View Full Version : We shouldn't take uninterrupted internet access for granted: How do we stay in touch?

Dear Avalonians,

Have you considered the impact of either a planned or unplanned interuption to internet access? When you stop and think about it, it would be massive, as we have become so heavily reliant on our electronic methods of communication.

"Divide and Conquer" is a maxim that we are all familiar with, and to pull the plug on general internet and email access, perhaps even mobile/cell phone as well, would be one of the most divisive acts imaginable. It would certainly render most of us unable to organise a beer in a brewery!

In light of that, if you have not already done so, please consider exchanging your residential addresses with your Avalonian friends. If the SHTF, it would be a great pity were we not be able to contact each other, even if just to ask "How are you?".

If you are uncomfortable with the idea of making your place of residence known to others, then maybe take out a post office box. They are as cheap as chips, as any Kiwi could tell you.

This is such a simple act, and as long as our postal services are up and running, almost guarantees our ability to stay in touch. ;)

Not convinced? Here is a mind blowing alternative!

A postage stamp is far cheaper than LSD though.....man! :drag:

Disclaimer: No disrespect is intended to those with telepathic abilities. I envy you!

Best Wishes to all,

Tony.

I am considering it now :) I have no hotmail access from my computure and from most other computures as well,my friends are having the same problem, so this line of thought is very real and relevent Hayoke_11.

I dont think that postal service will work either if we will encounter problems with internet connection or with electricity .. connecting telepathicaly is an interesting idea,I have some thoughts about it,but you know what..I will leave you to guess what it is..

Anyone else has problems with accessing hotmail?

I doubt that if postal service will work properly if we will have no internet connection or electricity problems.. connecting telepathicaly is a nice idea,I have some thoughts about it,but you know what..I will leave you to guess what it is...

You are funny, Limor. Did you hear my lol, when I was reading your answer?
Here in Costa Rica, because of people using the Internet for shopping postal services have been improving.
I am so impressed.
Twenty years ago half of the mail never arrived as postal workers stole whole bags in the hope of finding cash. Not any longer.
There has been a clamp down on crime as well as corruption here.

But when things really break down will there still be air mail? Or will it be back to boats doing the delivering?
Not everyone is telepathic, and maybe that is a good thing...
just think of all those thoughts colliding in mid-air....and deliveries to the wrong address.

Hi Limor, and thanks for your reply. Sorry to hear that you are having problems with Hotmail. It may well be a temporary glitch, but nonetheless, serves as a reminder to have a back-up method of communication.

As for my ability to guess what your thought are, well, I possess the telepathic powers of a house brick. If you can wait an hour or two, I'll just duck downtown; maybe try the alternative method! :jester:

Or better still.......Just tell me.......I can't stand the suspense!

Ulli, you are far too quick, you need to let me edit all my grammer mistakes before you respond :)

I hear you.I really do. or was that Hayoka's thoughts..? oh dear, I never imagined people can think those kind of thoughts.. shame on you,really...oh,that was not directed at me? I appologize. thought traffic is quite hectic lately!

I think we better settle on a letter in a bottle.in two years, maximum three,we will be able to know how each other doing, that incase we have an ocean near where we live (if you live in the desert you are in trouble sir/madam)

But seriously ,I agree with Heyoka_11 that this is something we need to reflect on.

p.s

Maybe its time to pull our our special antennas and start to recieve and transmit

Hmmmmm, not sure about "tripping" and I too possess a "house brick" :)

My Hotmail is definitely playing up. Mails get delayed & some dont even reach their destination. I do have another although I suspect that before too long these will also be "compromised".
Even though I have the addresses of my nearest/dearest, I would be grumpy to lose this platform though.... as most of those close to me are enjoying different scenery, on their journey.

My thoughts? It is just as well that a slap in the face cannot be communicated telepathically, as that is what I would have deserved!

In all seriousness though, I think retention of the postal service would be a distinct possibility, at least in the short term.

Ye,hotmail is now unaccessible for about 2-3 days and I am curious to know if its only in Israel. It might have been that they changed something in their web and now the security level of most computures does not allow it to upload. who knows, to quote Heyuka - I possess a computure knowledge of a 'house brick'.I am personally better at thelepathy :)

Postal Mail might work, incase the interruptions are man made,if its poll shift that we are talking about than,I need to declare that I remove any self responsibility for my thoughts during that period of time.

Tony, I applaud your idea of keeping in touch. I don't have any good ideas though.
In the U.S. at least, I think mail delivery would be less efficient without electricity. So much of it is automated. I know after the tornados, we got no mail delivery til some power was restored.
Maybe without al the junk mail, the postal service could go back to hand sorting! Do you suppose our 'forever' stamps would still be valid?
