Former NSC'er Richard Clarke Charges CIA Knew and Covered Up Intel on Saudi Terrorists

August 13, 2011 • 6:20PM

As part of a documentary to be released on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, former National Security Council counter-terrorism head Richard Clarke charges that the CIA covered up crucial information in 2000 and 2001 that could have prevented the attacks. Clarke, in interviews released to the Daily Beast website, charged that the CIA was attempting to recruit two of the 9/11 hijackers, and therefore withheld information from the White House, the NSC, and the FBI. Clarke has charged that the cover-up at the Agency came from the very top — staring with then-CIA Director George Tenet.

What is even more fascinating about the Clarke charges, is that the two hijackers he is referring to are Nawaf al-Hazmi and Khalid al-Mihdhar, the two West Coast-based Saudis who were the recipients of funds from the Saudi embassy account of Prince Bandar bin-Sultan and his wife. It was the Bandar-Hazmi-al-Mihdhar financial links that were covered up by the George W. Bush White House in the now infamous 28-page chapter from the Joint Congressional 9/11 probe, which remains classified to this day.

Clarke was in charge of counter-terrorism at the NSC under Presidents Clinton and G.W. Bush. He charged in the documentary interview that he gave in 2009, that the CIA had shared massive amounts of information with him in the run-up and aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, but had not made any mention of the fact that they knew that al-Hazmi and al-Mihdhar had been in the United States since late 2000. Clarke said that if he had known about the presence of the two men in the United States, "We would have conducted a massive sweep. We would have conducted it publicly. We would have found those assholes. There's no doubt in my mind, even with only a week left. They were using credit cards in their own names. They were staying in the Charles Hotel in Harvard Square, for heaven's sake. Those guys would have been arrested within 24 hours."

Both Tenet and Cofer Black, the head of the CIA's Counterterrorism Center at the time of the 9/11 attacks, have denied the charges and denounced Clarke for his reckless allegations.

Oops, wrong R.
It was Robert Gates that coined the name.
My memory played up on me.
Got a memory like a steel trap I do.
The springs are a bit knackered though! :p

Thanks Ktlight interesting but it looks like a diversion to me............It goes against eveything we've learn't already that the CIA set up Al Qaeda , to say they had no sources in the organisation
they set up is unlikely..........They meet a saudi intelligence officer possibly thats because CIA/Saudi are linked...The only person playing us is Clarke.
He is saying no one knew in goverment to cover CIA asses . He is just muddying the waters imho .... He knew where they were because they were patsies .
It would mean all the mass of other 9/11 evidence . No air deffence , Nist whitewash etc etc is just incompetence. The more I'm writing this down the more disinfo
bull**** he is saying...It is a obvious intelligence ploy to put off all the young researchers , and get internet play ..........Listened twice ....Still not buying it....
worth keeping abreast of the otherside though........................Cheers Steve

Good info.but it seem to me either not well informed, withholding more important info. to get things stirred up for more disclosure step by step, or disinfo.as a kind of damage control/distraction..
I can't help but feel suspicious, but then I am a tad bit jaded!
