The biggest Italian labor federation's call for a one-day general strike has brought transportation to a standstill and created traffic across Italy's major cities.

The nationwide strike on Friday was called by CGIL to protest Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's tax reform that is widely seen to unfairly affect salaried workers, AP reported.

Public transport was disrupted in the morning and air traffic was interrupted by stoppages scheduled to last for four hours in the middle of the day.

Italy's national carrier Alitalia had to alter its departure schedule to ensure domestic and European flights as well as intercontinental service.

The main strike rally of the day was held in Naples, located 177 kilometers (110 miles) south of the Italian capital of Rome.

"Today's strike is aimed at shifting the balance of force with regard to a government which thinks that nothing about the redistribution of incomes in our country needs to be changed," CGIL leader Susanna Camusso said.

Friday's demonstrations, which took place in more than 100 Italian towns and cities, were part of the CGIL's fourth general strike since Berlusconi won the election in 2008.

The Italian prime minister has pledged over the years to put more investment in job creation, and to improve the lives of the working class.

However, union leaders say Berlusconi's center-right government has reneged on its pledges.
