Claims emerge that Indonesian slaughtermen were paid to abuse cattle, sparking ban

This image of a cow being killed in an Indonesian abattoir helped prompt a suspension of exports.
QUESTIONS have been raised about footage which sparked a cattle export ban, with claims Indonesian abattoir workers were paid to mistreat animals.
A Senate committee was today told a taxi driver allegedly paid Indonesian slaughterhouse workers 150,000 rupiah - about $17- to abuse cattle while their ill-treatment was filmed by Animals Australia.
West Australian Liberal senator Chris Back said he had heard of the claim from an Australian meat industry consultant in Indonesia and he had no reason to doubt it.
Animals Australia's footage of inhumane treatment of cattle in Indonesian slaughterhouses sparked a temporary ban on live cattle exports after it was aired on the ABC's Four Corners program.
Animals Australia's Lyn White told the Senate's rural affairs committee that she had no knowledge of the alleged payments.
Outside the committee, Senator Back said he took Ms White at her word, and suggested Indonesian animal welfare activists could have been involved.
He said he would take advice from the committee about calling the British cameraman who had shot the footage.
Senator Back said he had been told the Indonesian slaughterman who allegedly accepted the money was beaten and his wife raped.
“What I am advised ... is that the man who was paid 150,000 rupiah, which is about eight days salary, that that person has since been turned on by his co-workers and that has been the retribution,” he told reporters.
Senator Back said he had not taken the claims to the police.
“It is a matter for Indonesia at this moment,” he said.
“It is also a matter for the Senate and this is the proper place for me to actually raise that point.”
The claims emerged as the first Australian cattle to be sent to Indonesia since the ban on live trade was lifted began being loaded on to a ship in Darwin.
About 3000 head of Elders cattle, held in yards since the federal government announced the ban in June, will leave East Arm Wharf this afternoon.
It will take four or five days for the cattle to get to the Port of Panjang on the Island of Sumatra in western Indonesia, where they will be taken to feedlots for fattening before slaughter in several months time.
Elders has been able to provide the federal government with supply chain assurance because it owns the feedlots and abattoirs in Indonesia that process their cattle.
Since the ban was lifted in early July, only Elders and Austrex have been granted export permits under the new regulatory framework.
Luke Bowen from the Northern Territory Cattlemen's Association said the industry needed to stay focused on animal welfare.
“Today we see the very first, early, tentative steps towards the recovery of this trade,” he told reporters at the wharf.
“It is a long road we have ahead of us - it is not a matter of months, it is a matter of years.”

PS - I always thought there was something SUSPECT in the ABC 4 Corners Cattle Abuse Documentary that led to the Australian Govt. Banning Live-Cattle-Exports to Indonesia..!
This Psy-Op goes a Hell-of-a-Lot DEEPER than the Animals Australia's concern for animal welfare!!!
Damage already DONE..!
Yet another Labor LIE in line with their Globalist Agenda to bring Australia to its knees before the ultimate collapse of the World-Wide Economy!

It is so difficult to be non judgmental and forgiving with this mindless insanity.
And people spending time coming with these ideas beggars belief.

Don't be so bloody stupid as to think that this is all Labors doing - A very similar story would be unfolding if it were the Libs in power...
In fact - I can guarantee it - since our lib government has put all its' drinking-water eggs in the desalination basket with the recent approval of the expansion of the binningup desalination plant - only months after the plant is put in commision!
They're all bastards nowadays - just with a different name. They even have the same policies!

I agree Jcocks. Whether its labour or Libs...THEY DO NOT RUN AUSTRALIA.
They are public, controlled puppets who have lost the essence of what it is to
be human. Everyone can remember when the interest rates were raised by
the federal reserve even after the govt warned them it will affect too many of us.
The people who control the wealth in this country control this country...not GILLARD or ABBOTT

Hi Guys,
In brief, we need an independent, (of the political parties), ombudsmann to audit the policy's and expenditure's of the government and those whom mismanage our country to be held accountable for their actions & decisions.

