View Full Version : Transition to new Hosting Infrastructure Complete-Your Help Needed!
hostingtechs
7th June 2010, 17:55
Hello everyone,
This thread is to gather opinions on the new hosting infrastructure, as well as any errors you encounter.
For the technically interested, the site is running on a cluster of servers. The front end is provided by Varnish HTTP Accelerator. This communicates via localnet to another server running nginx. This server is the primary web server, and also runs the MySQL server that the site uses for its databases. This nginx server delegates requests to 3 upstream nodes we have set up. These 3 upstream nodes are running factcgi, with php5.
When a request comes in, the Varnish web front server first checks to see whether the requested content is cached. If it's cached, and it's determined that the "expires" header is in the future, Varnish serves it directly from the memory cache. If the requested resource is static, it requests it from the nginx server, and simultaniously sends it to the client as well as adding it to the cache. If the content requested is dynamic, Varnish sends the request to Nginx, nginx offloads it to an upstream server, and then sends the completed page back to Varnish. Varnish is currently set up to maintain a round-robin cache of elements, so items that are requested often, such as the header banner, are always in memory, and can be served in milliseconds. Have questions? Want more info? Want tutorials/help setting up your own? Feel free to post as well.

I got like a 503 Error and it said Meditation when I reloaded the New Posts screen. Will the error codes have these word associations?

i had a lot of trouble initially just getting through the invitation process. Richard's patience and that of Staff helped me accomplish this, then i went and hit the submit buttons incorrectly and broke the link. It turns out i had to restart my modem.
Is it possible to change fonts, color, etc. here...
To make it possible to do so would make the site more pleasant to read... if someone had the feel for such things...
For someone as competent with links and the like, such as Morguana, swearing like a seaman probably is tempting...

Hi Morguana,
I am going to re-quote everything as I said in the email I sent you.
No worries about yesterday, I understand how frustrated you are and you have a right to be after all of this downtime and these issues. Hopefully we've gotten things resolved once and for all though now.
As for the screen shot, thank you, it is very helpful. To me, it looks like your browser is not fully rendering the page. Can you try these below in order, and let me know if any of them work?
1. Change the vbulletin theme to another option
2. Try another browser
3. Try another computer
Because we haven't gotten any other reports of this issue, it sounds like it is something local on your computer that is keeping the rest of the page from loading.
Let me know what your discoveries are please :-)
Thanks!

Morguana, I had the same problem about a week ago, what you do is uninstall firefox, of course download the newest version, then reinstall again. I had a number of addons on my previous browser and apparently this can contribute to compatibility issues and glitches since firefox is usually updated very quickly, the addons can become outdated, so don't install any addons at least for the moment. Hope this helps.

I would like to post this here not to demean anyone, but to help foster a little understanding for our Fantastik Techs.
For those of us who know anything about I.T., and for those users who don't (or care to) know anything about it, this article serves as a reminder and/or gives insight to the complexities, difficulties, and hair pulling involved in running and maintaining a website such as this.
Great Work Guys!
Why website crashes are unavoidable -- at least for now
Obviously, no one likes it when websites go down. And, for website owners, even a few hours offline can mean a big hit to revenue from ads. But if you understand how the Internet works, there's one thing you realize quickly: Websites will continue to crash from time to time, and, without a big rethink of the system, there's no way to prevent that completely.

I don't know what this is, but TPTB just don't seem to be on our side. If you're wondering why things have been down for the last few hours, basically one of the routers at the data center (nothing in our possession or under our control) started looping routes around in circles and not letting new traffic enter or leave. The technicians on site were able to resolve the issue by swapping out the router with a replacement. Everything should be fine now.
Our sincere apologies for this inconvenience.

