FYI:

The children of mothers who were highly exposed to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) during pregnancy are more likely to develop asthma, a US study says.

Researchers at the Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, California, gave 801 pregnant women tiny monitors to wear during pregnancy. The monitors recorded the expectant mothers' exposure to low-frequency magnetic fields emitted from electric and electronic devices such as microwaves, fans, fluorescent light bulbs, vacuum cleaners, coffee grinders and power lines or stations.

However, the monitors didn't measure the individual's exposure to higher frequency electromagnetic fields generated by mobile phones and cell-phone towers.

Scientists then followed the mothers until their children turned 13. According to the results, about 21 percent of the kids were diagnosed with asthma, most of them before the age of five.

The risk of developing asthma among children born to mothers with the highest EMFs exposure was 3.5 times higher than their peers born to women with the lowest radiation level, said the report published in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.

The results also revealed that the first-born children and those born to mothers with a history of asthma are more vulnerable to developing asthma, wrote Dr. De-Kun Li and his colleagues.

Previous studies found an association between higher exposure to EMFs during pregnancy and increased risk of miscarriage.

According to some animal studies, EMFs can affect the immune system and subsequently increase the risk of developing asthma.

Researchers warned about the great risk of serious public health problems due to the individuals exposed to magnetic fields through everyday life.

Li suggested that pregnant women should lower their daily exposure to known magnetic field sources and keep distance while using electronic and electric devices.
