"Gary McKinnon’s hopes of avoiding extradition to the U.S. suffered a severe setback yesterday when Barack Obama declined to allow him to be tried in Britain.

Campaigners had hoped the President would halt the legal proceedings because of the Asperger’s sufferer’s precarious mental state.

But Mr Obama – despite previously saying he wanted to find an ‘appropriate solution’ to end the computer hacker’s ordeal – effectively endorsed the extradition process."

Gary McKinnon, 43, with his mother Janis Sharp, 60. McKinnon, who has Asperger's syndrome, hacked into Pentagon computers

"He said: ‘We have confidence in the British legal system coming to a just conclusion, and so we will await resolution and we will be respectful of that process.’

Over the past decade, the British courts have repeatedly refused to block 45-year-old Mr McKinnon’s extradition, despite doctors saying he will kill himself if bundled on to a plane to the U.S.

Judges have themselves agreed he is a suicide risk but – under the controversial Extradition Act, which is biased in favour of the U.S. – this is considered insufficient reason to halt proceedings.

David Cameron raised his plight in face-to-face talks with Mr Obama yesterday morning. The two leaders were then questioned during a joint press conference at which the extradition was one of only a handful of subjects raised, alongside Libya and the Middle East.

Campaigners say this shows the huge importance of the case, which has been the subject of the Daily Mail’s Affront to British Justice campaign.

Shami Chakrabarti, director of Liberty, said: ‘If, as the President says, he will be “respectful” of our legal process, then he should be happy for Gary to be dealt with here in the UK.

‘If our Government seeks to honour the words of both Coalition partners in opposition, it will decide that Gary’s condition warrants halting this farcical extradition immediately, so that justice and compassion can be dispensed at home.’

Mr McKinnon’s case began almost a decade ago when he hacked into Nasa and other military computers from the bedroom of his North London flat, searching for evidence of ‘little green men’.

There are two ways of ending his ordeal. The first is for the U.S. to agree to allow him to be put on trial in the UK, where the crimes took place. The alternative is for the British courts or Home Secretary to rule that he cannot be extradited.

Under the 2003 Extradition Act, it is very hard for Britain to stop the proceedings. This placed the focus on the U.S. helping to find a way out of the legal mess during Mr Obama’s visit.

At a White House press conference last year, the President had raised the hopes of Mr McKinnon’s supporters by promising an ‘appropriate solution’. He said that, in dealing with the case, the U.S. would recognise Britain was an ‘ally that is unparalleled in terms of our co-operative relationship’.

Yesterday, however, this language was replaced with the simple statement that America would respect the rule of British law. President Obama said: ‘We have proceeded through all the processes required under our extradition agreements. It’s now in the hands of the British legal system.’

Mr Cameron said: ‘The case is in front of the Home Secretary (Theresa May), who has to consider reports about Gary’s health and his well-being and it is right that she does that in a proper and effectively quasi-judicial way.

‘I totally understand the anguish of his mother and family about this issue. We must follow the proper processes and make sure this case is dealt with in the proper way and I am sure that is the case.’

Mr McKinnon’s mother Janis Sharp tried to find some positives from Mr Obama’s words. She said: ‘I am happy because President Obama has confirmed that it is a UK decision and the United States will accept it and not contest it.

‘But we are tired and worn into the ground and really expected our family’s torment to be over this month. We so need an end to it.’

So far, the Americans have repeatedly refused to allow Mr McKinnon to be tried in the UK. Cables released by WikiLeaks revealed that the U.S. ambassador had rejected a personal plea from then prime minister Gordon Brown for him to be imprisoned in Britain.

The U.S. has taken an equally robust position with the Coalition.

This month U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said the administration would ‘take all of the necessary steps’ to have Mr McKinnon extradited and ‘held accountable for the crimes that he committed’.

Mr McKinnon’s solicitor Karen Todner said: ‘I hope the British justice system does now support Gary and stop this misery that he and his family are going through.’

