Master of Puppets is about hard drugs.
The thing about "Art" (for lack of better word) is that as soon as "Art" enters the public domain the artist intention must contend with the audiences interpretation. Metallica might have released "Master of Puppets" as a song about hard drugs, but I hear a song about TPTW. Who is write? Is it even wrong to compare hard drugs with the creature comforts of modern life? I have know many addicts over the short years I have been on earth, hell I have been one of them and sadly still have my vises, but the number pales in comparison to the number of people that simply MUST: have name brand everything, watch their favorite T.V. shows, support their favorite sports team, frequent their favorite alternative media forum or believe in their chosen religious text. The reasoning behind posting "master of Puppets" in this thread was to draw a connection between the addiction to "hard drugs" and the addiction to the comfortable life we have become accustomed to. Just as "hard drugs" are fun at the time they often have unforeseen and lasting consequence that not only affect the person partaking but also those around them. Is this so different than the western consumption lifestyle? Drive BIG vehicles, eat BIG steaks, and blow up BIG bombs, sure its fun now but what will it do to the west in the future and what is it doing to the non-western peoples that have to live on the same planet? On a lighter note, two verses of "Master of Puppets" with my own personal take on the meaning of the lyrics.
