I am an MMO (Massive Multi-Player Online) games for almost 10 years. Lately i have been getting more and more depressed. It has become so obvious that these games are used for educating kids how to think and act that its just sickening.
The following is a reply to my post on the game TERA Forums EU. The topic is to play solo (alone) in MMOs. This guy was really angry and had a huge wall of text explaining that playing with other people is a mistake etc. After a couple of his posts i replied to him that he needs to play single player games if he loves it so much. This is his reply :
First of all: Dragon Age-2 is fakin TERRIBLE, it's probaly the by far worst sequel to any game out there. The only good thing this game had is a cameo of Flemeth. Damn I couldn't even finish this crap!
Second, I'm by far not some schoolboy without money. I can buy anything I want. And at the very least, I can buy a game and as much subscription as I want. Hell, I bought whole Aion just to take a look at it. Quit it in a less than a week...
Next, Epic Rage pretty much answered correctly, there are PVE servers so I'm not affraid getting ganked. Believe it or not, I'm a damn good player with over 4 years of experience in mmo's, but still I'll just roll on a pve server and do pvp only WHEN I want. Under MY rules.
Next. I like playing mmo's because it's big interesting world, with alot of things to do. I don't like people, but I like playing better than them, getting better gear than them. I like the game with purpose. I like people to envy me, to KNOW that I'm good. I don't need their friendship, I need thier respect. Or their jealousy. Or even thier hate. Because they won't hate me because I'm bad. They'll hate me because I'm good. Better than them.
I like games with big open worlds. Unfortunately, there's very few of them out there, like Elder Scrolls which comes out once in 5-6 years. Mmos give me this world, alive and breathing, filled with players. It gives me enough of content to explore and alot of reasons to go on after it has been explored. Single player RPG get boring after you finish them once, maximum twice. Mmo's keep you interested much longer.
I don't even really understand what you get from grouping up... You wanna chat? Use damn zone chat or something! You MUST be in a group to kill some poor elite squirrel? What, why do you need other ppl in your group? You want more bosses with tank 'n spank tactics? Does it matters if you and the other guy name of who you're gonna forget in 2 mins can kill this elite mob together, or you can just do it alone? You trying to meet people to make friends to do instances easier? You'll get them in an instance. Where you can actually see how the player acts. You don't need group quests for that. Group quests won't have hard tactics "don't stand in fire, run away if you got debuff". It'd be too complicated for devs. Honestly I have no idea why group quests exist at all anywhere... And if you're planning to get to some pro guild, then... Hmm.... Well... Pro guild might take you in as social because you're a nice chap. They won't take you in as a raider because you're a nice chap. Between you, a nice guy but a bad player and me, an asshole but a great player, they'll pick me for raids. You'll die in a fire after doing dps below tank and say "I'm so sorry guys :<". Me... I won't die and be one of top dps.
And after all these reasons I'm gonna repeat once more, if you like grouping up so much -- please by all means do. I think I even saw once or twice in my all WoW's 3.5 years experience someone looking for the group to quest together, not because it was needed, but just like that. Don't think they've found someone and know why? Because most people don't like playing together. Simple as that. You look at this little poll here? Oh well.... In my logic if they do make all quests soloable like this, it means that MOST people do NOT want group content. Otherwise they'd just left the game as it used to be or even added MORE group content. But they remove it. Who's right here, huh? "
I highlighted some of the parts of his reply that made me really sad for him...
The game WoW ... World of Warcraft has changed 300% from the time it started. It has the biggest player base and its really global. They have servers everywhere with a total player base of 10+ million.
This is one type of people that got educated from WoW, the other kind is the people that love to grief other people. They dont care about anything else as long as they can make someone else stop playing either for a few hours or for ever. These 2 types of extreme human behavior is the majority of the new age mmo community.
I think its a perfect example of how daily programing can shape a really terrible society...
