UFO, 'Star Gate' or just a ballistic missile? Mysterious bubble-like light burst seen over Hawaii

Footage of this incredible bubble-like burst of light in the night sky was captured by cameras at an astronomical observatory in Hawaii.

Sky watchers have been flooding internet forums with speculation about the burst, filmed by a webcam mounted on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope on Mauna Kea.

Captured in time-lapse footage, the glowing sphere takes several minutes to expand until it virtually fills the frame - then it vanishes as mysteriously as it appeared.

(Almost) perfect sphere, not affected by atmosphere of the Earth. Very strange, looks like light/plasma discharge. Is this video in real time? If it is in real-time or close to it, we can rule out light discharge because of speed.

I do not think this can be explained by the laws of physics as we (think) we know them.

The camera was hallucinating IMO. Modern cameras are known for their love of shrooms btw.

Edit: just reread post and saw it is a time lapse. So we can rule out that it is a light burst.

Looks like approx. 1 sec of playback = 1 minute real time, should be a good starting point when slowing it down.

Edit: here's a slower version of it. It is not going to be exact because I just did a quick hack job on it, but you do get to see every frame, as it is approx. 1 frame per second (though the original video did not capture at 1 frame per second, slightly longer):

Thank you bitworm, I find it strange how it retains its form while expanding, any more ideas yet ??

Don't think we can explain this one away.
