The US military has designed the world's fastest plane - and it would be capable of travelling from London to Sydney in less than an hour
9331
The Falcon HTV-2 - which travels 22 times faster than a commercial airliner - will be launched at 3pm.
Attached to the back of a rocket, the plane will blast off from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, before detaching at the edge of space.
Engineers then hope to guide the plane on a hypersonic flight, reaching speeds of around 13,000mph upon its return to Earth.
Travelling at about 20 times the speed of sound and withstanding temperatures of 2,000C, the plane was designed as part of a research project.
A previous launch attempt was abandoned and plane designs changed in April due to a fault on board the aircraft.
Nine minutes into the mission, at which point the plane had flown for 139 seconds reaching 16,700mph, an onboard computer detected an anomaly and ordered the plane to ditch in the ocean for safety reason.
A second attempt on Wednesday was delayed to Thursday because of poor weather conditions.
Although the flight will not be broadcast, it will be possible to follow the plane's progress through the US Defence Agency's Twitter page.http://mobile.twitter.com/DARPA_News
Hey but we all know that they have technology to go even faster with the supressed technolgy hidden from us

I hope the other craft floating around out there are aware of the flight.... nothing worse than some plonker hogging the fast lane....
Sorry could not resist....

Do we REALLY need this thing? Shouldn't they be trying to make improvements to our world instead?
I mean, we could use the endless, clean, free energy technologies more than another war machine. The world could be flying in crafts like the OTC-1X that uses no fuel and can run forever.
We have a planet in dire need of care. But there are so many weapons everywhere. How DEAD should people have to be before they're satisfied?
Sorry, this may be impressive to some, but not to me. I'd be more impressed if antigravity crafts were available for everyone to fly, so that roads can be dismantled. We use too many resources just to build roads and upkeep as it is....

Not to me either,We have technology thats been supressed from us for years, and if any inventor defies the laws of physics they will never get ther invention put in the public domain.

I know we have the capacity for great inventions, but what is the point if we donīt even know how to help our fellow man?

The Falcon Hypersonic Test Vehicle 2 (HTV-2) - capable of reaching any target in the world in less than an hour - began a test flight from atop a rocket on Thursday.
Contact was also lost with a similar craft during the first mission.
The HTV-2 is designed to travel at 13,000mph (21,000km/h).
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa), which is funding the HTV-2 programme and overseeing the tests, said the small craft was capable of reaching speeds of Mach 20.
The aircraft took off using a Minotaur IV rocket from Vanderberg Air Force Base in California early on Thursday.
Engineers programmed the HTV-2 to launch from the edge of space, separate from its rocket and crash into the ocean.link (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-14497641)

An unmanned experimental aircraft designed as a global bomber prototype, capable of gliding down from the upper atmosphere at 20 times the speed of sound, has lost contact with ground control on its second test flight, a Pentagon agency said.
The Falcon HTV-2 was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on a rocket and successfully separated from the launch vehicle, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) reported.
The arrowhead-shaped plane was expected to separate from the rocket near the peak of its ascent and glide back to earth, reaching hypersonic speed before rolling and plunging into the Pacific ocean, according to a test diagram posted online.
The hypersonic plane, which is supposed to travel at Mach 20, or 21,000 kph, could potentially provide the US military with a platform for striking targets anywhere on the planet within minutes using conventional weapons.
Philip Ewing, the editor of online journal DOD Buzz told Al Jazeera that "the Pentagon has, in past decade or so, wanted to have something it calls 'prompt global strike' with the ability to strike a target anywhere in the world within an hour.
"It is possible that the Pentagon has learned some valuable lessons from the crash, especially in dealing with something this fast at that kind of altitude," Ewing said, adding " the US would most likely say that mistakes like this must be when developing new forms of technology like this and that today's incident would inform other projects in the future."
Global strike potential
Such a weapon, still in development, is part of what the US Air Force has dubbed "prompt global strike" capability.
"The ultimate goal is a capability that can reach anywhere in the world in less than an hour," DARPA said on its website.
About 10 minutes after the flight began on Thursday, DARPA tweeted that the mission was "on track, entering glide phase."
But about 26 minutes later, DARPA tweeted that its monitoring stations had lost contact with the glider.
"Downrange assets did not reacquire tracking or telemetry," DARPA tweeted about an hour later. "HTV-2 has an autonomous flight termination capacity."
The loss of communications in the final stages of the test flight was a failure for the agency. During the initial flight test in April, researchers lost contact with the vehicle about nine minutes into the flight.

I agree, publicity bungle to have us believe our technology advancements
are still rusty..... As many know, it is the opposite.
Quick equation for people unaware.
If the black ops took control of all true advancements in lets say 1954....
And a rough guide of secret advancements compared to public is 30 years
for every year they suppress their findings.....
The PTB have capabilities and technologies 1710 years ahead of our current
understanding.
THINK ABOUT IT.....In 1700 or so years what will we be capable of?????
LETS WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!!

now that is an interesting comment to make, remember the supposed bomb being dropped on the moon recently in order to create a plume for investigation, the one that did not explode but just ,kind of 'landed'.
my thoughts are that this was the first drop of a stash of gold that can be picked up at a later date.

Now this is the second disappearance of a DARPA Hypersonic jet.Now this jet is capable of going FASTER THAN MACH 20 may have shot into warp speed in some way. Perhaps by going so fast it created its own worm hole like tunnel disappearing from radar in a flash. Understand the first DARPA jet also disappeared the same way. If you remember Star Trek "First Contact" then you will remember that Zephram Cochrane made the first warp capable craft (looks same as DARPA craft, see video below at 2:04) and that achievement for humanity allowed aliens to make first contact. Well the same thing here with DARPA but the DARPA jet was unmanned and unable to return, therefore no first contact will occur. You see aliens have rules just like we do. If however the DARPA craft carries a human and...returns, then the aliens may introduce themselves to us, raising the level of awareness of humanity. When you ask? At about the end of 2012 they will have the next DARPA flight. Dec 21 perhaps

I donīt think it could carry a human, because no man could stand a mach 20 + speed. The G forces would be enormous. Also, Mach 20 speeds arenīt enough to create a worm hole.

I believe that if anyone had a fantastic invention, they should just look for regular people like us to finance them and be partners....Let those be the first recipients of the new inventions. Then let it spread out from them.... IMO getting it out secretly to start is the best way to affect a change before anyone at the top could stop it. If people loved the inventions, then it would be like an unstoppable tsunami. Just try to take it away from them then....!
(In case you're wondering if I care about the economy, I don't....As we all know, the system has been corrupted to the point where it needs a complete overhaul....When THIS type of tsunami rolls in, they'll know the jigs up....)

Am I the only one who's wondering how long this "Falcon" would need to do the Kessel Run? :P The funny thing is though, that regardless of "how fast" this vessel or the money it's worth was lost it still stands no chance in comparison with the speed our goverments are losing money in general. But I guess you can't have it all. :P

In 1973 a thirty feet diameter flying saucer shaped craft - built in Melbourne - flew from East Sale RAAF base to Melbourne in two minutes, equivalent to 5,000 Km/hour. This craft did not produce a sonic boom as it was de-materialised once its electromagnetic drive was engaged, and could fly straight through a solid object. This was also not its top speed. Stan Deyo was one of those working on the project. A close friend of mine saw photos taken of this craft when it was being tested, three years later in 1976. Just imagine what has been developed since that time.
What a waste of money.
