Does anyone have any tricks on how to reconnect
with your higher self and how to recognize it when
in contact with it?

Meditation isn't a trick, but it does allow you to come into direct contact with all levels of your self, including your higher self :)

Tricks was probably the wrong word to use but all i'm
trying to do is to learn how to reconnect to my higher
self.

I was reading up on how to do this but the answers i
got didn't sound right, so i came here to ask how it can
be done.

One way i read about is to ask a question out loud and
listen for an answer but you have to determine if it's
your self ego responding or is it your higher self.

Another way that was suggested was to write down
your question in notepad and listen for an answer
and type in the answer under the question.

Here again, you have to determine who is doing
the answering.

I haven't tried meditation yet because i'm just now
getting into this but maybe i should try it and see
what happens.

I still welcome any idea's on how to do this though.

Humanalien, if only it was that simple :) lol

I hate to say it but I am doubtful about your chances of (re)connecting to your higher self by saying questions out loud in a conscious state or by typing questions on your computer screen... meditation will likely be the key for you here, of that I'm pretty certain!

I would suggest visiting the following threads, they might be a good place for you to start:

I do that, but I dont ask outloud, asking inside is just as good.

The answer from the higherself is instant, it beats the one from the ego every time - thats how I can tell.

Problem is ego doesnt always like the answer, so I sometimes have to rinse and repeat :)

Meditation improves the clarity with which this process can proceed as, in time, it teaches you to be aware of the indescribable processes of the mind and all the sneaky tricks it can play.

Dear Humanalien,

That is the most precious question in the whole universe.
Simply be aware who is asking the question.

Do not answer the question, that is too complicated.

These are all great methods - but the "trick" (for lack of a better word) is the listening part - and not just listening, but listening actively and being aware of the answer we are receiving. Which, again, is where meditation comes in handy.

It helps you to clear your mind and organize your thoughts in such a way that you can identify which are just ordinary 'chatter' and which come from a higher plane. :)

Shut your eyes, breathe, quieten your mind and ask questions from your heart (not head) - wait for that quiet knowing answer that just pops in. Just know that you can do it.

As tony said, Who is asking the question? This is majorly important in my view of things. The first step as it were.
My only tip I have to offer, we are all a "note". A harmonic structure. And that you know this note already, start there then see what comes out of it.

I know meditation is a big part of it but i've always
had trouble doing that. I can't quite my mind long
enough to even begin meditating.

I guess i just need to continue trying until i make
a break-through.

Thanks for the advise people. Much appreciated.

I am no expert/guru but this works for me, forgive first, get rid of bad karma, close your eyes, no sound distractions, focus and breathe. imagine yourself floating through space, your looking for color, tones. almost angelic harp sounds, and possible shapes , a fire enfolding on itself but not consuming. a feeling of total peace/love and it will talk to you in your own voice. you meet the divine spirit and you'll never be the same. strangers would say there's something different about you. I don't know why I'm typing this, hadn't thought of this moment since June of 1989. I just wanted to share what happened to me, hope this helps in some small way. peace. your never more focused than when everything is taken from you and there's no choice but to be quiet, listen and learn.

Hello Human alien,
Do not try to quieten your mind, just let it be.
When one starts meditating the thoughts seem to get worse, they are not!
You are just noticing them!!!! This is excellent.

Just return to watching the breath. At the end of each inhalation and exhalation
there is a short gap, where nothing takes place, just note it.
Do not try too hard, barely notice the awareness.
Note everything but do not cling, let go...let....go....
Break the meditation now and again, so you do not fixate on it.

Choose two periods a day to practice. 5 or 10 or 20 minutes. It's your time.
Read something inspiring.
Check out some of the spiritual posts here, they may remind you why to meditate.

The most important thing to remember is that the thoughts are not you.
You are that which aware of the thought..........SO, you are already there!!!!!!!

Good luck,

Tony

One trick i used to use is that of an analog FM radio tuner. You know, the kind where you have a dial you spin to change the station.

Imagine the inner voice as a radio station. Then, mentally, spin the dial..... it stops. (just don't hit another station!) As you do this, you will become aware of the inner voice pushing hard against this enforced silence and you will begin to feel and note the deep level pre-formation of the conscious words, pushing against those moments of silence. Ultimately, it is THIS what component of 'mind' you are after, with regard to the 'stilling' of the mind.

As Tony says, one way to start is to associate the voice, the inner voice ....as the sound the breath makes as one inhales and exhales. Each time, instead of having an inner voice, have the sound of your breath fill your mind--as the 'inner voice'.

As you do this, with big breaths, and long slow exhalations..increase the time between breaths..and those silences between, those will be attached to your inner voice, so it will have moments of silence.

Connection to Nature is a path. If you like it.

Through the marvels of Creation, your spirit will initiate an inner dialogue, made of thoughts, feelings, symbols, all deeply rooted into your spirit.

The irony is that both the Higher Self and the body are trying to communicate with everyone constantly, all the time, but it's very rare that someone really listens.

There is one way to hear what the Higher Self is trying to tell you that was strongly favoured by Freud. Jung, Adler, and most of the founders of Western psychology. They all regarded this as the most important topic in all of psychology, but unfortunately their followers weren't willing to do this. I'm referring to writing down whatever snippets of your dreams you remember. To do so, it's necessary to keep a pen and notepad by your bed, and to start writing as soon as you begin to wake up, even if it's in the middle of the night. Unfortunately, the parts of you that aren't in touch with your Higher Self will misinfo and distort the memory of the dream very soon after you start to wake up. Then there's the task of interpreting what the dream is saying. Your dreams are always the big current issues in your life that you are avoiding. They're hard to interpret only because they depict what you want to avoid facing to be the facts. Also, there are a few, but only a few, universal symbols. Any kind of car or train etc represents your life and your lifecourse. Steps or stairs always represent spiritual/psychological change for the better (if they're going up). If they're impossibly steep, though, like a cliff face, that usually means you're attempting a challenge that's too hard for you right now.

