View Full Version : Quitting smoking

Its bloody hard, but I think I've just got a handle on it now :)
can't wait for it all to leave the system, clear lungs etc.
If anyone is struggling with quitting, I want to tell them what helped me:
It's really simple - I started going out for long morning walks instead of lighting up, and then when I get in, I'll have a bit of munch and then keep those naughty fingers busy by playing guitar or writing etc.
It's all simple stuff, but I hope this helps someone a bit! :)
Quit the damn ciggy's - the government want you to smoke them and maybe that is incentive enough to quit!

well I have 4 or 5 friends that quit this last year using electronic cigs...
They start with a nicotine cartridge and then stop replacing it so they are going through the motions just inhaling air...
China owns their tobacco industry, so they allow electronic cigs to be made but not sold in China...
The successful quitting ratio is too high.

As an ex heavy smoker and a retired Hypnotherapist I would say
Dont make a big deal of it.
You sleep 8 hours so 1/3 of the day you are a non smoker.
If you think its hard then you are right your programming yourself to fail.
Run out of cigarettes last thing at night.
In the morning say "I wont have one just now"
Every time the notion comes to have one-- thats what you say.
Change your routine.
Keep it simple.
The nicoteen leaves the system very quickly and does not need replaced.
Avoid nicoteen, gum, patches etc --- they dont work.
Best wishes
You can do it

When I gave up smoking I borrowed a give up smoking hypnosis tape from the library - watched it once - and it worked. I haven't had a cigarette in 17 years and haven't wanted one in that time either.
I admit - it was a very easy way out.

Thanks Rocky, do you know if there are "brands" or types that are better than others. I might give them a go. I see peeps at the airports inhaling probably nothing actually, but might just be the answer.
There are some you still light and inhale / exhale with is it smoke or steam coming out. Not sure - but if anyone who knows of a link or somewhere that has a good type would be much appreciated.

Hi to all you soon to be non-smokers
I am a practising Hypnotherapist and I specialize in STOP SMOKING. I have developed a programme to help smokers quit. I require 4 sessions.
The first 2 sessions are devoted to STOP SMOKING. The 3rd session is devoted to HEALING, for the mind, body emotions and soul.
The fourth session is for future programming. This is more important than all the other sessions. It is a downloaded imprint into your subconscious a map of your future journey. Where are you going. What is it that you want. The two most important destinations in your future journey is HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.
You are moving forward into the future. Not going back into the past. If you see yourself as a smoker then you are imprinting into your subconscous mind that this is what you want for your future destination. THe subconscious is powerful and is awaiting your commands to help and assist in making it possible to achieve your desires. So we must be very careful in how we address our commands.
Start saying to yourself - I AM A NON-SMOKER - I LOVE BEING A NON-SMOKER 20x in the morning and 20x before bed. This will help you get started.
But the real change has to happen in the subconscious mind. The subconsious mind is the equivalent to the harddrive of the computer. By just thinking that you want to be a non-smoker with the conscious mind is like talking to the monitor of the computer and asking it to change programmes or download new ones.
To gain access to the subconscious (where you can change programs) you need to be in the alpha state. (In the morning and going to bed at night you are already in the alpha state). The deep alpha state is accessed by relaxation. When you are in a deep relaxed state you can then quaratine old programmes or download new ones.
In the case of a smoker the old smoking programme was to quaratined and made redundant. Then download a new healthy programme in its place.
Also another part of the healing of the smoker is not the fact that you are smoking, the real focus is on why you are smoking.
Deep underlying esteem issues. The healing process deals with housecleaning. Throwing out the old rubbish, the old unwanted behaviors, old ways of doing things, old negative ways of thinking. Throwing them all out.
Then taking contol of thoughts, actions and behaviors. Like guarding the front door of your house and not allowing in negative people who abuse you. Only allowing in good positive friends who are supportive of you. Only allowing in positive thoughts tht assist you.
It is really re-training your mind to watch for the negative incoming and preventing them from entering your mind. This is easy to do.
When you become aware of a negative thought intruding just turn that thought into the opposite. "Oh I am such a failure" into "I am such a success" "I am a wonderful person" etc. Remember the subconscious mind does not know the difference between fantasy and reality. This can work in your favour. Thinking of yourself as a non-smoker. A person who detests cigarettes.
Also keep in mind - THIS IS GOING TO BE SO EASY. IT IS EASY TO GIVE UP CIGARETTES.
For the future you need to learn some relaxation exercises to deal with stress, anxiety. These will never go away. These are some of the reasons that you smoke. When you are thrusted into a situation that is unpleasant it is easy to reach for a cigarette, drink etc.
If you learn to relax, take control of your thoughts, mind then you have some control over your body and in effect have some control over the external situation.
I hope you find this helpful. If you need to know more, please do not hesitate in PM me anytime.
GOOD LUCK FOR YOUR FUTURE AS A NON-SMOKER FOREVER

