Tony Blair has sympathy, but no tips, for JuLIAR Gillard

FORMER British prime minister Tony Blair has sympathised with Julia Gillard's difficulties in selling her carbon tax, but refused to give her advice on how to improve her pitch.
Mr Blair, one of Britain's most successful Labour leaders, said the rest of the world was moving toward a low-carbon future, which he described as the “intelligent” thing to do.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Julia Gillard in Melbourne, Mr Blair said it was “inevitable” for countries to restructure their economies to achieve greater emissions reductions.
“These things are always tough to begin with,” he said.
“If you try to take difficult decisions you always end up causing yourself a certain amount of problems. But that's what you are there for.”
While he acknowledged the political difficulties involved in pricing carbon, Mr Blair, who is on a speaking tour of Australia, declined to offer Ms Gillard any advice on how to sell the policy.
“One of the things by the way I've discovered since leaving office is how much easier it is to give advice than to take the decision.”
Mr Blair said despite the failure of the Copenhagen summit to produce a binding global agreement to tackle climate change, there was still a clear global shift to reduce dependence on carbon.
He endorsed the bourgeoning clean energy industry, describing the emergence of new green friendly innovations as “immensely exciting”.
