It is very strange to my mind that swifts seem sometimes to appear and disappear.

Also there are billions of birds worldwide, so why is it that you rarely, if ever, see a dead one ( unless Haarp are involved ) .One would think that with all those birds flying around, the dead ones would be coming down like rain

There are many fewer swifts this year than any other year. I should imagine it will be the same for other birds.
