FYI:

In societies that profess some respect for law, suspects are apprehended and brought to fair trial.

After the assassination of bin Laden I received such a deluge of requests for comment that I was unable to respond individually, and on May 4 and later I sent an unedited form response instead, not intending for it to be posted, and expecting to write it up more fully and carefully later on. But it was posted, then circulated.

That was followed but a deluge of reactions from all over the world. It is far from a scientific sample of course, but nevertheless, the tendencies may be of some interest. Overwhelmingly, those from the “third world” were on the order of “thanks for saying what we think.” There were similar ones from the US, but many others were infuriated, often virtually hysterical, with almost no relation to the actual content of the posted form letter. That was true in particular of the posted or published responses brought to my attention. I have received a few requests to comment on several of these. Frankly, it seems to me superfluous. If there is any interest, I’ll nevertheless find some time to do so.

The original letter ends with the comment that “There is much more to say, but even the most obvious and elementary facts should provide us with a good deal to think about.” Here I will fill in some of the gaps, leaving the original otherwise unchanged in all essentials.

kt, this is a very interesting article. noam chomsky is a very literate man. very well spoken and versed in the world of law and politics. i agree with his stance. but i'm left with this: does anybody feel better that obl was killed? the theories that exists regarding his natural death many years ago, still resonate high with many, many people. the thought that they wouldn't bring the man to justice to be seen in front of the world leaves many questions unanswered. in my opinion, it lends credence to the fact that he was already dead and they are using this as a means to upload the re-selection process for obama. his polls had never been lower until this occurred. the sleepers see this as a victory for obama. i wonder what the families of the victims of 911 are saying? this is a very interesting article indeed. and i'm guessing it will bring forth many opinions.

Margaret Thatcher was on her way out and then came the Falklands War, which put her right back in favour. I could never understand the relationship between atrocity and the power of politics. It seems absurd to me. It seems that TPTB merely have to do a dirty deed to heighten their popularity. What does that say about us?

well it's too bad that people like us aren't in the political agenda. we'd be handing out candy and flowers to get our ratings boosted. lol. i guess you can't do much with that, huh? there's no atrocity in it and certainly no money to be made.
have a good one, corson

It is pure tribalism.
