I'm wondering why so many of us feel the need to hide behind avatars and not show our faces?
I don't know why I have followed suit and not used a picture of myself but I think if so many people do that there must be good reason. I just can't figure out what that is?
Wouldn't it be nicer if we could all see each other? :P

You do raise your eyebrow wonderfully well! I can see how that would intimidate people ;)
I don't get the privacy thing really. What is bad about people knowing what you've said? I mean what's the worst that could happen?

it's not just about privacy, sometimes I think that avatars can let you express yourself better than mug shots, it's also human nature for us to judge others (many times inadvertantly) by how they look, and using an avatar can keep the focus on what is being said, on the spirit of the person and not just on their looks :)

That's 3 now with the face shame reason...it makes me sad to hear you guys talk like that! If you tell yourselves you are ugly, old etc you are damaging your cells because they respond well to positivity and your thoughts affect your being (and I mean that in the kindest possible way-no intent to offend or upset).
Go on now all of you and look in the mirror and repeat 3 times "I am beautiful, I am beautiful, I AM BEAUTIFUL" and then shout it out the window!

I'm a musician and have always desired to play with a paper bag over my head. Really. I play from so deep within that I would like the focus to be on the music and not what I look like. If you listen, you know me. When I go to the symphony, I listen with my eyes closed...you can hear so much more that way.
Here I don't even have to wear the paper bag! For some reason I hear what someone is saying much better without the distraction of a picture, and would like my words to be more important than my appearance.

Ever had a cyber stalker? dozens of them in a month, year in and year out? Or strange men sending you photos of their lower anatomy because omg THEY have something that they think YOU haven't seen before. Or people threatening to kill you for your views. Or slander you all over the net or plaster your website with maniacal ramblings. Ever had some yob threaten you by stating they were sending their psychiatrist *who knows Judo) your way to take you out because they don't agree with the opinions you've expressed (that was yesterday on Facebook).
God help me I attract weirdos....don't ask me why.
Or five thousand Christians bawling for your head. Or vegans who feel obligated to inundate your email box because you didn't watch yourself during a conversation and admitted to eating a steak.
. By coincidence some yob found me on my space recognizing my house on my profile. He lives down the road from me so he sends me a PM to say "Hi Neighbor." and then gradually gets more sexually explicit and basically states he's going to break in one night and service me.
If someone asks my name I will tell them in private...personal information up to a certain extent, but only after I've used my best discernment regarding their character and their motives. This forum is wide open to the public and just because everyone seems nice in here doesn't mean they aren't looney toons behind the monitor.
And basically THEY are safer not knowing who or what I am because their toddling little minds may feel compelled to be a busy body and then someone will get hurt and it won't be me.
It's up to me to keep me safe.

Hi Indigostar, my avatar is of my own eye, photoshopped to display a tree where the iris is, but I quite like the anonymity of a non real life avatar. In my reasoning it stops people getting attached to image or labelling and therefore distorting their opinion or changing their attitude due to something that is perfectly irrelevant.
Without that supeficial image of our image to give influence I think we are more likely to be honest.
Another reason is that I'd feel a bit creepy to think people in my physical life might know who I was and be reading what I write, but me not knowing about it. It feels a bit peeping tom-ish.
And another reason is - if I say something really incriminating about the queen or someone. Knowing what I look like will make it so much easier for her to track me down. (OK, that one was a teeny little bit tongue in cheek, but not completely - I will have to hope she doesn't search this site to closely is all )

As 9eagle9 put it, there are some looney toons in the world, and some of us have had our fair share of personal photos detracting from views and the conversations we prefer to have. I have no inclination to share my image, and I would use this opportunity to clarify that there is no welcome mat at the end of my "zip line" ethereal or otherwise. I don't want to come across as cold or indifferent to the Avalonians with whom I have enjoyed great moments in time, but I would say that when we respectfully decline to comment, be seen in our skin, or open any other doors to perception, it is best to respect those boundaries. These lines may be drawn as much for the seeker as the sought.

I love having beautiful(IMHO) art as my avatar or profile picture. It's not an act of hiding by putting art instead of my own picture. It's far far more complicated than that. As are most things... Much more complicated than a quick 'surface' thought will encompass.
For those who want to see what I look like, I have posted my picture here (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?15799-Faces-Of-Avalon&p=222602&viewfull=1#post222602), in the faces of avalon thread. Hi,
Who said; "If an image worth a thousand words, then a symbol worth a thousand images".
To me, it is symbolism of the projection of myself. Freud gave a word for it :)
But if you want to see me, which talks a lot about myself too, here it is. I have not many pictures of myself. This is my favorite, with my son at 1 year old. I was still ok.

