As used here, assets include cash, accounts receivable, inventory, real estate, mineral resources, intellectual property (e.g. patents), securities and so forth. One trillion is one million million (1e12) - or you are a millionaire one million times over.

If we consider that on average each company has 5 C-level executive positions, and that each company's Board of Directors includes 5 unique individuals (those who serve on only one board and are not also a C-level executive), then we have 20,000 individuals who control the US$138 trillion.
