View Full Version : Food shortages for Australia ...

I received this in an email today and felt I should share it with all Australians who are interested in signing the petition and passing it on to others to do so, also:

"Today it was revealed that key scientists have walked away from the government's Murray Darling Basin Authority process in protest.
Right now the Murray Darling Basin Authority is in the final stages of recommending how to deal with the water crisis in the Murray Darling. But shockingly, scientists tell us that the Authority is preparing to announce environmental water flows so low they won't save our nation's food bowl. Worse still, the Authority has cancelled all independent scientific review of the Government's Murray Darling plan in an attempt to cover up its lack of environmental credibility.
The Wentworth Group of Scientists have just resigned from the process in protest1 - but they need public support. That's where GetUp members can make a difference. In a few weeks the Basin Authority will announce its plan. Let's create a huge public petition to the Environment Minister, Tony Burke, demanding that the Government bring back scientific review before it's too late:
www.getup.org.au/campaigns/murray-darling/petition/save-the-basin (http://www.getup.org.au/campaigns/murray-darling/petition/save-the-basin)
The Murray Darling Basin has been sucked dry by decades of over extraction. Despite recent rain and floods the Murray Darling Basin is on the brink of ecosystem collapse. Already over 90% of the floodplain wetlands have been destroyed along with native fish and bird populations.
Without a basis in science the basin plan could lock in the death of over a quarter of the iconic river red gums on the Murray. This would spell disaster for the internationally recognised wetlands on the river.
Scientists and sustainable famers can't fix this situation alone. Their voices are being ignored. But if we all join with them, we can't be ignored so easily. Sign this petition to call on Environment Minister Tony Burke to bring back the science:
www.getup.org.au/campaigns/murray-darling/petition/save-the-basin (http://www.getup.org.au/campaigns/murray-darling/petition/save-the-basin)
We can't let the opportunity to save our most precious waterways be wasted by bureaucrats wanting to take the easy option and ignore the science under pressure from the heavy irrigators. Please join the petition to help back up the scientists.
Thanks for taking action,
The GetUp team
PS - Click here to read the full statement the Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists provided to GetUp explaining why they pulled out of the Murray Darling-Basin Authority (MDBA) process. "

Just to compare food prices between EU and Australia, you will notice that something is wrong. I mean 1 kg of bananas 13 AUD... I know there has been a cyclone, but there are plenty in rest of the world...

After having lived in Australia for 10 years, I can't believe Australia could ever face food shortages. There's plenty of other farmlands in Australia that could always produce enough food for the population.

Its got one of the world's strongest economies, & could always buy food - especially from nearby NZ.

Hi Mulder, unless New Zealand also had food shortages.

It seems to me that the elitists are trying to bring about food shortages world wide. We had the floods and cyclones up in Queensland and the floods in Victoria not all that long ago that destroyed quite a lot of crops.
Now they are going to tell us some crap about the Murray Darling that is going to justify food shortages.

And there might be enough food for everyone - if they can afford it.
In the face of things, it's not looking good - after reading the above email it smacked of elitist interference in order to carry on with their plan.

Hi Jackovesk - Get ups position is: "An independent movement to build a progressive Australia and bring participation back into our democracy."
I'm not particularly intersted in them as a political system (don't much trust any political system anymore), but I did sign up for their news letter when I first came across them.
This one just happened to get my attention.

Thanks Teakai for bring this to our attention. It's true, this an extremely serious matter and people of this Australia really need get off their f**ing a*** right now and stop this crap. This just an excuse to open the doors for imported food from especially China of all places. The fact that these born and bred Aussie politicians are allowing this sh*t to happen to their own people when its already resourced to produce it's own food in every facet just staggers logic and common sense.
I just hope this petition can ignite something positive, but regarding the organization 'Get Up', I hold certain reservation against their agenda. I actually marched against the carbon tax in Canberra a couple of months ago with the other 'blue rinse' extremists, only to be aware that Get Up was very vocal and active against those taking part in the demonstration. They make a very strong stand in support of this tax, so who and what are they really supporting?
I dont affiliate with any political organization other than the people like you do.
I just hope we find the right strategy and right people to stand against this diabolical agenda unfolding as we speak. Regards W

To make a recommendation, wouldn't they have to base it on some real facts/statistics etc?

Australia is lucky because at this time of year the Northern part of Australia is nearing peak fruit/veg harvesting season and when their crops start slowing down, the Southern part of Australia enters their peak harvesting season.

