I think that you will find that is what is known as a Sun Dog (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_dog). As far as I am aware they are caused by an approaching cold front (cold mass of air) over the top of a warm mass of air which pushes the cold mass of air high up into the atmosphere and the water vapour in the air freezes to create ice crystals.
They are usually a good sign that rain is on the way.
I saw one last week at around midday and by 6pm it was raining. I have found that they are best viewed using polarised sunglasses.......don't look directly at the sun
They are an amazing natural phenomenon and a pretty good weather forecasting tool.

Yup, I saw another one today as well.........looks like rain again later :(
I forgot to mention in my previous post that you do also get them around the moon (http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=moon+halo&hl=en&safe=off&prmd=ivns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=ebbOTfnCJZKz8QPsjdnjDQ&sqi=2&ved=0CDIQsAQ&biw=1876&bih=1039), usually a full moon. A lot easier to look at ;)

There was a better one in Calgary yesterday (same day) ...;)
They definately are far more common then they used to be. When I was a kid I spent my whole life outside, and to see a good "sun dog" (as we called them) was indeed a rare event where the atmospheric conditions needed to be "just right"
Now I see them regularly - not even a special event anymore ... chemtrails likely have something to do with it.

A good point DeDukshyn, I hadn't really considered that...........they do seem very common nowadays.

I have seen this before when I was a teen living in South Africa... that was long long ago. :ohwell: At the time it was considered a rare event, the sun produces a halo in the sky, which almost looks a little like circular rainbow. Its interesting if they are being seen more often.