That is where the very basics of breathing meditation come in helpful - it gives you a basis to start from. I'm going to include a method here that I've taught to a number of people, including my daughters. It's very basic, but if you follow through on it, it can be of great help :)

BREATHING MEDITATION:
(you will need a kitchen timer or a clock with a timer)

Find a quiet place where you can sit comfortably (not a bed). By quiet I mean no kids or friends - a place where you won't be disturbed. Turn off your telephone, radio, television, or any other electronic devices.
Seat yourself comfortably; back straight (you can prop yourself against a wall if you'd like, or a straight-backed chair can work too). Note: If you're sitting against a wall, be sure that you are sitting on a cousin or low stool as otherwise your legs will get tingly and distract you.
Set the kitchen timer or alarm clock for 10 minutes.
Close your eyes.
Take several very slow, deep breaths.
Concentrate on the indentation just above your upper lip but just below your nose. If it helps you to touch the spot, go ahead and do so.
Concentrating on that spot breath in for four slow counts (keep your eyes closed!)
Let your breath out through your mouth for four slow counts while still concentrating on that spot.
Continue breathing in and breathing out as directed above until the timer goes off.

Your mind is going to try to distract you. It is going to present all sorts of things for you to think about: did you feed the cat? Did you lock the front door? Is that the telephone ringing? (I told you to turn it off!) Is my left foot itching? If I open my eyes right now, will there be a spider dangling in front of me?

DON'T LISTEN TO IT. Every time it presents you with a thought to think about - let the thought go, and bring your focus back to your breathing and that spot above your lip.

I know that this sounds silly, I mean, you're not concentrating on anything, after all, but it is very important to be able to clear your mind. For many beginners this can take weeks, months even of daily practice - the mind is very persistent. But eventually you will find yourself being able to slip in to the emptiness of mind that is needed to accomplish some of the more in-depth meditation practices (grounding, healing, energy raising etc).

My recommendation is to practice this 10 minutes twice a day, but if you can only get in one session, that will still help.
Be warned however, this is not an “immediate results” kind of practice. IT TAKES TIME. The accepted time-frame for achieving results in changes of habits is six weeks. So be prepared to sit quietly for at least ten minutes a day for six straight weeks before you been to see any real results.
The upside is that once you’ve established your ability to quiet your mind, the rewards are tremendous!

Hello Humanalien, Thank you for your post :) i think this is definitely one of the most important things we should all be asking ourselves and striving for all the time.
For me, i found that guided meditation , particularly visualising a place that is healing for you (for me i visualise being by the ocean or in a forest and it works for me all the time) and then visualising my higher self (the most purest form of your spiritual being) coming to meet me there. I always know when it has really helped me (and worked) when i meet my higher self i feel very strong and overwhelming emotion as if i am meeting an old dear friend i have not seen for a really really long time. I also recommend chakra cleansing and clearing- this is something i have only practised for the past few months and it has CHANGED MY LIFE. I found working on certain chakras has really helped so much in connecting with my higher self. I recommend an Amethyst crystal which aids with connecting to the higher self and spirit guides. Its absolutely amazing! not only does it cleanse but also protects your aura from lower energies, and also the thoughts of 'ego' which can distract you from connecting to your higher self, guides and when you are trying to raise your vibrational frequency through meditation. Hope this helps :)

It may be tricky to describe higher self which also can be called intuition, but it's not hard to feel it. Just focus on the middle of your heart. Like a subtle blinking light, when you take notice and follow its signals, you feel satisfied, quiet, calm, certain, relieved, confident, and, most of all, in alignment with your authentic self. Ignore this heart-based beeper and you'll feel restless, anxious, uneasy, disturbed, and not quite yourself. To feel your heart vibration, breathe deeply, quiet your thoughts for a moment, put your hand on your heart, and listen for its pulse. It's so subtle that you may doubt that what you're feeling is real. Don't. It is.

Allow yourself one full day to be guided by your intuition. During the day, whenever you're faced with a question, decision, or choice, put your hand on your heart and say out loud, "My intuition says . . . ," and then answer out loud.

Next, follow the response your intuition gave you. For example, you may wonder how to get to work the fastest way. Place your hand on your heart, and ask your intuition to guide you. It may say, Take the train today, even though you usually drive. For that day, go ahead and take public transportation. You may discover by doing this that you miss a major traffic jam and sail straight through to work. Whether you have that assurance or not (you probably won't), follow your vibes anyway. Be a good sport in following your intuition fully all day. Be open to what surprising new things may occur.

If we are travelers, and our body is our vehicle, our intuition is the radio signal along the way or the radar on the instrument panel that keeps us on track. We cannot travel at the speed of love without it, because we'll get lost. If we are on track, it hums along smoothly and we feel at ease, in the flow, right with ourselves and the Universe, and at peace as we go.

If we drift off course and out of alignment with our authentic selves, however, the radar starts to beep, causing tension in our heart, our chest, the back of our neck, our stomach, and throughout our nervous system, leaving us feeling unsettled—as though we have "ants in the pants," so to speak. This feeling is our indication that we have drifted from our true intention and must reexamine the direction in which we're flowing to get back on track.

Why is it if we talk to God it's called praying, but when God talks to us it's called paranoid schizophrenia?

For myself I try to recognize if the message is coming from ego or higher self. If it's based on fear or wanting it's coming from ego. If it's about harmony and growth it's from my higher self.

Hope this make sense.
