From the ESA website. Picture named “Ophir Chasm”.

Objects are located directly over the plateau in the left low corner of the picture.

If you take a photograph of almost any large rock formation here on earth and study it closely enough you will find any number of faces or shapes that look like they could be man-made but the simple truth to the vast majority of these pictures is that they are naturally occurring formations. I don't mean to discourage you Straydog but there are websites purporting to show pictures of buildings, statues and a vast array of of other oddities on the moon or mars and in general people will see what they want to see.

An interesting picture for certain, one think always puzzles me though, if indeed they are buildings, why would they build them right out in the middle of nowhere and apparently at the top of a cliff?

@Artycal
Thanks for your reply :pleasantry:
I’m not getting “discouraged” at all.
First: I can see now that the “Name” of my post is a bit “bold”. Sorry for that. It should have been “Looks like towers?”
And what goes for “personal believes”
Yea, I think there is a strong possibility that there have been civilizations on Mars a very long time ago, and further that a horrible event viped the planet almost clean.
Mars is literally crowded with strange “things” showing up here and there, that defiantly is worth a closer look IMO.
By this I don’t want to start a discussion whether if “the earth is flat” again :peace:

@Daft Ada
Thanks for your reply :pleasantry:
I think there is a strong possibility that there have been civilizations on Mars a very long time ago, and further that a catastrophic event viped the planet almost clean. Therefore only a few remains can be seen spread around in “odd” places seen from our point of view.

@For those interested
Have a look at a pick named “Hale Crater West”, also found at the ESA site.
It’s smudged out artificially. Anyone with a little knowledge of picture processing can see that.
Still there is very strange structure like patterns spread out all over the crater clearly visible.
When this was discovered by the public, the “*.tif” version of the pick was removed from the ESA site. Leaving only the “*.jpeg” version back, which is far less detailed etc.
Now, some claim that these patterns is caused by “pixilation” making funny patterns to show up in a picture etc . . . But it’s still you can see the same patterns occur at the same geographical spots on the next picture named “Hale Crater North West”. That should not happen if the patterns are caused by pixilation ore “development” errors as far as I know.

Have a nice weekend everyone :tea:

Hi straydog. Good theory mate, but why would an event powerful enough to wipe out all live on mars and destroy everything in sight leave some structures standing apparently un touched? i am thinking more along the lines of them being more recent. If they are mining facilities or processing plants then I guess they need to be out where the raw materials are, however desolate that may be. Or maybe they are not as isolated as they appear. Maybe they are linked to everything else underground.

I agree. Those structures in the “Ophir-Casm” photo look pretty healthy to me. Although it’s hard to say not having been there my self hehe :)

There are a lot of very interesting theories of underground bases etc on the Moon and on Mars.
Look at the “glass tubes” etc. (Not in “this” photo)
And it seems logically to me that If someone is there now, its for collecting mineral/metal resources.
There are some more strange artifacts in the original photo. If you examine it closer you will see “remains” of very similar structures “airbrushed” out spread around in the area.
I think that maybe the reason that the “towers” in the zoomed cut in my first post are not airbrushed is that they are very hard to find, that they were overlooked.

The tubes could very well be something akin to the ETT "maglev trains" which are being developed on Earth?

Straydog, ive downloaded the jpeg of the Ophir Chasm from the site, and am looking around the lower left quadrant but have not spotted anything discernible? Perhaps you can point out to me, or has the picture been changed?!

It does look very much like that has been some blurring/smudge techniques used in portions of around the centre plateau :-/

@Baelsfire

You’ll need the “*.tif” version. You’ll find it at the same link I posted earlier. It’s a lot more detailed. It’s a large file, but worth it.

Here is a link to a picture where I highlighted the spot where you’ll find the “towers”. http://i680.photobucket.com/albums/vv163/viper759/Mai%202010/Ophir_Chasm-2.jpg

Let me know if the link doesn’t work etc . . .

@Swami

I also think that there are buildings/structures on Mars. I recently seen a video on youtube with evidenve taken straight out of google mars, It has me convinced.

Hi smat
I just saw that video today, what a coincidence :thumb:

If you haven’t done it already, check out mister Hoagland’s “work” available at YouTube. That guy has some spooky insight regarding the Moon and Mars . . .

Hard to say, really wish I knew :confused:

In general most artifacts on Mars seem ancient.

Regarding the photo in my first post those reminds me of an old castle/fort.

Well Mars was inhabited (above ground) till it lost its atmosphere. I guess it is inhabited below ground now (certainly there is enough ice water and ways to make a breathable atmos underground).
The 38% gravity is enough to hold an atomosphere, the trick would be to create one. The easiest way would be to trigger Mars massive volcanoes and the some tiny fraction of the material thrown up, contributes to to make an atmosphere. I'm pretty sure you won't find life on any planet anywhere which doesn't have volcanoes (hence the godlike status they hold in ancient times).
So, nuke Mars from orbit and wait. :p

Hi Jake thanks for the link. I downloaded the image from the site and imported it to photoshop. I did the darken and contrast thing plus a few others. In my opinion it is just pixelation due to it being fairly lo resolution and probably a few other things.
I have worked with images in my profession in various ways for over 20 years, about 15 of them using photoshop. I wish it was signs of civilization but i don't think this time. :(

Awww.. You have just broke my heart. I have not heard anyone dispute this pic. But some pics are too good to be true. All of the NASA photos of Hale Crater do not show the same details. I appreciate it... Still.... eyecandy...

