Privatized Prisons and Prison Labor IS Slavery

Prisons are the reinvention of slave labor. Importing anything into the USA that is made by slave labor or prisoners is illegal. However USA prisoners can be used legally to manufacture USA products. Since prisoners are made to work for just pennies a day, this allows USA corporations to cheaply produce products that are competitive with Mexican labor. That's why 1% of American adults are in jail ~ between 2 and 3 million of them. That's more than 1 in every 100 and many of them are in prison for trivial offenses! Any excuse will do to keep the cages full.

Commercialized prison labour has become big business. Writing in the Madison, Wisconsin Isthmus, investigative reporter Steven Elbow says convict-made goods will reach nearly $9 billion in sales by the year 2000.

That adds up to between 2 and 3 million.
That's more than 1 in every 100.

The USA has more of its citizens in prison than any other nation on earth. It has 148 prisoners per 100,000 population. That's more than 2 times as many as South Africa, 3 times as many as Iran and 6 times as many as China.

Sorry couldn't remember the rest of your long numbered handle. This is not the way it is in Canada as of yet but I hear rumors that they are trying to make it so. The costs to house a male prisoner is quite high and almost double for a female prisoner in the Federal system. Women actually live in houses versus cells/ranges unless they are on the Maximum security Unit. I have numbers running in my head but not absolutes otherwise I would post them. Most inmates do not work in our prisons either other than a few janitorial crews. They do not have apprenticeship programs anymore to speak of and have taken away many of the programs that would have given an individual a chance to learn a trade while incarcerated. The jobs they do are only to lessen the costs of the systems overhead and that's about it.

Things may have changed as I have been out of that arena for 10 years now, but I haven't heard of any significant changes other than the possibility of privatizing prisons because it is a huge cost to the system. If this happens the offenders will be in for a big surprise as many of them now are pretty indoctrinated into not working on a daily basis.

What would you say if I told you that they sell bonds off of each prisoner?
I would say that it costs the state/feds zero for the prisoners once you deduct the cost from the profit.

In the UK you don't have to be a prisoner to have bonds sold on you. Every National Insurance Number represents a £ figure which forms the borrowing capacity of the country from groups like the IMF countries don't have gold reserves these days they have only one true income producing asset and that it there population.....

No wonder they always sprout in the news how much debt the country has on a per capita basis.... now you know why..

Every National Insurance Number represents a £ figure which forms the borrowing capacity of the country from groups like the IMF countries don't have gold reserves these days they have only one true income producing asset and that it there population.....

What would you say if you knew every prisoner had a life insurance policy which benefits the prison if you should have an unfortunate accident. WORTH MORE DEAD THAN ALIVE.

..I believe that 1 in 12 in American prisons are black..which says a lot about the socio-economic divide. Also, Prisons are used to manufacture millitary equipment cheaply....