I find and employ ways to improve my health daily. I enjoy relaxing, meditating, and exercising. I love myself unconditionally.
I accept and approve of myself. I allow myself to be me. I am whole, perfect, strong, powerful,
I understand that -
A.
I Always accept responsibility for my health. I Accept responsibility for the damage that smoking is doing to my body. I understand the full nature of the harmful effects of smoking. I am Always conscious of what I can do to assist my body in cleansing, healing, and revitalizing.
B.
Be myself. . I am unique. I Believe that I can and will STOP smoking and be willing to explore various avenues of healing and ways to accomplish this. I will listen to the advice of healthcare practitioners and other well-meaning people, then I will make my own decisions based on the information I have obtained.

I will cleanse my mind, emotions, and body of harmful drugs, nicotine, negative thoughts, emotions, or chemicals. Nicotine and drugs act as poisons in my system; toxins form a part of chronic, degenerative disease caused by smoking.
I have the choice. I can choose to quit smoking and I can choose to be sick or healthy. I cannot concentrate on sickness and health at the same time. Two opposing thoughts cannot live under the same mental roof at the same time.
I now speak positively to myself through affirmations. Positive, directed spoken words are thoughts that create invisible, wondrous power and work to create my desired result--being smoke free and in perfect health. My body, mind, and soul are connected. What my mind thinks, my body feels. Emotional pain causes physical pain and, in time, this can cause physical disease.

Aw, thanks loveandgratitude. I did go to a hynotherapist, who guaranteed it ..... $500.00 later however - oh dear. Also did Alan Carr looking at the reason why and have taken Champix (which works, but when you stop the cravings are horrendous)
I think Im gonna need some DEEP hypnosis (like brain washing). If anyone know someone in Sydney, please let me know. I have visions of a manchurian canditate / mkultra programme for me. Its ridiculous that I cant quit. I know it must be easy - plenty of people do this. If someone could just wipe that addiction completley out of my brain, like rewind to before I started I would be happy. I wonder if anyone can actually do this????

there are some people who can quit very easily using only the most simple techniques. and there are others who cannot. it is part of the neural integration in the brain. what the neural receptors pick up and enjoy, they want to keep. for some, that is what is holding the quitting back. the neuron receptors have to be retrained or find another implement of enjoyment. keep trying different methods, one may work for you.

Haha Corson, I wonder how my brain can possibly derive pleasure from it. It stinks, provides no pleasure, is antisocial, and bad for you plus as you say expensive. Mind you I cant understand herion addicts, so non smokers prolly wont understand us.
I do get some warped sense of justice thinking that all the taxes I pay when I buy them - more than compensates for the health care I might need in the future - LOL
i have always looked at it like this: we are all going to die from one thing or another, mortality is the end factor for our species, i choose to smoke, so i know what and who my killer is.
I was talking to an army chaplin a couple of weeks ago (when I nipped out of my hospital bed and ran down for a gasper) I must have looked guilty coz he said not to feel too bad because he had learnt over his career that 100% of non smokers will die. Interesting perspective I thought.
Its interesting that they ban almost all substances because they are allegedly "bad" for you, and yet continue to allow the public purchase of tobacco products. Doesnt make sense really