Today, my elder son is 5 and my hair are scattered, my eyes asleep, my mouth is falling and my cheek follows. So, I wouldn't bother showing it on the web. Ah! I'm kidding... or not :( :)

My avatar is a natural phenomenon that I have never seen any time other than when this photo was taken. I woke up around 6:00am and looked out the window to that. It is not a lense flare effect at all but what the sky really looked like just before the sun broke the horizon -- an inverted cross of light in the sky ... it was stunningly beautiful. A member here told me in a PM that it meant something ... but I have no clue as to what ...
For a pic of me, go to my profile or through the "Faces of Avalon" thread here ...

I suggest those who wish could change their Avatar to their real face for 24 hours, (or 12, or 2 or whatever they wish!) then those who want to, can see who we are!
Thoughts?

I'm not famous by any means or measure. But I have three (now three) businesses I'm involved in. Any combination of my name and one of those businesses usually results in about 100 pages of hits, the first 40 pages -totally dedicated hits. I'm sure there are some members in a similar boat. (not rich, either, I just love what I'm doing)
I'm a 'problem' to my partners to some degree, always causing some form of contention when I'm on a board or forum. I'm not supposed to be on any forums. I'm the guy who purposely lets out bodaciously loud liberal and free spirited farts in a elevator full of republicans.

No hiding, the separation between my personal self and Zeta here means i get less effected by the energies of others,
thus keeps me steadier and more focused to do my work here.
Zeta here is one of my power animals, she's the main one i work with when i'm online.
She acts as a kind of "gate keeper" and buffer.

Great Thread IndigoStar. Good posts everyone.
It would seem that it,s a personal joice situation.
Some want privacy, and some want to express themselves.
I think I,m on the fence on this one.
If I found an avatar I liked I mght use it, just for fun.
And, if I could figure out how to get my mug on this contraption, I wouldn,t mind doing that either. ( PC illiterate).

I like to show off my own artwork as it is an extension of who and what I am. Also, does it really matter what we all look like? We're just humans, expressing our thoughts and feelings here in this forum. And really, I could be a 90 year old man, but post up a picture of an attractive bikini clad female and get more attention that way? Avatars are just that, and extension of you.
7505
Today, my elder son is 5 and my hair are scattered, my eyes asleep, my mouth is falling and my cheek follows. So, I wouldn't bother showing it on the web. Ah! I'm kidding... or not :( :)
Thanks for the thread!
Namaste, Steven
Might have been 'confucius' with the words somewhat different... 'A picture paints a thousand words'
But yes I agree with you Steven ... they have more impact ... anyway thought I would follow suit with you ... have a drink on me!
steve i believe it was telly savalas who said that! the next line was why can't i paint you... (lyrics from if.)
Hi, I am going to use the opportunity to invite everyone to be my friend! My profile page is a desert with tumbleweed roaming across its windy barreness and so I very rarely go there! I dont have an avatar becasue I havent figured out what I would like . . . I love the colour blue so I would just have a picture of that but its probably overkill!

Well, I thought about this quite a lot. I think there is no harm in showing who you are here, if you want to. I decided to add my photo to my profile, then if people need to see me, they can!
Anchor, your pic is great! Sincerity and light abound, thank you!

God this is weird - As you can see, I've set my photo as avatar, and I'm swinging from feeling happy about to to incredibly emotionally vulnerable. I think I just need to go with this, feel the pain when I need to. This is like opening my inner being to the whole world, which is something I've never done, through fear of being hurt.
I'm going to share something with you : 9 years ago, when I knew my marriage was breaking up and I was going through a very very low state, I'd planned to kill myself, I knew exactly what I was going to do, and I remember jumping out of bed with complete resolution to end it all, and the first thing I saw was a copy of this photo on the wall, and I knew I couldn't do it, I couldn't betray little-me, the one who was so gentle and loving and had beautiful dreams for his life.
I've only told 3 people that story.

The state will find us anyhow if it wants. But I think that my avatar represents me and my curent state of mind much better than picture of me.
I think the avatars we choose for ourselves can be very telling. In that sense, we're hiding nothing :-)

Let's not kid ourselves, have you noticed, there is no privacy! So some of us are augmenting our own image, for our own reasons which are legitimate, and I've decided to just be me 'cause it's all I really know how to do anyway, besides I'm the best one at it as well, and finally absolutely no one could do such a fabulous job at animating this bag of monkey skin like ME, MYSELF, MY SHADOW, AND I!!!!!!!