Some programmers can be a little odd in their humor, and when writing programs and error messages insert inside jokes. I don't really understand why they give it that odd name, but oh well :)

Hi Karl,
I've been off and on the forum all day (since 7 am) and, although I've only been in "Read Mode" today, I haven't experienced any problems with connecting or any unusual load times. It's actually been a satisfying experience (for a change)! LOL!
I noticed no-one has responded to your question yet so I thought I'd chime in for you. I think most everyone is focused on the Gulf Oil Disaster (as I have been) so, if that is the case, that would be a good sign for you!
Great Job and Thanks!

And thanks for posting, I was beginning to wonder why no one was responding. But I do agree with you, the oil spill is a very concerning issue, so I am glad that people are able to dedicated their time to it rather than worry about technical issues.

Well for me avalon is still dreadfully slow as usual, especially with the more advanced features, and even when it does function well its rare, as it only lasts briefly before acting up again, especially when I'm trying to post a reply. Frankly I'm at a loss as to the core of the problem and why it is recurring.
Actually my experience with the forum sucks. Load times from 30 sec up (with few exceptions). I haven't posted about this because i was too pissed off and still am a little. It took 3 days to have mail notices back, i need those so i can keep track of the threads. I have a lot more to say but i don't want to... i won't consume energy this way and i'm not in the mood. I just kind of lost my interest in reading and posting around here. Too many problems. Agreed the techs are nice guys but the services are not so nice...
And please don't reply with the kind of explanations that you do for people that have no idea how a server works. I'm a 100% pure linux user not a windows user that mouse clicks all day. I'm sure you understand what i mean...
/later edit: i reloaded the page and i saw that in fact it took exactly 29 sec to load completely.

First of all i didn't said i'm such a smart linux guy, there are others more geeky than me in the open source community.. i said i'm not the typical microsoft windows "clicker" so that you will not come with "those kind" of explanations. I use Linux and only linux for everything and i used it for years, i'm completely anti-windows (i won't use such a "low" OS). I have over 10 years of almost non-stop computers interacting - i don't know them all and i don't want to know them all. As you probably know there is a lot to know. I had enough. Recently i turned more to spirituality and almost entirely left behind the "anormal" use of computers.
Secondly i don't know what's the problem because is not much that i can study on my part... and even so i didn't said i'm so knowledgeable that i can provide a fix in a blink of an eye because i'm almighty linux guru. I don't know what you have there... what setup etc. And this is your job not mine, and don't get me wrong... i would help if i could. One thing i can say: the problem is not from me so don't think of my internet connection or anything like that. I'm sure i'm not the only one who has this problem. I admit that sometimes i'm a little arrogant but i was kind of pissed off (i don't use this as an excuse)... and you guys are nice enough to register here and post about problems and listen to people when they have problems with the forum etc... but you must admit also that the service sucked until now (i hope it won't anymore). Can we be friends even if i said that?

Okay, I apologize for misinterpreting your statement. But yes I know the feeling. I have XP on dual boot on my laptop, and that is it for Windows. I only have that because of a few programs I need to use that are not WINE compatible. Other than about 2 or 3 programs though, I refuse to use Microsoft for anything. Out of about 150 servers we run, 1 of them is Windows and it is only Windows because it runs Windows Media Services, something that is grandfathered in to previous clients that we do not sell anymore.
Secondly i don't know what's the problem because is not much that i can study on my part... and even so i didn't said i'm so knowledgeable that i can provide a fix in a blink of an eye because i'm almighty linux guru. Well see that is what is confusing us. The people with problems are making the problems sound like they are due to the MySQL database being slow/vBulletin trying to make it do too much, but if that were the case everyone would be affected. Because only some people are having problems, it would suggest a network issue, but there is nothing wrong with any of the traces we have looked at, and no one at all is having problems viewing the Avalon home page, so we're pretty stumped at the moment. When this thread was started, people were reporting very good results and it seemed that the general consensus was that everything was great again, but we haven't been able to get any updates since due to the popularity of other threads.
I admit that sometimes i'm a little arrogant but i was kind of pissed off (i don't use this as an excuse)... and you guys are nice enough to register here and post about problems and listen to people when they have problems with the forum etc...
I understand fully. No need to worry. Thanks for the comments though, and yes I will remind everyone that most hosting companies would refuse to have any contact with your customers even if you were on a managed hosting plan. We thought it best if we talked directly with the community so that we could get a better idea of what was going on, and get results more rapidly.
but you must admit also that the service sucked until now (i hope it won't anymore). Can we be friends even if i said that?
I'm kind of confused now...I thought you said it was still awful? And yes, there were periods where it was awful, but the general performance in the last 3 weeks should have been quite good obviously excluding the downtime, most recently having nothing to do with us. And yes of course we can be friends :)

