Easily distracted people may have too much brain

Those who are easily distracted from the task in hand may have "too much brain".

So says Ryota Kanai and his colleagues at University College London, who found larger than average volumes of grey matter in certain brain regions in those whose attention is readily diverted.

To investigate distractibility, the team compared the brains of easy and difficult-to-distract individuals.

They assessed each person's distractibility by quizzing them about how often they fail to notice road signs, or go into a supermarket and become sidetracked to the point that they forget what they came in to buy. The most distractible individuals received the highest score.

The team then imaged the volunteers' brains using a structural MRI scanner. The most obvious difference between those who had the highest questionnaire scores – the most easily distracted – and those with low scores was the volume of grey matter in a region of the brain known as the left superior parietal lobe (SPL). Specifically, the easily distracted tended to have more grey matter here.

Kind of makes sense.

We get lost in our own mind-maze.

Interesting article.

Thanks Carmody!!

Nah, this'll just be an excuse to get us all lobotomised... you know, to help us all concentrate lol.

Ha.. yeah well that too.

Bound to be an agenda somewhere,

just follow the funding of who sponsored the study.

"It's all good we have a drug all ready to fix this!"

Related to the subject but not really, Big Heads (http://www.sciencenetlinks.com/sci_update.php?DocID=166)...

yep, at the end of it.... they seem to want to lobotomize those who have been labeled as having AAHD (or however it is spelled)

I concur, they just want to negate disobedience ^^

I doubt if there is any clear evidence linking brain size to intelligence. The brain (imho) is just a receiver linking the mind to the body, it’s not necessarily a storage bin…but probably more like a Childs remote control toy car. The brain is the CPU of the body. Its purpose is to regulate body functions by deciphering the signals coming in from your higher self. If certain areas of the mind are damaged then certain parts of the body will cease to function properly, but this doesn’t necessarily mean the person’s awareness and/or wisdom will be affected. But maybe their ability to express their thoughts will be hampered, which is evident in people like Steven Hawkins.

Further more, most Savants suffered head injuries in the earlier part of their lives, or have been through a strong epileptic seizure…which suggest to me that this damage could have linked certain areas of the brain, providing a unique conduit to pure consciousness.

We often depict big headed people as intelligent beings through childhood conditioning. Growing up watching cartoons like “The Leader” or “Mega Mind” (very bighead characters) will certainly place these ideas into the psyche.

Scientific researchers are still clueless to how the brain correlates to the I.Q.

I take an XL hat but I suck at Math,,, go figure.

If someone's worth can be summed up by their IQ then I think its a sad world we live in. There are so many other levels to our brain and no matter what any scientist says, creativity can not be scored with an I.Q. test.

The smallest measured brain mass of a complete functional human brain in the guiness book of world records, belonged to a world class mathematician. so that sort of comparative is not going anywhere.

Math can be done on higher levels than the 'slow' brain ;-) Who even needs one... lol!