Hi New dawn,
Similar thing worked for my sister after 15 yrs of smoking. She replaced it with exercise and never looked back - ending up running marathons and triathlons. It really gave her something to focus on and I think this helps a lot. If you take something away it's a good idea to replace it with something else - something good.
All the best and you can do it!
Warm wishes.....

I often say to my clients (they do not like it) that would they be offended at someone cutting themselves in front of them? Well, smoking is like cutting, but on the inside where no one will see it. Herion, pills, alcohol, cigarettes, cutting, all of it is about pain. People are in emotional pain. Something is bothering them. This is what needs to be healed. Why would you hurt your body?
Resolving deep issues, then staring to love your body. Sending love to your body, to each organ. Say I love you heart, I love you liver, I love you kidneys, etc. Healing your, owing your body and taking responsibility for your own well being.
The reason why some people can quit easily is about how much trauma, how much programming (parents smoking), self esteem (I am not good enough), TV programming when young (ads - look at that beautiful woman, I just want to be like her when I grown up), (Marlboro Cowboy, He is a real man, I want to be a real man) etc.
When smoking was made legal for woman in 1920's Bernays hired college woman to take part in a parade and smoke in front of all the people. They pushed the image of woman being free. If you smoked cigarettes and were a woman you were free. So programming is part of the curse thrust upon us.

Really understand that you are smoking 3,500 known poisions, and with chemical reaction that makes 300,000 unknows chemical reactions. Study this. Get to know what is in a cigarette.
I just want to mention - I also thought that "well, we all have to die of something"... After 30 years of smoking I can attest to a couple of things besides lung damage I wasn't aware of back in the day. (i welcome any comments on my "qualified" not 20/20 observations)
1. It's not about the teeth going yellow (because there are all kinds of whiteners on the market) - it's about the teeth deteriorating from the inside through lack of full blood supply (?)
2. A faster-than-non-smoker deterioration in eyesight
PS: If I summon the guts to quit now, I want to thank you all for the encouragement but I would also like to vow to NOT become one of those obnoxious ex-smokers. That being said, I have to say most ex-smokers I've come across are not the obnoxious kind :panda:

Heres some info for you to start to digest......
The Dangers of Smoking Cigarettes for Smokers
Introduction
What's in a Cigarette & Disease: Chemicals, Cancer and Heart Disease
The main ingredient in cigarettes is tobacco. Tobacco is a green, leafy plant that is grown in warm climates. Farmers use many chemicals to grow tobacco. They use fertilizers to make the soil rich and insecticides to kill the insects that eat the tobacco plant.
After the tobacco plants are picked, they are dried, and machines break up the leaves into small pieces. Artificial flavorings and other chemicals are added. Some chemicals are put in cigarettes to keep them burning; otherwise, they would go out.
There are over 4,000 chemicals in cigarettes. 51 of them are known to be carcinogenic. A carcinogen is something that causes cancer. Cancer is a disease that often kills those who have it. There are many types of cancer: breast, lung, larynx, stomach, prostrate, kidney, leukemia (cancer of the blood), etc. In all kinds of cancer, the cells keep dividing and forming new, abnormal cells. These cells are not normal or healthy.
Our bodies are made up of thousands of cells. In a healthy person, new cells are made only when the body needs them. In a person with cancer, the abnormal cells destroy the normal cells, invading them like an army. If cells divide when new cells are not needed, a growth or hard mass forms. It could be small like a pea or large like a grapefruit. A cancerous growth is called a malignant tumor.
Cancer usually kills a person when it spreads to other parts of the body. Sometimes cancer cells break away from a malignant tumor and find their way into the bloodstream. They travel to another part of the body or organ like a kidney or lung. There they start multiplying and dividing and form new cancerous tumors. For example, if a woman who has a malignant tumor in her breast does not have it removed while it is small, part of the tumor might break away and go into her bloodstream. From there it may travel to her brain and give her brain cancer.
Chemicals in cigarettes and cigarette smoke are known to cause not only cancer but also other serious health problems. Many of the chemicals are poisonous. If a person ate one pack of cigarettes, he/she would die.