In saying that, the Murray-Darling plays a big part in irrigation.

Hi Wiremu - thanks for letting me know about Get up and their support for the carbon tax.

I signed the above petition because I felt it was really important - not to support Get up.

The above email is the first I've received from them that I've ever read.

I'm not sure what you mean, Oceanz? Do you mean the government will have to have some sort of justification?

BACKGROUND

GetUp! is an Australian political organisation that campaigns on issues important to its members. It was launched in August 2005, the week that the Coalition took control of the Australian Senate.

GetUp campaigns are community based, and are primarily coordinated through the Internet. They involve email, its website, and traditional media. GetUp is a non-profit organisation, and states that it relies on donations from individuals, organisations, unions and community groups for funding.[2]

GetUp describes itself as "a new independent political movement to build a progressive Australia".[3] They identify campaigns based on the interests of its members, which are usually issues such as "social justice, economic fairness and environmental sustainability".[4]

HISTORY

Founded by Jeremy Heimans and David Madden, the GetUp.org.au website was launched on 1 August 2005 along with a television advertising campaign. Inspired by the American website MoveOn.org.

https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/GetUp!

WHO ARE Jeremy Heimans and David Madden?

David Madden is an Australian entrepreneur associated with progressive causes. He is a co-founder of GetUp! a web-based political movement, and Avaaz.org, a global advocacy movement.

Madden grew up in Canberra and served as an Army officer before studying Arts and Law at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. Madden served as president of the University of New South Wales Student Guild after defeating the Labor Left candidate in a landslide.

After winning the University Medal in History, Madden was awarded Fulbright and Frank Knox scholarships to study at Harvard University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in law and completed his master's degree in public policies.

Madden has worked for the World Bank in Timor Leste, and for the United Nations in Indonesia. He is the co-author of Imagining Australia: Ideas for Our Future (Allen & Unwin, 2004).

In 2004, Madden was one of the founders of Win Back Respect, a web-based campaign against the foreign policy of United States President George W. Bush. The following year, together with Jeremy Heimans, he co-founded GetUp!, a similar campaign against the recently re-elected Howard government in Australia. Madden and Heimans subsequently co-founded Avaaz.org.

In 2006 Madden and Heimans were named one of the "Top 10 People who are Changing the World of Politics and the Internet" by Politics Online and the World E-Government Forum.

WHAT IS Avaaz.org?

Avaaz.org is an international left-wing civic organization established in January 2007[1] that promotes activism on issues such as climate change, human rights, and religious conflicts.[2] Its stated mission is to "ensure that the views and values of the world's people inform global decision-making." The organization operates in thirteen languages, and claims to have more than eight million members in 193 countries.

The name Avaaz (Persian: آواز)(Devanagari:आवाज ) was derived from the Persian/Hindi/Urdu/Punjabi/Marathi word for 'voice'. Avaaz.org was co-founded by ResPublica, an American community of public sector professionals dedicated to promoting good governance, civic virtue and deliberative democracy, and MoveOn.org, an American non-profit progressive public policy advocacy group and political action committee. The organization was also supported by Service Employees International Union, a founding partner, and GetUp.org.au. Avaaz's individual co-founders include Executive Director Ricken Patel (a Canadian citizen living in New York),[4] Virginia congressman Tom Perriello, Australian progressive entrepreneur David Madden, Jeremy Heimans (co-founders of Purpose.com), Andrea Woodhouse, Tom Pravda, and MoveOn Executive Director Eli Pariser.[5]

ACTIVITIES

Avaaz is managed by a team of campaigners working from Switzerland, Brazil, the United States, Argentina, and the United Kingdom. They communicate with members via email, and employ campaigning tactics including online public petitions, videos, and email-your-leader tools.

Purpose, a for-profit company, states on its web site that "Purpose creates 21st century movements. (Agenda 21) We look for ways that movements can help solve major global problems. To do this, we work with some of the most exciting players in the new green and social economy to help them get to scale faster and some of the world's biggest brands to mobilize their consumers for significant social impact," and goes on to say that its principals co-founded Avaaz.[11]

At the 2007 G8 conference, Avaaz.org protested against the "U.S. administration [for its] 'wrecking tactics' and failure to agree to specific, binding global goals" when it came to the mitigation of global warming.

WHAT & WHO are MoveOn.org?

