FYI:
Afghan President Hamid Karzai has taken a swipe at Pakistan for firing more than 450 rockets into two Afghan provinces, which reportedly killed 36 people, including 12 children.
Karzai held Pakistani government accountable for the bombardment of the eastern Afghan provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar, where NATO forces have withdrawn.
He further called on Islamabad to put an end to the offensive immediately.
“They should be stopped immediately,” Karzai said in a statement issued by the presidential palace.
“If they are not being carried out by Pakistan, Pakistan should make it clear who is behind the attacks.”
Afghan border officials say Pakistan's rocket attacks on border areas have forced 200 families to flee the region, the Associated Press reported on Monday.
“All these attacks have been from Pakistan's side and for sure they are Pakistani weapons being used against innocent Afghans,” Afghan border police spokesman Edris Mohmand said.
Karzai said he raised the issue of rocket barrage with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari at a regional anti-terrorism conference in Tehran on Saturday.
The Afghan president said he also discussed the border attack with Afghanistan's NATO commander General David Petraeus and US Ambassador Karl Eikenberry during his regular national security council meeting on Sunday.
Securing the two countries border regions has become a major challenge for both Kabul and Islamabad with respect to growing militancy in the wake of the alleged killing of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in early May.
