Japan for large-scale whaling operations. Japan had been maintaining that the program was needed to estimate whale populations and study their breeding and feeding habits.

A staunch pro-whaling advocate, Japan had come close to overturning a moratorium by the IWC on commercial whaling at the IWC's annual 2010 meeting in Morocco.

Since the 1986 moratorium on commercial whaling, Japan has figured prominently in the annual battle between pro- and anti-whaling nations at the IWC convention meeting every year. While repeatedly denying anti-whaling countries' accusations that it offers aid to commission members in return for pro-whaling votes, Japan had been openly recruiting supporters to the commission, one recent example being the tiny land-locked nation of Laos.

Calls to Japan's whaling body, the Institute of Cetacean Research in Tokyo, were answered by an official who declined to comment, and calls to Kyodo Senpaku, the fishing company which operates the whalers, were answered by an unidentified man who shouted harshly in Japanese before hanging up.

It is unknown what political considerations prompted this sudden and unexpected announcement. Japanese public opinion is largely indifferent towards or in support of whaling.

Anti-whaling activists appeared stunned. "Well, it's certainly good news," said Annika Schroer of Greenpeace. "

What excellent news!!

Good news for the whales, bad news for those who enjoyed eating them...Seriously though is it possibly that someone thought the tsunami was punishment for their treatment of whales? Therefore decided to stop whaling to save Japanese lives?.....Maybe I'm reading too much into this.

Well I didnt see that one coming, I thought they would hold to it for as long as they could. I guess if they want help in their situation they had best not leave any reason for hostility. Now, how to keep them from going back to it later?

A lot of whales are probably going to die from high radiation levels on the ocean waters around japan anyway.Maybe they are feeling guilt now that such horrible catastrophe happened in fukushima,i feel for the whales and all the people of Japan right now it saddens me :sorry:

This is wonderful news. Very out of character considering their normal stance on this. Would love to know the reason for the seemingly sudden change.....let's hope it lasts.

Warm wishes...

Japan needs the PR right now, and... to their economy, the public stopping of the whaling is worth more than the whaling itself was. By a notable margin.

Or perhaps the Sirians have made their presence known, with regard to Karmic Return. (Sirians are stated by some to many as being of water origins-- and overall..cetacean in nature and type.)

Please read the 'About' section of the linked site. It is fake and designed to produce a why not scenario.
I was overjoyed at reading this and horrified to find it was a fake.
Astrid or mods will you please apply this to the title so as not to mislead people.

2. Why Not? Stories

There are three of these on this site. These are stories which cause people to instantly identify them as fake, and exclaim: "that will never happen!"

Japan to End Whaling
Israel to Dismantle Settlements, Recognize Palestinian State
United States to Destroy All Nuclear Warheads
My answer is, well, why not? These stories have the following in common: they address a senseless status quo, which could be rectified with just one decision by someone in power. A few phone calls from one person would be enough to transform any of these stories from satire into real news.

In a hastily called press conference, the Prime Minister of Israel has announced that the Jewish State will start dismantling all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem immediately, and that it is ready to recognize the Palestine as a sovereign country.

The announcement drew shocked gasps and a tumultuous reception from Israeli members of the press corps. Prime Minister Netanyahu was able to answer only three questions before being escorted out of the press conference room for his own safety.

"The State of Israel was born out of oppression against the Jewish People," the Prime Minister said, speaking in English. "We cannot morally justify inflicting the same oppression on another people, our Palestinian friends."

"What's been happening over the past few decades is just so senseless, so stupid, so counterproductive" Netanyahu added. "It's unbelievable that we didn't do this sooner."
