I think the problem with the likes of Keksburg is the bell could only be powered with huge amounts of electricity, without all the cables how could it fly???

It could and did bend the space/time continuum, whether you could travel with it, I don't know.
From what I can figure, it was a ''gateway'' to other devices, in that it was the first device using those principles, thereby allowing the development of other tech/devices off of this.
