ITA Buttrose has demanded that Prime Minister Julia Gillard show strong leadership and call an election.

In a blistering serve, the businesswoman blamed a lack of leadership for Julia Gillard's dive in popularity and said she needed to tell the Greens and independents the party was over.

The Herald Sun approached prominent Australian women for their opinions on how the country's first female leader should turnaround her disastrous approval rating, which dropped to a record low of 28 per cent last month.

Buttrose said Ms Gillard needed to be bold and go to the polls, following similar calls this week by businessmen John Symond, Gerry Harvey and John Singleton.

"Australians are looking for strong leadership and because we have a minority Government with Labor continually having to capitulate to the wishes of the Greens and the independents, we are not getting it," Buttrose said.

"A true leader would take a risk; would be prepared to put her leadership on the line. I think the PM should tell the Greens and the independents the party's over and then call an election."

A spokesman for the PM - who was in friendly territory in Werribee yesterday to spruik the Government's paid parental leave scheme - declined to comment on the attack last night.

Olympic great Dawn Fraser did not mince words either, saying she believed Australians had lost trust in Ms Gillard. "She needs to stop telling lies and be honest, then the polls might go up a bit," she said.

"I might get blown down for this but I don't think we should be giving refugees everything they are getting now. Julia and her party need to put more money into pensioners."

Former Victorian Labor premier Joan Kirner sprang to Ms Gillard's defence, saying the public was about to see "Julia at her best".

"I think Ita might be revealing her political prejudices, just as I am," she said.

"Over the next two years the community is going to see Julia at her best as she takes action on a number of important issues.

"It's an extraordinarily challenging job Julia has in a hung Parliament. She spends a lot of her time negotiating and she is one of the best negotiators I have ever met and the country has ever had."

Media commentator Jane Caro, a panelist on The Gruen Transfer, said the PM should stick to her guns on issues like the carbon tax. "It's not about popularity, it's about gaining respect, and she hasn't got it yet," she said.

I think the majority of the people who voted for the Greens had a romantic vision of sustainability through (quote Bob the Builder here "reduce, reuse, recycle") and lots of tree plantings not lots of planting a new species of "carbon tax". In hindsight they would've voted independents and that's why their popularity has gone down because their expectations of these parties is not reflected in the results they thought they would see.

On memory, the only party that gave their preferred votes to last (out of 82) Labor and then Liberal was the party that wanted to make Australia a republic. Does anyone know much about them?

BTW isn't negogiations just another name for back room deals - somebody is comprimising (sp?) on something to get what they want for their electorate.