One of the greatest signs you are on the cusp of beginning internal change is the feeling of being suicidal.
Part of you has to die before the new can re-assort from the old, add the new and then the new you slowly comes out, over years. The whole process is years in the making and I will admit there are parts that are horrifically painful. (this is pain and pleasure in the truest sense, your neural connections (synapses) are broken in the chemicals involving pain and your synapses and connections are created in the moments of euphoria and pleasure. This means you literally can build yourself a big brain and higher connections through meditation.. SCIENCE ----FACT--write this up and tape it to your fridge. You have to think about it or your ego will force it's loss from your recall function.)
When I went through a a stage where I purposely renegotiated or realigned my life contract, I went to the bottom. The very very bottom of the well. I went all the way to pre-birth, in the womb and started fresh.
It was the most horrific time in my life. It was the most invigorating time in my life. I fear it, I never want to go through that again..and I eagerly await it's return. The utmost of horror and the utmost of the highs and open enlightenment-connection. when one goes all the way, they get a pretty big package. I never want to do that again, and I'd give anything for it to return. I do know how to get back. But it takes concentration and effort.
What I'm saying, is that most of us, at times in our lives, we can find resonance with your post and sympathize. What I'm saying is....there is more in there, if you care to look.... :p
that was a great post Carmody. i didn't think it was possible to feel so hopeful and enthusiastic about feeling so emotionally/mentally/spiritually unstable;) but i have to say you really reached me there in that post. thanks for that.
i think most of us here have felt "different" our entire lives. and at times we pay for it dearly. perhaps we're overly sensitive. i don't know. point is, you're not alone in your experience mariposafe. i've been there, and i suspect many others here have too. thanks for having the courage to share your story and picture!

I'm a musician and have always desired to play with a paper bag over my head. Really. I play from so deep within that I would like the focus to be on the music and not what I look like. If you listen, you know me. When I go to the symphony, I listen with my eyes closed...you can hear so much more that way.
<snip>
My grandmother always closed her eyes at the symphony :) Sometimes a gentle snore would issue out of her mouth. I couldn't hear it, but my sisters would start to giggle, Aunt Peg would look mortified so I could figure it out lol.

Hi Indigiostar,
Or could our avatars be presentative of how we feel, mine shows clone troopers from Star Wars the Clone Wars in action, why?
I am a face in a crowd important but not full of self importance, the righteous and able will help the weak, and have courage individually and strength in unity on their quest to free the world from enslavement.
Corny yeh I know, but you have to believe in greater good if you are to strive for it. Fiction inspired or not.

I thought i would share with you why i use this Avatar, I laid the flowers myself in front of this Vishnu Statue, which was one of around a hundred different ones outside a Vishnu Temple in Gokarna, India, This temple is for Brahmans only, No westerners or non Brahmans allowed.
While i was walking towards the Temple this Statue stood out for me and as i laid flowers next to it the priest that looks after this small temple asked me why i had chosen that particular statue. I answered saying I had just experienced a wonderful event through the Naadi Shastra and this statue felt like what i was going through in my life, trying to embrace my negative experiences bring them into balance and transform them into light.
The priest said " come " he gave me a white Lingi to ware, asked me to wash my hands, feet and face, and allowed me to enter the temple, He done Pooja just him and i. I felt honoured. He then asked me what my experience with the Naadi Shastra was, we sat down and i shared my experience, He told me to write it all down, which i have now. You can read it here if you wish. http://goldring.wetpaint.com/page/Mother+Mary+~+by+Billy

Oh, Billyji, thank you so much for posting this. And also bringing your site back up, I visited it once when I first came here, then later lost it and couldn't remember what it was called nor who posted it. I will now make a bookmark.
The building in my avatar is where pictures of uk members of interest ie. everyone here, would be processed for future recognition. "intelligent" airport cameras and what not etc. I see no value in facilitating that task for tptb. shrugs.
When I was still living in England I was told one day by someone in the know about a building where 200 + employees went to work every day tapping telephones all day long.
When that was supposedly illegal. Big wake-up call for me back then. Imagine how many more tappings are going on now that the world has computers. I was also told that astrologers in particular were blessed with these probings.
Now I don't worry too much about it anymore. What will be, will be. The divine has a protection team...special ops for earth. But you're right, dan i el...why make it easier for them. Still, I find your avatar a bit Kafkaesque...the "Castle"...

I just read your story billijy. Absolutely beautiful. I am not a believer in religions, but what you experienced is exactly it, no division, and the saintest is often the simplest, from any background, it is not important. True love is..
I also saw Mary's last house in Turkey. I went to the stadium in Ephesus where John, and later Paul were giving speeches to the public (listen to the last concert ever given there, it was breathtaking at night, and the sound!). And I prayed on St-John tombs. For a non believer in religions, quite a detour! What surprised me was how much I was touched by the experience.
Thanks very much for sharing.

I've thought about the Avatar pictures and secrecy too. For me it's about
a little privacy. And I think the forum isn't about the looks, it's about
who we really are. Like our uncle Roach said:

My avatar is the "Real" me. Can't take any time worrying about privacy.....I live in the US...no privacy here. I believe I am safe...therefor I am.
I also believe that when we see someone's face...we get a deeper appreciation for thier words. We are trained from birth that when we talk to someone, we look into thier eyes...no?
Don't worry....be happy.....I am.
