Steps
1
Know what they are. The 38 flower remedies are non addictive and can be used with any other medicine, they can also be used to support the emotions whilst taking common medicine. The remedies themselves are preserved in brandy, which acts as a non-active ingredient. This means that the remedies can be kept for a very long time.
2
Learn about their past. The Bach flower remedies are a system of 38 flower remedies that were developed by Dr. Edward Bach, a pathologist, homeopath and forward thinking Harley Street doctor. Dr. Bach used the flowers in his garden at his home in Oxfordshire and matched them up with specific emotions. The remedies have been used ever since and are still popular today. The Bach centre in Oxford (where Dr Bach lived) is still visited by many today and the trustees at the centre have tried their best to preserve the house and garden where Dr Bach resided.
3
Learn how they are made. There are two methods of releasing the energy of the flowers, the first is called the sun method, where flowers are picked and immersed in water. The boiling method involves boiling the flower in water. This liquid acts as the mother tincture and is diluted in equal amounts of brandy. The stock bottle is diluted further in brandy and is distributed into small Bach bottles for individual use.
4
Try to understand how they work. The flower remedies treat the individual, not the cause of the disease or the symptoms of disease. Dr Bach believed that our emotions can cause physical problems, this is apparent today where sufferers from IBS, insomnia and other stress related ailments are on the rise. This frame of mind is not new, as many people believe that a healthy mind equals a healthy body.
5
Who can use them? The remedies are a brilliant tool for getting through your everyday emotions and struggles. As there are 38 in total, there is a variety of remedies available and you can mix your own for each situation. Rescue Remedy should also be kept on hand for any stresses or situations where an immediate remedy is needed. The remedies are regularly recommended by vets and practitioners of alternative therapies. They are also used to treat distressed animals on their road to recovery. Pregnant women also take them, to help ease the emotional rollercoaster caused by pregnancy and they are also popular for parents to give to their children.
6
How do I take them?Taking the remedies is easy. Firstly, know what the remedies can do for you. Read the information above, visit a few websites and make sure you know how they work.
Secondly, choose the right remedy for you. You can do this in many ways, visit a practitioner or even try to match up your feelings to the emotional symptoms.
Get your hands on the remedies! Your practitioner may be able to make up a combination for you, or you can borrow some off your friends or buy them for yourself.
Decide if you want to make an individual combination bottle or from the stock bottle.
Make up your remedies! For a single remedy place 2 drops in water and sip at intervals. For a combination of remedies, please point below.
7
Expect a wide array of results. No one feels just one emotion, but often a mixture. Hate may be present along with jealousy, despondency or whatever else the individual feels. For situations where a variety of emotions are present, a combination of remedies can be mixed up to save on time. Mixture bottles usually come in 30 mls, two drops of each chosen remedy is added into the mixing bottle. You can combine up to seven remedies at one time in the mixing bottle, then, top the bottle up with spring water adding some brandy as a preservative. Take 4 drops from this bottle a minimum of 4 times a day.
8
Learn what is the 'rescue remedy'. Rescue remedy is a combination of five flower essences it is used in situations where assurance and comfort is needed and is often used in emergencies. Hi MariaD,
Thanks for this! I had never known what these essences can do. I have a VERY 'nerve wracking' situation coming up - a very important exam. So I will be getting some of this for that and will be taking it. Since it's been used for this purpose since the 30's, I trust it will help me.
Again, gracias!

There are lots of videos promoting the benefits of using flowers in essences, aromas, oils etc , which gives us a wide range of choices...still, keep in mind that these are general directives. One has to try and observe how one reacts.
Then see if you fell good with the choices made.
Sometimes, an adverse reaction is also part of the «clearing».