In a respect, I am saddened to have seen so much of the public's attention aimed toward the freeing of Gary McKinnon, although I fully understand the reason for this support.

The US and UK governments are using this situation to further *iss off the people and are using this young man to further their agendas. Governments don't like their secrets brought out into the light.

I wrote a letter to the British Home Secretary stating that, as an expatriate British citizen i was appalled at the way this case
was being handled-that as an IT engineer i find it dubious (to say the very least) that Gary did any 'Damage' to the Pentagon/NASA computer
network-what, from a Dial-up connection in 2001? This is the main thrust of their argument, that he wreaked havoc..it is absolute lies.
I recieved a sarcastic letter back saying how interested they were to receive opinions from the public(!) An obvious frame-job to cover their
anxiety that Gary discovered something he really should not have......

Hmmmm I'm just wondering if Gary knows more than he's letting on, or the Pentagon think he knows more...!!?

Its pretty obvious Obama is covering his arse as well as the Pentagons ... otherwise why would they be so dogged!

Hi All Ummmmmm...Yes Gary said in one of his interviews that he saw ship to ship crew transfer manifests of Extraterrestrial & Human personell on U S craft that didn't correspond to say 'Janes military guide '. of the U S Navel fleet.

He said in the interview his equipment was to primitive to download it , which I don't doubt he doesn't lie easily with 'Aspergers' .

The Pentagon must think he either knows more than he is saying or they're martyring him to deter other 'Hackers' .

One thing that puzzles me & probably everyone else . Why did'nt he just write them down ? I' m no 'geek' but its blatently obviouse to me .

There is deffinately something else going on here..... Cheers Steve

Gary McKinnon is just a scapegoat. It's a bit weak to say he HACKED the Pentagon's computers. The Pentagon's I.T. idiots left the door wide open and Gary walked in. If Gary could find the open door, no doubt foreign governments could find the same open door and access the same information. Gary may have seen some secret information EDIT or was it deliberately planted disinformation? END EDIT. He hasn't published details of what he saw. He did not steal or damage anything. The U.S. Military were humiliated and they want to kick butt. If they were really smart, they would offer Gary a job, not try to throw him in prison. No doubt, the idiots responsible for the security lapse have been reassigned. OK, granted, Gary was a bit naughty to snoop around in the Pentagon's computers. Maybe he deserves a stern talking to or a slap on the wrist.

This case is vaguely similar to the U.S. gubment wanting Julian Assange's blood because WikiLeaks published a few hundred thousand documents that embarrassed the U.S. military and diplomatic corps. Julian didn't steal the information, it was GIVEN to WikiLeaks.

Both Gary and Julian actually did the U.S. government a big favour by exposing some very serious holes in computer security that no doubt would have been plugged by now.

The U.S. government has proved they can't be trusted, they are utterly stupid sometimes and they are bullies who want to blame others instead of doing the right thing (so they would have much less to hide) and taking responsibility for their own mistakes.

Although I live in Australia, I think a quote from Bob Dylan is appropriate here...

"Couldn't help but make me feel ashamed to live in a land where justice is a game"

Just in case anyone misunderstands my sentiments towards the United States, I want to state for the record that I love USA as a spectacularly beautiful country. I admire the basic principles of their constitution and I admire many of their great achievements. I love most of the people I met there. Several of my closest friends are American. I abhor the arrogance of the U.S. government and their military aggression, their greed and corruption, their lies and secrecy, the culture of guns and violence within the U.S. and several other things I won't list here. I sincerely believe that most Americans are good people with good intentions.

Back to Gary McKinnon. He is harmless. Leave him alone.

Anyone with any humanity should be asking what we the people can do to support Gary, who in my opinion is a victim of a system that itself is utterly corrupt, people power (manipulated or not) bought down the wall imagine what could be achieved if we stopped listening to the lies we are constantly fed by the system that has only it's own interests at heart and got behind Mr McKinnon, let the people rise up and take back their power to change destiny

If you ask what we can do, the answer can always be to donate money, for legal fees for instance.
What if the people funded a good yet shark-type lawyer, sympathetic to disclosure, say, to support Gary in the US and really bust the case against pentagoners and nasa's wide open.
If a mentally handicapped person is able to get information from super secret sites, that would be cause for major governmental embarassment.
Seems like an opportunity.

