FYI: Truth hurts

US Ambassador to Afghanistan Karl W. Eikenberry has slammed Afghan President Hamid Karzai for likening US-led military action in his country to an "occupation".

Eikenberry has indirectly criticized remarks made by Karzai by commenting that Afghan leaders had made “hurtful and inappropriate” comments by calling the United States an “occupier,” AFP reported.

"When we hear ourselves being called occupiers and worse, our pride is offended and we begin to lose our inspiration to carry on," Eikenberry went on to say.

The US envoy's remarks come as a response to a series of comments made by the Afghan president, particularly a last month statement that the US presence in Afghanistan could be considered an “occupying force” if strikes continued to claim the lives of civilians in the Asian country.

The death of tens of thousands of Afghan civilians as a result of NATO and US military operations since the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 has fueled mounting tensions between Karzai and his Western allies.

Despite the presence of around 150,000 US-led foreign troops in Afghanistan, the security situation has been steadily worsening across Afghanistan over the past few years.