Sources: Dr. Joel Dunnington, Tobacco Almanac, Revised, May 1993.
Three of the most widely known chemicals are nicotine, tar, and carbon monoxide. Nicotine is a strong poisonous drug. It is the main ingredient in insecticides or bug sprays. In its pure form, just one drop on a person's tongue would kill him/her.
Tar is the oily material which remains after tobacco passes through the filter. When a smoker inhales, a lot of the tar sticks to and blackens the lungs.
Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas. A smoker inhales this gas which is also found in the exhaust of a car. This gas interferes with our respiratory (breathing) and circulatory (heart, arteries, and veins) systems. When we breathe in air through our nose and mouth, the air passes down the windpipe (trachea) and bronchial tubes into the lungs. The cilia which are made up of small hairs and mucous (a sticky fluid also found in the nose) help to clean this air as it moves down and into the lungs. The cilia remove small pieces of dirt, dust, and germs.
When a person smokes cigarettes, the carbon monoxide in the smoke gets into his/her blood stream. This reduces the amount of oxygen going to the heart. In addition, the chemicals in cigarette smoke narrow the walls of the arteries. With less oxygen passing through the arteries, the heart must work harder. Blood pressure also goes up.
The result is that the heart may not receive enough oxygen rich blood. When this happens, the heart may stop beating, and part or all of the heart muscle may die. This is called a heart attack or coronary arrest. If a large enough part of the heart muscle stops working, the person dies.

I'm an old hand at quitting smoking, it's quite easy, just did it again a few weeks ago. But I'll tell you what, the withdrawl symptoms of nicotine cold turkey are chicken s**t compared to cold turkey from oxycodone. Going through that hell on earth once is all it takes.
Cheers,
Fred
I used to joke that I was an expert at quitting because I had done it so many times.
This time, after years of wanting to quit but procrastinating or wimping out for countless "reasons", I just decided to quit and I announced to my son, "this is my last cigarette". No cutting down, no nicotine replacement, no intense cravings and no withdrawal symptoms whatsoever. I was amazed how easy it was. Eight months later, I have not smoked another cigarette. Most of the time now, I find cigarettes and the smell of smokers quite repulsive. Only a few times have I had fleeting thoughts that I would like to smoke a cigarette.
I feeeeeeeeeeeeel good, na-na-na-na-na-na-na:dance3:
To anyone who is thinking of quitting but is procrastinating - just do it!

How about growing your own tobacco? That would cut out the cost, it would be much healthier, and you could still smoke. If you're going to continue smoking and LOVE smoking, it may not affect you overly negatively.
My mother smoked until she died at age 87. She was completely aware of all the negative things about smoking and just refused to let it affect her. My sister always nagged at her to quit but I used to tell her it didn't matter. Because it really doesn't matter. If the tobacco killed her that would be her free will, but I think she loved it so much that it didn't affect her. She didn't die of lung cancer and never had any problems from smoking. I have only smoked a cigarette a couple of times and it was GROSS! LOL

the brain is a funny thing. it also loves carbon monoxide..... go figure.... if you have seen the movie "Thank you for smoking", you will understand why tobacco has not been banned. although the tobacco companies pay out the wazooooo for the production of their "population control" product, they keep right on doing it. and of course, as the years have gone on, the addictive elements have become more and more radical. i find it interesting that although smoking and tobacco products have not been banned completely, the laws have drastically reduced the areas that you are allowed to use them. my guess on that is that somewhere along the line, a big tobacco man didn't give in to some govt. demand and they just started closing the vices on them. however, they are still making billions of dollars....... can't figure that out.