MoveOn.org is an American non-profit, progressive[1] or liberal[2][3] public policy advocacy group and political action committee, which has raised millions of dollars for candidates it identifies as "moderates" or "progressives" in the United States.

MoveOn.org Financial contributors

According to an article in the Washington Post dated March 10, 2004:

"The Democratic 527 organizations have drawn support from some wealthy liberals determined to defeat Bush. They include financier George Soros who gave $1.46 million to MoveOn.org Voter Fund (in the form of matching funds to recruit additional small donors); Peter B. Lewis, chief executive of the Progressive Corp., who gave $500,000 to MoveOn.org Voter Fund; and Linda Pritzker, of the Hyatt hotel family, and her Sustainable World Corp., who gave $4 million to the joint fundraising committee."

Woah - thanks for that, Jackovesk. So - with the petition - do you think that will do anything in regard to hiring independent scientists to look into the murray Darling solution - or is it all just total rubbish?

This feels like a really dumb question after what you've just posted. Maybe I need to look for another petition to sign :)

Thanks Jackovesk. I believe that Get Up also have affiliations with the unions, whom if you haven't noticed recently are taking firm positions in support of the carbon tax - the dogs they are!
You seriously have to wonder if these politicians and leaders of these pro active groups are genuine "walk ins" once they are 'ceremoniously inducted'. In fact I don't think that's extreme at all.
How is it, that you can win the heart and emotion of your electorate and as soon as you're "in" you immediately do the very opposite of why they put you there.
Haven't you noticed our so called f***** leaders have ramped up their lying agenda of recent times, especially since that goose Rudd was elected. All they do now is continually kissing the a***s of the UN and signing over new treaties with them, and further diminishing our sovereignty to the a**holes.

Hey Jacko,

You are a bloody sleuth! I was sucked in by Get up a few years ago, but their stance on climate change just gave me the pip (polite word, eh?). I've sent them many an email on just this and never get a reply (never expected one). I've always instinctively never trusted them from then on. Always thought there was more behind them to what was presented. Thanks Jacko for all the information. Justifies my intuition. Much appreciated.;)

To make a recommendation, wouldn't they have to base it on some real facts/statistics etc?
Why?

This is political, so one never lets the facts get in the way of a good arguement. It seems we are getting a 'Carbon' tax based on IPCC pseudoscience and I for one don't expect the level of public discourse / knowledge over this particular issue to improve in quality any time soon, or for that matter any of the purported science trotted out as justification!!

Please don't get me wrong, I would love to see this issue resolved on the basis of 'real science' but since the gubmint in this case are the paymasters I feel that truly unbiased advice won't be forthcoming from that quarter anytime soon. It is also unfortunate to note that the drought / flood cycle regime in this country equates to the average carreer span. ie those telling us in the 70's we were heading into another ice age are not the same ones proclaiming we are now all due to be toasted.

As for GetUp, it seems to me to be yet another propaganda arm of the fabian socialist movement out playing games in the 24 hour news cycle.

NO NEED FOR FOOD SHORTAGES - GROW A GARDEN.

Turn your lawns into veggie patches. Re-cycle your water onto gardens. There is no need for shortages if we all grow food. Where I live many people are starting small gardens either on their own land or on someone else's. Save seeds. Survival depends on gardens in the future

I started a vegetable garden last Spring. I'm a beginner at it. I'm pretty sure we wouldn't have survived on what I managed to grow so far - but I have learnt a few things - like don't overcrowd your tomatoes.
The zucchini was brilliant - I had more zucchini than I knew what to do with.

NO NEED FOR FOOD SHORTAGES - GROW A GARDEN.

Me too - several 1.2m² raised beds :)

Nearly finished them. Meanwhile, we had some garlic, asparagus, artechoke and some self seeded tomatoes this year from other parts of soil.

Grow your own food, or eat "poisonous" plants that grow abundantly in the forests

Thanks all for this important info.

The govt here has been screing us for generations. Lets not even get into the stats regarding home ownership in Australia...

Slowly but surely, more ownership is going offshore, mainly China.

The fact that it continues to happen, really doesn't inspire me to be confident in the future of this country.

I have seriously considered moving O/S, but its getting to be a case of tbetter the devil you know.

Ownership is the same as boarders, from space there are no boarders.... in the end does it matter which country OWNS what, its the people that matter, make sure every plant you put in your garden can be eaten, ten points to anyone who is growing anything themselves, it is better than eating irradiated imports like we have to in the UK....
