British physicist Stephen Hawking has arrived in Canada for a month-long visit to the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, Ont.
The institute said Saturday it will hold an official welcoming ceremony for Hawking on June 20. Hawking accepted a research post with the institute in 2008. The Perimeter announced last October it would establish the Stephen Hawking Centre in his honour.
Hawking is best known for his work explaining the physics of black holes. In the 1960s, he developed a degenerative disease that has impaired his ability to move and speak.
The Perimeter Institute is a research centre founded in 1999 by Mike Lazaridis, co-CEO of BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd.
