FYI:
The Quebec anti-monarchists are to stage a protest, claiming to give Prince William “the welcome he deserves” when the royal couple visits the city on July 3.
Around 300 fans of the separatist Quebec Resistance Network are expected to demonstrate outside City Hall when the royal couple gives a visit to the capital as part of their Canadian tour, group member Julien Gaudreau revealed.
Gaudreau claimed that the Resistance Network would “commit pacifist acts of civil disobedience” on July 3, to express their opposition against the amount of money being paid by the Canadian taxpayers for the event.
He stressed that the majority of Quebecers have not been in favor of the British Monarchy, accusing the federal government of carrying out a “propaganda campaign” to encourage positive attitudes among the Canadians right before the royal visit.
“For us, it's like the rest of Canada is pushing their opinions (about the monarchy) on Quebecers and we don't find that acceptable,” he said.
Monarchist League of Canada president Robert Finch expressed his concerns over the possible strikes against the royal visit, saying, “My big concern is that the world is going to be watching this visit. People might not be up to speed with the whole Canada-Quebec dynamic and might be wondering: 'What the heck is wrong over there?'”
The anti-monarchy campaign group, Citizens for a Canadian Republic (CCR), have also expressed its outrage against the royal visit.
CCR director Tom Freda claimed that this government is the country's most monarchist government since 1950s, adding that they have treated the royals as if they are the diplomats or heads of states, while they are only celebrities.
Wondering why the Canadian taxpayers should cover the costs of the Queen's family, Freda said, “we are covering the costs of her entire family, her children, grand children, sisters, brothers if she had any. The Canadian taxpayers have to pay a fortune for their security, local police forces, and other unnecessary expenses.”
Meanwhile he insisted that the Canadians are against the UK monarchy, adding that the recent poll has showed that only 32% of the Canadians think they should continue with the UK monarchy.