I apologize too, i am sorry... i let myself get carried away.
I'm kind of confused now...I thought you said it was still awful?
I said it sucked because before there were even more problems but now the big problem for me at least... is the load time.
The homepage indeed works more than fine... it loads pretty fast. I made a ssh tunnel acting like a sock server and i connected through to see what's happening, i used two different linux servers. While i didn't expect to boost my speed i saw that other forums loaded fast without problems but the avalon forum loaded as slow as when i connect directly. This was just useless didn't expect otherwise. The problem is obvious related to the forum only not the whole server. I use chrome because on linux is much faster and "great" than firefox (and i like it more), but i tried with iceweasel (firefox) too. I browsed the forum logged in and logged out to see the differences. At first logged out almost everything loaded fine but then started to choke. I cleared all cache cookies etc. The reason for which i tried logged out and logged in is because I had the idea that logged in might be slower due to some settings on the account that can cause the "bugs". There are moments when threads load faster. When i browse through categories / sections of the forums it loads fast enough... until i click on a thread and after that not even browsing through categories is not as fast as before clicking on the thread. It hangs it waits for the server response. I saw you're using debian as a distro and nginx as a webserver. I don't know much about nginx but nice choice with the distro. I'm using debian too.
I used linux and didn't get what was so great about it, I can get more done and have better programs to choose from with XP so I stopped using lenux.

I can't explain you why linux is so great, i don't think someone can, or can but you will just hear it not feel it. You have to slowly see for yourself. Linux is like alien tech compared to windows. You can't understand linux unless you lose the windows mentality and invest time and patience to learn and understand. And that is not something that anybody wants to do or can do. There are people that just want to visit sites listen some music see a movie maybe... watch something on youtube, simple stuff, and is nothing wrong with that, not everybody wants to be computer geek / expert. And because most of the people are used with windows it's easier for them. But linux is just different not necessary harder, it may seem harder at first but it's not. As for "better programs to choose from with XP"... well not true, you have plenty with few exceptions... meaning that there are good programs for windows that are not for linux and that is because microsoft has deals with big companies to maintain the monopole and because most of the people use windows already and are used to it and because linux is free (not much money involved). Linux is freedom. I wish i can share with everybody in one split of a sec what linux is all about but i can't. There will always be someone that will contradict me with different arguments that they feel are solid... but i know that is because they lack of understanding of the open source and linux world. Despite what i wrote i wouldn't recommend you to just go and install linux. It is my humble opinion that for what you need windows is enough. It may sound like i am contradicting myself and i'm sorry to say that linux is not for everybody and that is just because not everybody can get away from the windows mentality and from the brainwashing to try something different and new for them (and better?). There is brainwashing regarding windows vs linux just like with anything else in the world like most of you here on this forum very well know.

Out of curiosity, can you let me know if av1 loads fast, or do they both have issues?