The ultimate abuse anyone can do to animal is kill it. There are those who are responsible for animal abuse those who kill animals (butchers) and those who pay butchers to kill animals (consumers). Anyone who pays butchers to kill animals so they can eat them is "ABUSING ANIMALS" - pointing fingers at these indonesians while behaving like the taxi driver who paid them to abuse the animals is really hypocritical IMHO.

The need to feel good, while behaving badly can only be acheived by the most sophisticated "denial software". Propaganda, brain washing, and mind control is alive and well in the meat eating communities! Shame on us for thinking "ignorance is bliss".

There are plenty of ways to humanely slaughter animals. The aim is to minimise the animals' suffering - killing an animal for meat in the most painful way possible is abuse of the highest order and is reprehensible.
I think the main impediment to more people becoming vegetarians at the moment is that there are minerals and vitamins that are easiest obtained from meat. There are vegetarian meat alternatives, but they are either bland or expensive. The trick to decreasing our reliance on meat is to provide easily obtainable, cheap, and tasty meat alternatives that provide all the minerals and vitamins the body needs...
In theory, this should not be too difficult......
(Yes I am a meat eater and yes I enjoy the taste of meat (or maybe I'm just used to it). I have been to abbotoirs and have seen the way they trat the animals. The worst I worked in was a chicken abbotoir - it was horrendous and there would often be chooks go through the stun process that would not be properly stunned and would have to go through it again. Not a very pleasant sight to see animals in such distress...)

I am a lover of animals - my apologies I thought that was the subject? Oh...its about how annoyed people are that more people are not going to be able to eat more slaughtered animals due to deceptive advertising...ooops! Sorry I better let the thread continue on in its original direction as the original direction is obviously way more important than the trivial point I was making...I know were I am not wanted. Wishing you all profound peace.
So you are a creature that likes the taste of blood in your mouth?!

I don't care whether your a Vegan or Not..! This thread has nothing to do with whether or not we are Vegetarians!
You sound exactly like the Govts. we hate!
Picking & Pushing a single point onto others with loads of 'False Guilt' attached, something similar to Guilt by Association - Mind Control..!
I started this thread to Expose the Truth about Deception within stories like these and how conveniently the Labor Govt. 'SHUT DOWN' an industry because a couple of dodgy abatiors were wongfully abusing and killing cattle, not the 700 other abatiors in Indonesia that are working within Govt. regulatory guidelines!
I found it incredibly suspicious within 1 week and with NO INVESTIGATION the Labor Govt. could shut down an industry overnight!
Has anyone ever bothered to think about the Farmers & their Families who feed us all..? Meat &/or Vegetables!
Look what happened after a Hasty Decicision from a Loser Govt, some generational farmers have been forced off their properties for good.
No that does'nt concern the likes of you at all...
For the record: I love animals too...

Erm, no.
We need to be rid of this system and soon.
We need a system that doesn't feed the greed and other negative aspects of the ego.

Thanks for the post Jack.
As I read it, one scene from Four Corners came back to me. It was the one scene that had really stuck in my memory. It was of a single, untethered animal, being whipped by a worker. Only the animal, who was standing, and the worker were in the shot. There was just an overwhelming air of falsity about it all, and it struck me straight away. I remember asking myself "Why the bloody hell would anyone do that?".
It starts to make a whole lot more sense now.
Oh Yes, welcome back LS.

