From what I've read - that was (is) a very old structure. Not ancient mind you, but still very old. That particular type of arch markes the entance to a shrine and is called a torii gate. Most torii gates are made of wood, so it's not the material that is so very special (especially given the destruction around it). It does, however, symbolize the boundary between the secular everyday world and the infinte world of the kami (Japanese for "spirits" but a word that also connotates 'natural force' or 'essence'.)
Who knows, perhaps something to do with the intent of those who constructed it - and the energy they put into it - has something to do with its survival. Talk about symbolic! :)

That's an amazing find klight. I have seen that arch standing above the atomic rubble many times in my text book but hadn't seen the recent destruction.

Can you please send me a link to where you got the above Nagasaki picture? I wasn't aware of devastation there after 2011 tsunami.
It seems that the second picture is actually a different shinto arch in the town of Otsuchi. see below reference.

i am loven that arch, if only houses where built that strong.
