Interesting Tango. I knew they had som big bullies around their borders, Italy France and Germany, but this was very very interesting. I do however believe this decision to have protection has come through the fact that it's people have direct democracy within its borders and that they wish to keep it so.

Hi Tango,

Switzerland doesn't have the lowest crime rate in the world, Yemen does, according to Nationmaster.com: http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_tot_cri_percap-crime-total-crimes-per-capita

Having lived in Switzerland for almost two years (Geneva and Basel) I personally have seen crimes being committed in that country. Total crime is lesser in Switzerland simply because of numbers. Switzerland is a tiny country, easier to control than a large country like Brazil for example. Also the type of crime will be different, more white colar and drugs related crimes in Switzerland (you need to step over the junkies around the train stations in Bern and Zurich). However, as every Swiss male WHO HAS DONE MILITARY TRAINING has a rifle at home (only to be used to protect the homeland), I'm sure that burglaries are down.

Best regards,

Steve

good point steve

another reason for its relatively low crime rate is that the country has the strictest immigration laws EVER and anywhere in the world..draconian in fact....they do not admit anyone new unless it is of a desired professional and age profile..if you don't have poverty problem, the same would go for any country in the world...also, they never joined any orgaisations if it meant they might lose money on it....example: they are not members of EU and retain their right to pick and choose who they want.. it was the LAST european country to give women the right to vote (in 1971)...tells you something about the prevalent mentality...

suppose you wanna be a resident while on work contract (not necesserily a swiss citizen) and suppose you have money in the bank and want to buy a house outrigjht - you may think it's straightforward ..but no... you could fulfill all the formal criteria, yet if the residents of the street corner say they don't want you there for whatever reason, that's that...fine example of direct democracy...good for some, not so good for the others.....bw l

It all depends how you look at it ...

Switzerland is probably THE center of money laundering, the core committee of Bilderberg is in Switzerland, etc. etc.
If you look at the numbers in a different way, effect their crimes have per capita of the global population ... the biggest crooks will most probably be in Switzerland.

Well, interesting views on Switzerland. Especially the Draconian argument - I've never thought about this, thank you for the input Lightblue!
Let's state this: this country has a lot to do with money laundering etc. But, don't forget Luxemburg, Liechtenstein, Cayman Islands, Cyprus. The Vatican is probably a story for itself. We still have plenty of so called off-shore places around the world. It's not only the small country in the middle of Europe to accuse. It's the people's greed. From economical and ethical view, we do have a deregulation problem within the capital- resp. money market. Hopefully, one day this issue changes!
Back to the main critics: Switzerland stands for sure not only for Chocolate, Mountains and Heidi. Obviously, it has sort of a special role within this earthly game. Any opinions about?
As far as I know, the core committee of Bilderberg is in the Netherlands....I'm not for 100% sure about it - does anybody know?

Guess they're not so great after all. Waiting until 1971 to allow women to vote?

Sheesh.

Direct democracy aka "majority rule" does not always work out for the best.

Bilderberg is the name of the hotel (in the Netherlands) where it all started. One of the founders was prince Bernhard, also from the Netherlands.
Current queen Beatrix is a regular participant and occasionally chairs the meeting I believe ... So Netherlands is indeed heavily involved.
By the way the EU seems to have grown out of the Benelux ... which was a small union of Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg. Also started by the Netherlands.
There was a documentary recently on dutch mainstream television about prince Bernhard. There was a scene where queen Wilhelmina (grandmother of Beatrix)
discussed with prince Bernhard that she didn't like he power in the hands of 'politicians'. Her vision was to limit it and let the royals rule .... :frog:

But if I am correct I heard Daniel Estulin say (amongst others) that the core organization of the Bilderberg group is located in Switzerland. He's one of the current experts on Bilderberg ... (so I assume it's accurate)

Direct democracy aka "majority rule" does not always work out for the best.

Strictly spoken democracy (if it is applied as intended): 51% can dominate the other 49% ... So that is still almost half that can be dominated ...
