Angry Greeks say new taxes to hurt middle class, again

Renee Maltezou and Harry Papachristou
Reuters Thursday, June 23, 2011

(Reuters) – Greeks seething after two years of belt-tightening reacted in anger Thursday against a new round of tax rises and spending cuts worth some 3.8 billion euros which they said would again hit honest taxpayers hardest.

Coming on top of a 10-15 percent reduction on pensions and salaries over the last year and a half, the raft of new measures announced by Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos will cut average earnings by a further 3-4 percent, analysts said.

People on the streets of Athens, who have protested for weeks over the government’s plan to carve out savings of 28 billion euros by 2015, were livid at the measures they said once again failed to tackle rampant tax evasion and corruption.

“These measures aren’t fair. Shop owners who pay their taxes are treated the same way as those who don’t know what a cash register looks like,” said Kostas Batsoulis, 37, a restaurant owner in central Athens.

Wait did anyone here thought that the "Greek Gov" wouldnt accept anything they are ordered to do ? It stopped being a Greek Gov years ago... Wake up and prepare for your own country. If you think you are to big to fail ... trust me you already have failed ... they just want to steal your lives first before they kick you out of your lands. Greece is sold and we will become a 3rd world country really soon.

Maybe the UN will send troops to protect democracy in Greece for terrorist demanding food.

Its a huge eye opener for everyone living in Greece. The good thing is that people are forced to recapacitate on what is actually happening in the country and are starting to fight for things we took forgranted. After the IMF did its work here its obvious that Greece is in this situation because some one wants it that way. The debt created would be impossible to hide for as long as it was otherwise.

Things are speeding up

Doublehelix,
Better yet, look the criminals in the eyes and say "There are 3 options for you: 1) quit, or 2) go to prison. (The third one involves giving him cement shoes....)

Jackovesk,

You crack me up, but deffinetly the spirit to go. love the enthusiasm lol
believe me we do everything we can. Last week there was a huge protest infront of the parliment which the police tried to break up with tear gass,
there was no violence or anything at that moment and there were elderly people and children in the crowd but no one cared about
the tear gas even though i got a rash from it and many people got sick. The police was actually iniciating the violence to have a reason to get rid of the protest just like they did in spain.
But they are still going on no matter, people are sick of the Government pushing loans which will make things worst.

I believe things will get so much wost before they get better.
Sometimes the path to transformation is destruction.

Private banks should never be bailed out and the debt transferred to taxpayers and austerity measures put on a country.

Greeks' upper hand
Greece is bust but no one formally admits that: i.e. there is no credit event as yet. There is an unusual resistance to face the obvious reality. On one argument why Greece should not go bust is that it would give a "bad" example to other countries that restructuring debt through default is the best for these countries at the costs of creditors. The other argument, not voiced that openly, is that currently a lot of debt is held by private banks (mainly in France, Germany and the UK) if Greece goes bankrupt, these private banks would face liquidity crunch, like or even bigger than at the end of 2008, and would require "rescue" packages from the taxpayers. This, in turn, would undermine the public trust in banks. It is impossible to predict the effect but a massive run on the banks is quite realistic then. Indeed justified. So the process of "rescuing" Greece is in fact an exercise of shifting their debt from private banks' books directly onto taxpayers books. And when Greece will go under private banks will be in safe positions and the taxpayers will get the hit directly. In other words it is a pathetic pantomime played the public that banks are safe and prudent institutions to keep confidence in them.

However there is the third possibility. It is quite certain that behind many billions of euros lent to Greece there were many CDS' sold on the back of it. The Greek debt CDS market is vibrant. The European Central Bank should make it clear (down to at least 1 billion euro) how many billions of euros would have to be paid if Greece defaults on their debt. It is quite typical for CDS' that they were sold many times over exceeding the underlying debt. Hence if Greece defaulted, i.e. triggered the credit event, then the liabilities of some banks and financial institutions to the counterparties that bought CDS' may be many times (10, 20, 100 times or more: make your own guess) more than the Greek debt (going into trillions of euros). If that were the case then the financial system would go into the meltdown.

Greeks should ensure that they understand the CDS' position vis-a-vis their debt. If Greece is really such a store of toxic waste then they should use it to extract as much money as possible from the rest of the world that cannot allow them to go bust. Indeed some of these rescue loans they should use to insure many times over their own debt. So when the system collapses - as it eventually will happen - they would not be liable for their own debt but the counterparties that sold them CDS'. The financial system is so dysfunctional now, and the bankers are so greedy, that it should not be a problem to conduct such legitimate financial operations.

Incidentally there is nothing new in this analysis. This process, of toxic waste propagating through the financial system was predicted to follow the credit crunch of 2008 in the first article of this blog The largest heist in history written two and half years ago. It was clear already then that the financial system was at a state of utter dysfunctionality and stupidness.

i'm worried @ a new trend i'm noticing...a Greek - Canadian citizen i know (who frequently goes back and forth on business he owns), told me a few days ago that euro-police troops were sent to handle the crowds...

now, i'm already aware of the limitations the Greek police is subject to, by constitution, in responding to crowds...this a good thing, per-Se...this protects the innocent citizen, from the armed force...it does get abused as well...it's all debatable, anyways...

but if the source i heard is right, they're counter-balancing it with "mercenary cops"...i don't know the ins-and-outs of the schengen-euro-policing, but this might be hugely unconstitutional!!!!!

this also follows the euro-ban on Ayurvedic herbs:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/eu_herbal_medicine_ban/?rc=fb

this was tried in ontario 2 years or so ago, but thankfully was firmly opposed:

http://hour.ca/2008/05/08/will-draconian-bill-c-51-ban-natural-therapeutic-products/

it is very sad it materialized in EU, quite frankly surprised by the Mediterraneans, having considered herbs an integral part of their diets for millenniums, fell to this pit...

on the other hand, it is consistent with everything going on in EU...

here's another thought:

i'm a "little" confused...i'm always leaning towards the americas going "sour" first, and then out of the blue, the old continent shows up way too aggressive...

it's like a race, EU Illuminati "playing" patient, and then jumping ahead by big leaps, while sitting back in the newly achieved position, watching the opponent/partner working hard to get ahead...

and once in awhile, whether both "players" are "bored" or about "to pass" important stuff under the table, they launch smth that messes up Asia, their guest player, only utilized when needed!!!

i'm out of ideas, anyone got better ideas of these games???!!!

cheers