i have located a tobacco shop here where i live that sells a carton for 24.99. cheapest place in this state to get them. but there's a catch: you have to go in a mix and weigh your own tobacco load your own empty tubes and then wait for the little buggers to pop out so you can place them in an airtight container. my biggest problem with this is i can't seem to get my menthol mix the way that i like it. so i just keep trying. i'm also not sure what the laws in our commonwealth state about growing your own tobacco are. i should do some research and find out. thanks for the tip. and god bless your mother. she knew what the consequences could have been, but enjoyed it so much that it's negativity never touched her. i don't have any health problems at this point either. and i've been smoking for 35 years. i started when i was just a wee whipper snapper.

The following is a post I made on the 'Good Questions' thread...
Re: Good questions
About 10 years ago in a discussion with several people about smoking, the question of why so many non-smokers get lung cancer came up. During the course of the conversation, a retired physician mentioned that all the nuclear testing of the 1940's and 1950's had left a lot of radiation in the air...lung cancer appeared to be the most common malady among the general public that came as a result of such testing. In order to distract attention from the true cause, a campaign against smoking was begun...smoking caused lung cancer. When the question of so many non-smokers getting the dreaded disease kept coming up, second hand smoke became the answer. Prior to the 1960's, there were very few cases of lung cancer even though the majority of the population smoked. As the number of smokers has fallen, no one questions why the rate of lung cancer is continuing to rise...the propaganda runs deep.
We've kept in touch since then. His concern at this time is the radiation leak from Fukishima. It will take 10 to 20 years before record numbers of people get cancer...he wondered what kind of a campaign they would come up with to sidetrack any possibility of people remembering Fukishima and making the connection. Cancer takes a long time to grow, and people have short memories.
I personally don't know enough about any of this to form a considered opinion one way or another, but found his theory interesting.
I also find it interesting that smoking appears to be such a hot-button issue when our air is poisoned, our food contains pesticides, our water is not only polluted but contains fluoride (and soon to contain lithium if the government has its way), and they are discussing possibly vaccinating babies in utero to prevent obesity.
From whom did we learn about the hazards of smoking? The government...you know, the ones that are destroying the air, food and water. Their new focus is obesity...caused by high fructose corn syrup in everything and food that contains high fat and no nutrition.
I am not taking a position one way or another about smoking...it is a free will choice that I feel compelled to let people make for themselves.
I just find it curious that the issue of smoking provokes such very strong feelings in most people.

i have located a tobacco shop here where i live that sells a carton for 24.99. cheapest place in this state to get them. but there's a catch: you have to go in a mix and weigh your own tobacco load your own empty tubes and then wait for the little buggers to pop out so you can place them in an airtight container. my biggest problem with this is i can't seem to get my menthol mix the way that i like it. so i just keep trying. i'm also not sure what the laws in our commonwealth state about growing your own tobacco are. i should do some research and find out. thanks for the tip. and god bless your mother. she knew what the consequences could have been, but enjoyed it so much that it's negativity never touched her. i don't have any health problems at this point either. and i've been smoking for 35 years. i started when i was just a wee whipper snapper.

I think it's still legal in all 50 states to grow tobacco for your own personal consumption. If you wanted to sell it you'd have to comply with laws and get a license, etc., but it could be fun growing it for yourself. I looked into it a few years ago when I was going to grow some for my daughter in law, but then we moved into an apartment where I can't have a garden.
As soon as we move I will definitely grow some tobacco along with another plant that is commonly smoked. :smokin: I would love to experiment with marijuana oil from home grown marijuana after doing a lot of research on how it can cure so many diseases. Of course I would get a medical marijuana license first. (even though it should be legal without a license!!)
So the next best thing to quitting smoking would probably be to grow your own. Much good luck to all those who are determined to stop smoking tobacco! I have several friends who said it was very easy to quit using the electronic cigarette. I admire those who were able to quit overnight using will power alone.

