Footage of the aftermath of the 1996 Port Arthur massacre has appeared on YouTube

HORRIFIC footage of the aftermath of the 1996 Port Arthur massacre has appeared on YouTube, sparking an urgent investigation.
The nine-minute police evidence video, which was stolen from the video archive of Tasmanian police, contains graphic images of some of the 35 people shot dead at the convict tourist spot.
Titled "Port Arthur massacre, police training video", the footage of bodies, taken by police inside the Broad Arrow cafe after Martin Bryant's rampage, showed the victims and their bullet wounds in graphic detail. Police are demanding the video be immediately removed from YouTube after it was uploaded by an account holder under the alias "FreeMartynBryant".
The user profile of FreeMartynBryant contains more than 20 videos pertaining to "conspiracies" surrounding the events of Port Arthur, with several videos claiming Bryant was innocent and a "patsy".
It is unknown how the footage was obtained, but it is not the first time it has made the internet, with a leaked copy discovered in 2004.
"Unfortunately this isn't the first time that this training video has turned up in the wider community," Deputy Commissioner Scott Tilyard said last night.
"It has been known for some years that copies of the police training video have found their way into the public domain. A copy was located at a public tip in 2004 which led to an investigation."
Police Minister David O'Byrne said the footage was unlikely to have been removed recently, after an upgrade of video archive facilities in 2004.
"Tasmania Police changed their procedures after discovering the material may be in the public domain in 2004," Mr O'Byrne said.
"I'm advised no breach has occurred since then and the current procedures for handling such material are secure."
Police have launched an in-depth investigation to discover the source of the video, but are also greatly concerned about the affect the video could have on the wider community.
"It is highly distressing not only for the families of the victims, but for the community, for these images to be available on the internet," Mr Tilyard said.
Trauma psychologist Paul Stevenson, who worked for many years with massacre survivors and victims' families, shared the disbelief and horror about the posted video.
"To post this is a nasty, terrible thing to have occurred," the Brisbane-based consultant psychologist said.
"Watching or hearing it is a re-experience, all of those things people felt at the time come back. The tragedy occurs all over again.
"This is a real worry for families of victims."