Perhaps those types of court cases can even be fought in the US without McKinnon actually having to be there.

Who knows?

Obummer has a lot more pressing matters than swatting flies like Gary with a sledge hammer, why are the Pentagons computers vulnerable to guys like Gary is the bigger question. This makes Obummer look like a weakling trying to be a bully with some one he can handle.

As as been said before, they left the door open and let him in. I am guessing if that was the case, they would have seen him coming a long way off, check him out, and realised he is the perfect patsy to indroduce this bill or that legislation.

its why he could get in... unless other govt's have breached too, though their hackers are way too good to get caught.

I don't know, but I feel sorry for the guy.

If you believe what is happening to Gary Mackinnon and you are outraged by how he is being treated consider this. Thinking of ways we could channel our feelings consider this. We are co-creators of our own reality right? Perhaps the focusing of intent is a way to help. Maybe the mass on-going focusing of intent in support of Gary would help. Non Violent, yet unwaivering intent coming from a place of love can move mountains. We should all collectively focus our intent to bring into the light the state sponsered, state sacntioned abuse of an individuals right to freedom. Envision then become the change you want to see

Yes Elixer...... In principle its a good idea but the legal world is more of a closed shop and boged down in 'Red Tape' than our so called ' Democracys '

We need some one like Fred259 on the chemtrail threads, He'd certainly defend Gary like a tenacious ' Scottish Terrier' LOL.....................Cheers Steve

I really hope he gets to stay. All the lies about how he caused thousands of dollars worth of damage just show what these people will do to get their way. Didn't they even change a law to make it easier to get him?

He's one of the most important people around at the moment because of what he saw, and it is my hope that if he does get taken away, he at least passes on all the info he saw to a couple of people he trusts, and at least that way, what ever he saw that he kept to himself, won't go wasted.

I think he's a great dude who done something silly out of pure curiosity, and seeing as he has an illness, they should leave him in the UK to face the consequences.

Good luck Gary, you've got a lot of support out there!

You know something Astrid, what saddens me most is the 'Mental Tortue' this poor man has been put through by both the UK and US Governments!

If I was Gary's PR Manager - I'd say 'F-Em ALL' Gary, I've booked you in and arranged pre-recorded interviews with Coast to Coast AM, The Jeff Rense Show, The Alex Jones Show, The Kevin Smith Show, Truth News, Bill Ryan & Kerry Cassidy, Blog Talk Radio, the whole gambit!

Tell them everything you know and Then Some..!

Because it looks like to me, they know Gary knows more than he's letting on, and they don't give a damn about his mental health (one iota)!

Just like all of those Whistleblowers who mysteriously, slipped over in the shower, fell off a balcony, shot themselves in the head and managed to to walk several miles before they laid to rest, you all know the drill...

If he hasn't already? At least then Gary could possibly share the entire Truth with the world?

If he has spilled all that he knows, I would advise him even to make some stuff up that makes them look even more foolish!

...and who knows they may even give up their pathetic quest to try him in a stacked 'Kangaroo Court' and lock him up and throw away the key, for their own stupidity!

yeppers Jackness,

I'm thinking that what he knows could be a REAL be a game changer , why they are SO fixed on keeping him inside.
I mean it seems obvious.

Timing being so important, and what we are heading into, they are going to work harder to keep all from foiling things.
But i agree with an interview, even one to be released if anything happened to him.

Who knows, he may have even done this????

I wonder, if he did tell Kerry more than what was published.......

Different parts of the US government are in a silent war with one another, in the same way, in the past, that the feds were at war with the power and control of J. Edgar Hoover at the FBI.

Someone wants the information gleaned from NASA that is in Gary's head.