This stuff goes on all the time whether people are paid for it or not. People are deprived and somehow feel by exercising so-called power or authority over an animal that they can gain some personal power back. It's all illusory. Eating animals is connected to this issue. Remember the documentary posted *the woman who thinks like a cow*? Well it goes to show that the conventional meat and dairy industry doesn't operate too compassionately nor wisely. And this woman is putting in effort to influence the farmers on a large scale in the every day practical way of raising and killing animals that reduces, or even gets rid of suffering. So anybody who consumes dairy or meat from large, conventional, fast-paced factory farm like operations is most likely unconsciously or consciously giving energy to the cruelty behind closed doors in these places.
And we must remember diet, what every body eats day-to-day is very relevant to much of the main environmental problems we are facing. Billions demanding meat regularly are demanding much land to be destroyed and many fields to be cultivated with crops for the hundreds of billions of animals that would need fed each year.
Hidden camera video secretly shot by an investigator with Mercy For Animals at an Ohio dairy farm reveals shocking, malicious cruelty to calves and cows. The video, recorded between April and May, 2010, shows dairy farm workers beating cows in the face with crowbars, stabbing them with pitchforks, breaking their tails, and punching, throwing, and kicking calves.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYTkM1OHFQg&feature=relmfu
A new Mercy For Animals investigation is pulling back the curtains on the largest dairy factory farm in New York State Willet Dairy in Locke.
In early 2009 an MFA undercover investigator worked at the mega-dairy, secretly documenting egregious acts of animal cruelty, including neglect, with a hidden camera.
Thankfully, compassionate consumers can choose to withdraw their support of these abusive industries by adopting a vegan diet.
Each time we eat we can choose kindness over cruelty. Visit ChooseVeg.com for dairy-free recipes.
Evidence gathered during the investigation reveals:
* Cows with bloody open wounds, prolapsed uteruses, pus-filled infections, and swollen joints, apparently left to suffer without veterinary care
* "Downed" cows those too sick or injured to even stand left to suffer for weeks before dying or being killed
* Workers hitting, kicking, punching, and electric-shocking cows and calves
* Calves having their horns burned off without painkillers, as a worker shoved his fingers into the calves' eyes to restrain them
* Calves having their tails cut off a painful practice condemned by the American Veterinary Medical Association as cruel and unnecessary
* Newborn calves forcibly dragged away from their mothers by their legs, causing emotional distress to both mother and calf
* Cows living in overcrowded sheds on manure-coated concrete flooring

It is the same for any similar operation in the meat and dairy industry, regardless of the type of animal being raised.

I have no idea whether it was paid or unpaid animal cruelty, all I know is that this whole debacle could've been handled properly.
If there is any conspiracy in this, then it would be the forced sell off of cattle farms to most likely foreign investors that potentially could secure an outside food source during times of drought etc.

DEAD RIGHT - Oceanz
No Conspiracy in the Fact that since Labor came into power, the 'Flood Gates' were opened even wider to overseas ownership of our best Food & Water producing land.
Couple that with these Criminal Govts allowing Gas/Oil Co's to barge onto anyones property in this Country & Frack the "Fk" out of it regardless of the risks involved!!!
How does Coal Seam Gas fracturing work?
Hydraulic fracturing - known as ''fracking'' or ''fraccing'' - which injects huge volumes of water, sand and chemicals deep into shale rock to release gas for commercial use.
How deep do natural gas wells go?
The average well is up to 8,000 feet deep. The depth of drinking water aquifers is about 1,000 feet. The problems typically stem from poor cement well casings that leak natural gas as well as fracking fluid into water wells.
How much water is used during the fracking process?
Generally 1-8 million gallons of water may be used to frack a well. A well may be fracked up to 18 times.
What fluids are used in the fracking process?
For each frack, 80-300 tons of chemicals may be used. Presently, the natural gas industry does not have to disclose the chemicals used, but scientists have identified volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene.
In what form does the natural gas come out of the well?
The gas comes up wet in produced water and has to be separated from the wastewater on the surface. Only 30-50% of the water is typically recovered from a well. This wastewater can be highly toxic.
A boom in fracking over the past decade has fuelled an unlikely alliance between environmentalists and farmers, who claim the method contaminates ground water and soil, is linked to earthquakes and may even cause diseases such as leukaemia.
There Should Be A Moratorium on Fracking until all health, social and environmental risks have been examined. The technique was recently banned in France, is subject to a moratorium in South Africa and has become a battleground in the US.
There Should Be A BAN on Foreign Ownership of our best Food & Water producing land!
