FYI:
Iran's ambassador to Iraq says US military Chief Admiral Mike Mullen's remarks indicate Washington's desperation to gain Baghdad's approval to extend its presence in Iraq.
On Friday, the chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff accused Iran of “supporting extremist troops” in Iraq who are responsible for a recent upsurge in killings of American forces.
“I believe the Americans are trying to make excuses, create Iranophobia, and cause doubt and anxiety among Iraqi officials and society. The Americans are trying to suggest that if they leave Iraq, Iraq will be threatened by Iran,” Hassan Danaeifar said on Sunday.
Danaeifar added that the US needed to find supporters in Iraq's parliament and government to extend its presence in the country.
The Iranian ambassador said Iran has been cooperating with Iraq on security issues since the overthrow of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, ISNA reported.
“Iran is located on a drugs and terrorists transit route from its eastern to western borders… we have tried to prevent their entrance into Iraq.”
“We are against insecurity in Iraq and consider Iraq's security important for our own security,” Danaeifar added.
Regarding the remarks of Iraqi Vice-President Tariq al-Hashimi about the presence of the terrorist group Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO) in Iraq, Danaeifar said his “statements are in obvious contradiction” to the formal stances of the Iraqi government.
In an interview with al-Sharqia Television on July 5, al-Hashimi said MKO's presence was “legitimate and within international jurisdiction.”
In April, Iraq's government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said Baghdad is determined to shut down Camp Ashraf, located north of the capital, and disband the terrorist group.
Members of the MKO fled to Iraq in 1986, where they enjoyed the support of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, and set up Camp Ashraf in Diyala province, near the Iranian border.
The group has carried out numerous acts of terror and violence against Iranian civilians and government officials.
The terror organization is also known to have cooperated with Saddam in suppressing the 1991 uprisings in southern Iraq and the massacre of Iraqi Kurds in the north.