I also need to BELIEVE that I won't pick up any weight during or after the process:eek:
Usually gaining weight is due to replacing the sig with food....

Gaining weight is due to TRANSFERANCE OF THE HABIT. It means that you have not been successful in quarantining the problem but transferring it to somewhere else, ie food, alcohol, sex, pills, pot, damiarna etc.

I didn't quit smoking...I became a non-smoker.
I picked a day, and started the mantra 'Monday morning I am a non-smoker' the week before. Monday morning when I awoke, I was a non-smoker. That was it. Never had a craving for one and never needed a substitute habit...why would I? I didn't smoke.
I had had this blockage that quitting was hard and I wasn't sure I could quit. So I just changed my mind about that part of my 'identity'. It was the only thing that worked for me.

Great thread!
I quit smoking 3 days ago. I said to myself: I decided to start smoking, I bought my first packet myself, and rolled my first cigarett. I can if I decide, stop smoking aswell. It´s not a struggle, I will not even take the fight.
So when I feel like having a cigarett I am thinking of these words, I will not even take the fight.
Good luck to us all! :)

Now I am something of an Heretic as far as Smoking goes-i enjoy smoking, I love good quality Tobacco,
i smoke different Cigarettes, a pipe and I love an occasional cigar-i have also taken up 'Vaping' using electronic
cigs with different types of Liquid E-juice, i have reduced my tobacco consumption by about 60%-E-Cigs are fantastic!
I have smoked for the past 40 years and my health is excellent, I do not have a 'smoker's cough'. We need to leave the smoking
question to individuals and stop carping on about how unhealthy and disgusting it is..it is'nt, it is just another item we humans enjoy-the anti-smoking health Nazi's make me puke.
If you don't like smoking, fine, do'nt smoke-stop making it 'Anti-social' just because the Government seek to program everyone to hate smokers- Adults choose their own
habits-this is a prime opportunity to put into practice the love of personal freedom we all value so much...let's decide to get off smokers backs!!

For all you smokers out there who want to quit this helped me give up and also inspired me.
Bryan Curtis started smoking at 13, never thinking that 20 years later it would kill him and leave a wife and children alone. In his last weeks, he set out with a message for young people.
Warning Upsetting but thats the point

•Around 5.4 million deaths a year are caused by tobacco.
* Smoking is set to kill 6.5 million people in 2015 and 8.3 million humans in 2030, with the biggest rise in low-and middle-income countries.
* Every 6.5 seconds a current or former smoker dies, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
* An estimated 1.3 billion people are smokers worldwide (WHO).
•Over 443,000 Americans (over 18 percent of all deaths) die because of smoking each year. Secondhand smoke kills about 50,000 of them.
•1.2 million people in China die because of smoking each year. That's 2,000 people a day.
•Tobacco use will kill 1 billion people in the 21st century if current smoking trends continue.
•33 percent to 50 percent of all smokers are killed by their habit.
* Smokers die on average 15 years sooner than nonsmokers
The above could be a form of depopulation never thaught of it like that.

Spent all that money I had on hypnosis and fell asleep on the cd rom. Awful awful time quitting with two nasty mouthed teens bugging the poo out of me, not doing chores. Only two birds left in the nest, and they won't lift a feather.
Gonna try and try til i get it right, but yes, I have smoked for 43 yrs and the Marlboro man and Johnny smoke are the cause of the whole nightmare.
Played sports and MVP'ed, but still my super lungs have kept chugging along.

