FYI:

Afghan officials say 40 rockets have been fired into the east of the country from Pakistan, hitting both residential and non-residential areas.

Head of the border police in the region said fire was not exchanged but confirmed that a number of people were killed in the Friday rocket attacks.

"I have submitted my resignation to the Interior Ministry because I can't see my people being killed by shells fired from Pakistan," Reuters quoted Afghan General Aminullah Amarkhil as saying.

Afghanistan has called for an immediate end to the attacks and warned Pakistan that the attacks could damage ties between the two countries.

The cross-border attacks come only days after the Afghan president Hamid Karzai said Pakistan had fired 470 rockets into two of its eastern border provinces.

Pakistan says the rocket strikes are in response to what it calls attacks against its territory from Afghanistan.

The US invaded Afghanistan with the official objective of curbing militancy and bringing peace and stability to the region. However, after more than nine years the region remains unstable and militancy has expanded towards Pakistan.
