FYI:
Senior politicians such as Ed Balls and Danny Alexander could lose their Commons seats as part of a review that will cut the number of MPs from 650 to 600.
Insiders say the Shadow Chancellor and the Chief Secretary to the Treasury are among the MPs most likely to see their constituencies abolished.
Mr Balls’s Morley and Outwood seat could be carved up, leaving him in a fight with Hilary Benn, the MP for Leeds Central.
In Scotland, Mr Alexander could end up in a fight with former Lib Dem leader Charles Kennedy. Their two seats in the Highlands could be merged.
An analysis by former Tory MP Rob Hayward, published yesterday, also concluded that Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and Chancellor George Osborne may face challenges to keep their seats – Sheffield Hallam and Tatton in Cheshire respectively. But both are expected to survive.
Party chiefs are bracing themselves for the results of the Boundary Commission’s constituency boundary review on September 13, days before the start of the party conference season.
Six Liberal Democrats – one in ten of the party’s total – are expected to see their constituencies abolished. Labour will lose 25 seats, with the Conservatives only losing 15. This would give the Tories 291 seats – only ten away from an overall majority.
It confirms Labour’s suspicions that the review, carried out by the Boundary Commission, will make it easier for the Conservatives to win an outright majority at the next election in 2015; while making the hill even harder to climb for Labour.