Yeah I noticed that too. Firefox seems to have become pretty awful in Linux, so I have switched to Chrome. While it's not my favorite, it does the job so I can't complain.
I saw you're using debian as a distro and nginx as a webserver. I don't know much about nginx but nice choice with the distro. I'm using debian too.
Yep, after using Debian on our NAS units for months and having no problems to date and needing no reboots whatsoever, we decided we would move off of CentOS and give it a try. As for Nginx, it runs a lot of major sites such as WordPress and Hulu. We tried Apache about a month ago again, and within an hour the server totally died (and no, we're not poorly configuring it). I've pretty much turned fully against Apache unless it's for something very small with no traffic, such as development servers. Even then though, you might as well run Nginx if Nginx is what will power the production server. We use Litespeed for our shared hosting customers due to how well it works integrating with cPanel, but it would get pretty costly if we used it for everything. Plus, Nginx is open source so it is easier to work with if you need a lot of custom configuration for a site such as Avalon. See more about Nginx here:

Despite what i wrote i wouldn't recommend you to just go and install linux. It is my humble opinion that for what you need windows is enough. It may sound like i am contradicting myself and i'm sorry to say that linux is not for everybody and that is just because not everybody can get away from the windows mentality and from the brainwashing to try something different and new for them (and better?). There is brainwashing regarding windows vs linux just like with anything else in the world like most of you here on this forum very well know.
I totally agree. I have a friend who I am in the process of switching to Linux, and each day he likes it more and Windows less. At first he complained a lot to me about how unlike Windows it was, but that's the thing. In order to see its true beauty, you have to have patience and wait for it to grow on you. I also agree about the programs part. There are WAY more programs available for Linux, you just have to know what you are doing to be able to use all of them. The few Windows programs that I need are the exception to the rule. For example, Citrix XenCenter has a version for Linux, but there critical features lacking.

I guess i'm behind. I wasn't interested that much in web admining / scripting languages / web designing and related and so i'm no expert in html java php css xss cpanel joomla phpmyadmin and such. I liked more interacting directly with the OS... C programming / network admining and security related are just a few... although the battle for security is on many fronts.
Out of curiosity, can you let me know if av1 loads fast, or do they both have issues?
Sure. I just browsed the AV1 forum and it works great. Very smooth.

That's cool. I have always wanted to get into that stuff myself.

That makes me lean toward some weird bug with the latest version of vBulletin. Why it's working great for other people though beats me.

Thursday afternoon Avalon went down for like 10 minutes, and when it came back up the the Avalon banner is not right?
Everything else is Ok, and the page in fully loading, so the problem is not on my end?
Cheers

Hi Grizzom,
Yes, it was down for about 10 minutes while we were messing with the Nginx configuration file trying to get the translation script working. It's quite a hassle as it's a very complicated script. Luckily we were successfully able to get everything smooth with that.
As for the messed up layout, a few people have reported this in the past but it seems to go away after a few hours if you clear your cache and cookies, and then log out and back in. Since I'm not seeing it myself, I really don't know what is causing it. Try that and let me know if it's still messed up.
Thanks.

Hello Everyone,
So if you're wondering what happened this evening, one of the Avalon mods accidentally overwrote the vBulletin configuration file, thus losing the connection to the database. After trying to re-write the config file for about an hour, we decided to just restore from the backup from yesterday. We have restored, and also made a backup of the db and restored from it.
Everything should be back up and working now and no posts should have been lost.

So earlier when I logged back in after cleaning out my cache and cookies it loaded up in Avalon breeze?
I had set to Gaian, and it changed to Avalon breeze?

If afirmation is the objective, I'll say, errrr.... well done chaps, it's coming along........
If down right pissed off frustration is the way to go, it's........ fer-crisake-man....... what the hell is going on here!
Can't say I know for sure which way is the right way right now but, boot into ass is looking appropriate........
( I know if my kids were this disfunctional, I'd be seriously looking for a rebate on my parental responsibilities.)

Can you try changing it back and seeing if that corrects it?

I understand your frustrations, but please understand that this wasn't caused by us. Things were running great until one of the PA mods made a mistake due to his FTP program being laggy. We all make mistakes sometimes.

Hello Everyone,
I just wanted to say that we are sorry things had to come to this, but we are no longer hosting Avalon as per Bill's decision.
It has been a pleasure working with all of you, and all of us here at KWD Services, Inc. wish everyone at Avalon the best of luck.
If you need anything, feel free to email me at karl@kwdservices.com
