A plane flies a banner over lower Manhattan reading "Thanks for the downgrade. You should all be fired".

That's the message that greeted anyone looking out an office window at the right time in Lower Manhattan, New York overnight.

The brief but stinging rebuke trailed behind a plane flown by a woman fed up with Wall St and politicians after the US credit rating was downgraded over the weekend.

The lowering of the US's credit rating by ratings agency Standard and Poor sparked global financial panic and fears of a second recession in both the US and Europe.

The pilot of the cheeky plane is reportedly St. Louis, Missouri woman Lucy Nobbe, a vice president at private equities and investment firm Wedbush Morgan Securities.

Ms Nobbe told the Observer she wanted to fly the sign over Washington D.C but found out it was forbidden in the city's restricted airspace.

"So I chose Wall Street instead, but didn’t specifically intend it to fly over S&P. I’m just a mother from St. Louis who feels the only reason we got downgraded was people in politics."

There was early speculation the plane was targeting the offices of Standard & Poor, but she and a friend who also spoke to the Observer said that wasn't the case.

“She’s not mad at S & P," the anonymous friend said.

"She’s mad at Washington D.C. She called me up to have me talk her out of it, and of course, I didn’t.

“Because I think it’s funny.”

Fortune reports such a flight could cost up to US$1500.

The friend noted Ms Nobbe "does not have a lot of discretionary cash as others are saying. She’s a single mother of two. She’s been working and paying taxes since she was 16 years old."

Pictures and reports of the banner were widely tweeted by bemused workers.