Okay, so now I have a question. Why is this the only European Space Agency High Resolution Photo that has this 'pixelation'? Shouldn't they ALL have the same flaws?

Exactly. It's just like those supposed "buildings" people saw under the water of Lake Titicaca and other South American Lakes. It's simple image degradation/pixelation.

I had a quick look at the north west view.. i think it was. and it was much the same. probably taken from the original image.. which would have been much larger. :)

It did have the same flaws that is why i think it is from the same image..

(Jake is staying up late to look at Mars images on the ESA.INT site) now I am REEEEAAAAAlyyyyy curious... I am checking out other photos. so far, I don't see any of the flaws we are talking about, except the 2 photos of Hale Crater.

Yea that was the only two images i looked at. and i think they had the same flaws...
i will check again tomorrow at work where i have them downloaded.

And if i can ever figure out how to post them i would be happy to.. :)

What about the dark areas that seem to be shrubbery covering the geology ?

Love these Hi-Res shots.

Anybody else notice the low attendance on PA ?

Smat I would say Sir, if you are convinced by that video, you have some weird imaginations. I saw absolutely nothing at all in entire video to convince me of any such nonsense.

I agree with this post.

Those effects look like a low resolution texture being stretched over a computer generated surface.

I have a hard time accepting that image as an actual photo of the terrain.

Just looking at the entire image it looks like it has been cropped out of a 3D model of Mars. This is very prone to artifacts.

PS: From ESA site:

This perspective view, taken by the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on board ESA’s Mars Express spacecraft, shows Crater Hale on Mars.

Looking here for info about HRSC cameras: http://berlinadmin.dlr.de/Missions/express/kamera/kameraeng.shtml

We have a 3D model generation as suspected:

Additionally there are three stereo-channels (Nadir, Stereo 1 and Stereo 2), which are used for the extraction of 3D-data, which result finally in a digital terrain model. The principle is to get a downward, backward and a foreward-view of an object. From this different views one can derive 3D information via photogrammetry. Furthermore there are two photometric-channels, delivering data for the physical analysis of the Martian surface.

We have a lot of data loss due to compression:

The main antenna has a limited data rate and has a maximum of 8 hours per Earth-day for contact with the ground station. Thus there is a need of data reduction. This is performed by two methods - pixel summation and compression. The pixel summation creates averages of adjacent pixels. The 1X1 summation keeps the full resolution. The 2X2 summation creates an average of a square with an edge-length of 2 pixels. This decreases the data volume by a factor of four. Further options are a 4X4 and an 8X8 summation. The second method is a JPEG based data compression. After extensive tests with sample data, the compression factor has been determined to a variable factor between 4 and 10. This enables a compression of the data at acceptable losses in quality.

All the above pretty much invalidates the conclusions in the video (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?2092-Obvious-buildings-on-Mars&p=223398&viewfull=1#post223398).

Sorry Jake! :)

PS2: After reading the whole thread I would say that: yes, we should expect the same "flaws" and "artifacts" in all images created with an HRSC (High Resolution Stereo Camera). Those are not "actual pictures" but rather compressed 3D models created via some algorithm (photogrammetry) that are prone to create "visual noise" (artifacts that are not really there)

As an analogy: trying to find pixel level "buildings" in photos is like using 10 inch ruler to measure 1 nano-meter. You can attempt to do that, but you instrument is nowhere near precise enough to make your data meaningful.

Hi interesting debate just been listening to Andrew Basiago on tuesday nights 17/5/2011 coast to coast show he was on for half of it .He didn't talk about Mars on this occasion but about his time travel experiences with Chronovision at DARPA.I mention him because he claims to have been on Mars as we all know , he is very articulate and as a practicing attourney just the type of person you would have thought we needed in the alternate community.I bet a lot of people think hes just playing out a delusional fantasy and don't take him seriously. He has spent hours scanning a small area of the Martian surface and come up with all manner of artifacts/animals/vegitation which he has published on a on line paper. 'The Discovery of Life on Mars' 40 pages long full of colour pictures and explanations of what he claims to see there.I personally like the ape like figure on pages 5,16 & 34. Its a fun read and takes a bit of concentration to focus on what Andy is pointing out and some of it is interesting. Jake don't despair I watch 'Time Team' every week and the lines in the video look similar to airial photos of crop marks in fields where Towns/villages once stood.Better still the ancient alian thread that was on here the other day about underwater cities, regarding the twin cities off the N/west coast of India on the radar scan showed all the outlines of the mud brick streets and Buildings very clearly, and the ones on Mars looked similar to my eyes . On Kerry's blog theres a photo and reference to what Arthur C Clarke thought to be trees on Mars. just a few thoughts cheers steve..