I strongly recommend sitting down and writing a list of the top 10 reasons you do not want to quit smoking. Yes, you read that correctly. The reasons YOU DO NOT WANT TO QUIT. If you wanted to quit, you would have by now.
Also sit down and list the top 10 reasons you are AFRAID to quit.
It's amazing how taking a few minutes to just be honest with yourself can take all the strength out of an addiction.
Don't lie to yourself. You're smarter than that.
What you resist, persists. Accept the smoking. Love the smoking for all it has done for you and where it has gotten you today.
Accept all of it, and then let it go.
When I quit smoking, I used EFT. You can learn EFT completely for free at http://www.eftuniverse.com/. I did lots of tapping on "Even though I don't want to quit smoking, I deeply and completely accept myself and love myself and forgive myself for all the ways I created this addiction." Then, just every now and then, tap on one of the reasons on your list that you do not want to quit or why you are afraid to.
If you tap every time you have a craving, and do it completely (I don't recommend short cuts until you've really done a lot of tapping), you will have no problem whatsoever quitting smoking.
In the meantime be honest with yourself and everyone around you. If you wanted to quit, you would have already. Now you just have to make the decision whether you are going to do it or not. It does take action and not just talking about it.
Hope this helps someOne out there.
With love.

Here's to anyone trying to give up smoking. Best of luck to you, my friend.
The thing about smoking is that the chemicals absolutely convince you that it's an enjoyable activity...and it is!
There's nothing like a 'cup a tea and a fag', or a ciggy break. You know it's not good for you, but the senses override the intellect every time. We are all pleasure seeking by nature, so what's the problem?
For those that want to quit, the problem, is that they don't like to be dictated to by their senses...always subconsciously planning their day around their habit...sneaking around the people who think, 'omg, I can't believe your a smoker!'
If you want to quit, it's simply down to the strength of your mind. Everything that we do is based on desire. If you've got a strong mind you'll do it. For someone with a really strong mind..they can turn it off like a tap...cold turkey. They control their
mind like it's got an on/off switch. It's a wonderful thing...awe inspiring.
Now, most of us aren't like that...we give in easily to wherever the mind and senses
drag us. I am totally like that..a real sense enjoyer! I was only able to quit because
my partner has an iron will (see above), and resolved to stop, and decided he was going to drag (pardon the pun), me with him. My mind was kicking all the
way. Honestly, I don't think I would ever have done it on my own.
So, and this is my point. Look at yourself and judge what kind of mind you have...under control, or uncooperative? If it's the latter, then like our friend Witchy
said, 'buddy up'! Get together with someone who's got a strong mind, who also
wants to quit, and you will definitely succeed in the end. If you have the right association, they will help you, simply by sharing their strength energy!
Even if you don't succeed at this, it's not the end of the world, plenty of people have lived long lives, in spite of smoking....but we all know it affects your breathing as you get older.
Remember, everything in life is based on your desire, and the achievement of those desires is dependent on the strength of your will, which is down to your mind. In the Bhagavad Gita it says, 'for one who has controlled the mind, the mind is the best of friends, but for one with an uncontrolled mind, it is the worst of enemies'.
Another nice quote from the Moody Blues...
'Whatever you want to be....you will be in the end.'
Well done, New Dawn. Thanks also for this helpful thread.
To anyone else trying to quit smoking, or achieve anything else for that matter...
Good luck and love to you!

I just decided to stop. When I stopped, I felt a desperate need to smoke only once. Had I been able to get hold of any cigarettes at the time, I would have smoked one. After a while, the feeling passed. This lasted for about 2 years, and then I got really stressed out at work and went outside and smoked one.
Now, I smoke one now and again.

Another side effect I didn't know about:
My aunt has been smoking since she was 14. Now she has nicotine in her brain, and it is killing brain cells; she has dementia as a result, and she also has me rationing her cigarettes as a result.
I did this instead of cold turkey because at the hospital I was told that she was beyond understanding the need to give up cigarettes, and it was very painful for her to not have any. If I had it to do over again, I'd go with cold turkey, because now what she does day in and out (and middle of the night too) is cry out for ciggies.
I bought her an e-cig, but she won't use it.
Good luck and well done to all of you who have or who are licking the vice!