I know this thread is headed Bach Flower Essences, but there are several other flower essences not mentioned here .... for example the California flower essences called FES. These are made by the Flower Essence Society in America. I think they are based in the Sierra Nevada foothills. If you live in America I would look into these.
I use FES (along with Bach, Australian Bush Flower essences and Living Essences of Australia).
Other flower essences to consider:
- Alaskan Essences (from Homer Alaska).
- Spirit in Nature Essences, previously known as Master's Flower Essences (from Nevada, and the oldest flower essence line outside of the U.K.)
- Pegasus Flower Essences - a pdf file can be downloaded from this site: http://www.pegasusproducts.com/flower_essences.html
- Perelandra Essences, located in Warrenton Virginia, founded by Machaelle Small Wright
- Green Hope flower essences (also based in the U.S. - in New Hampshire)
I don't have any experience in using the above essences, but I have heard (and tend to believe myself) that if you live in an area, the essences made near you are more effective. I know one practitioner who finds Bach works best for her and her clients, and she was born in the U.K. Although I use other essences, I prefer the Bush Flower essences myself and I was born in this part of the country.
Flower essences are useful for pets too. This may have been mentioned already in one of the video links posted by Maria above ... I'm not sure.
For example Heather is great for separation anxiety, so it's useful if you have to leave your pet with someone for whatever reason. Mimulus is good for timid pets. Impatiens for a hyperactive pet (you know ... the dog that drags you along on the leash).
There are many books about flower essences. I have several/many myself (too many to list here). As a starting point, my recommendations for anyone interested are these:
- The FES 'Flower Essence Repertory' by Patricia Kaminski and Richard Katz can be purchased directly from the company website. It tells you all you need to know about these essences.
- 'The Bach Flowers of Today' by Mark Wells - a small book, but covers all you may need to know about the Bach flower essences.
- 'Findhorn Flower Essences' by Marion Lee. There is also an explanation in the introduction on how to make your own (and it's easy). Maria mentioned this in post 3 above.
- 'Australian Flower Essences for the 21st Century' by Vasudeva and Kadambii Barnao for a thorough explanation of the 'Living Essences of Australia' flower essences.
There are 3 books I would recommend for Australian Bush Flower Essences:
- 'Australian Bush Flower Remedies' by Ian White. A small booklet that explains what each essence can be used for.
- 'Bush Flower Essences' and 'Bush Flower Healing' by Ian White. These are beautiful books in which Ian gives detailed accounts of each essence - what they're used for, case histories and also describes in some detail his journey into the bush to find them. These are my 2 favourite books on the subject.
The philosophy behind the use of flower essences (vibrational medicine):
Medicine that contains high-frequency subtle energies is what is known as vibrational medicine. Vibrational medicine has an action on the subtle-energy bodies and at the emotional, mental and spiritual levels. By treating imbalances that are present at an emotional, mental or spiritual level, we can prevent and heal dis-ease on the physical level.
According to Gurudas of the 3 vibrational medicines – flower essences, homeopathics and gem elixirs – flower essences are the most effective vibrational medicine for treating the subtle energy bodies in particular, in addition to the meridians and physical body.
When a flower essence is taken orally or absorbed through the skin, it initially travels via the bloodstream, then it settles between the circulatory and nervous systems. The polarity resulting from the 2 systems creates an electromagnetic current and the flower essence then moves directly to the meridians which as we know are the interfacing mechanisms between our physical body and subtle energy bodies. From the meridians, the vital force of the flower essence is transmitted to the chakras and subtle-energy bodies and then once again through to the physical body via amplification. This process allows the vital force of the flower essence to be “magnified” and is more easily assimilated – i.e. the flower essence reaches the ‘out of balance’ body systems quickly and in a form that is utilised.
The silica in our body (contained in hair, nails, bloodstream and in the subtle bodies) is composed of quartz-like crystalline structures. At the correct frequency, these crystalline structures send the vital healing energies of the flower essence to the appropriate subtle energy and physical body sites. This can be likened to the way audio frequencies are transformed from the process of radio waves striking a crystal in a radio.
For more about this read: Flower Essences and Vibrational Healing, Gurudas – Cassandra Press (1989)
P.S. It's a shame this thread has found its way under the books, videos, articles section of the forum. Would it not be better in the alternative medicines section?

You know, I am very curious to know just how Dr. Bach figured out what each flower essence was...
Nearing, this is known as the 'doctrine of signatures'. This is where the plant's shape, colours (so chakras) and environment it grows in are noted. For example a plant that grows well in extreme heat would be useful to treat conditions of heat and dryness, like hot flushes for example. The shape of the leaves might resemble a body part and would be used to treat ailments of that part of the body.
I know Ian White also tunes psychically into the plant .... perhaps Bach did as well.
If you have a herb or plant that grows freely near your home, take it as a sign to use it.

Thank you, Wings! That is great explanation. I am fascinated by this subject now. Thanks to MD for sharing!
I am going to look into this subject in depth after I take my exam. I may add Flower Essence Practitioner to my credentials as it certainly is a way to help without harming, which I am always looking for.

I am so happy to see this thread. Have used Bach Flower Remedies and other flower essences for myself throughout the years.
Recently I took in a dog who has developed hot spots - we are struggling with this now. I suspect their is an anxiety issue involved. I have been giving her a big drop of Rescue Remedy at night to help her (and me) sleep. There must be a Bach Remedy that would help her with the hot spot problema. Any ideas??
Also - does anyone remember a line of similar drops that were made some years ago and included fruit essences?? Have not seen them for awhile - remember using a banana one with success at that time.
Thanks and Blessings to all! LuzOne

Detergents or bleach on the floor, dog shampoo, carpets, insecticides for grass flies and bugs, etc .... make allergies and hot spots on dogs. I had a Cocker Spaniel and had to stop using those things.
I think a calming floral would help...maybe ?!

@LuzOne - lots of companies produce fruit essences including banana - try FES or Pegasus (they make banana essence). I use the FES one. Greenhope Farms and Perelandra also make fruit essences.
Your dog .... I agree with Maria .... check that fleas/insect bites is not the cause. Crab apple in Rescue remedy should help, but more specifically for anxiety maybe chamomile essence (in herbal medicine it's often used to treat skin conditions as well as to calm). Garlic essence may help to keep fleas away in pets if that is what has caused the problem.
