Rick Perry announces US presidential bid - Texas Governor Rick Perry joins the 2012 race for president with an announcement sure to reverberate across the country.

It was Michele Bachmann's big moment in the political spotlight and Rick Perry stomped all over it.

Despite her victory on Saturday in the Iowa straw poll, the first big test of the 2012 Republican US presidential campaign, Bachmann had to share the national stage with Perry's public leap into the White House race.

It won't be the last time the congresswoman from Minnesota and the governor of Texas step on each other's toes.

Both aim for the backing of the same bloc of religious and social conservatives who dominate Iowa's kick-off nominating contest.

Both hope to become the chief Republican alternative to nominal front-runner Mitt Romney in the 2012 fight for the right to challenge President Barack Obama.

And both will be in Waterloo, Iowa, Bachmann's birthplace, on Sunday night to speak at a local fund-raising dinner in what looks like Act One of a beautiful rivalry.

Michelle Bachmann ... suddenly facing serious competition.

"Perry is the looming presence in Michele Bachmann's future," said Dennis Goldford, a political scientist at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. "They appeal to the same people."

Perry and Bachmann share a deep Christian faith, a hearty distrust of the federal government and core conservative principles on social issues like abortion and gay marriage.

But Bachmann, founder of the Tea Party caucus in Congress and an early supporter of the movement to reduce spending and government, has faced more questions than Perry about whether she can expand her appeal to a broader electorate.

Her straw poll win showed the power of her appeal to conservatives in Iowa but making her pitch to moderates and independents in states like New Hampshire and Florida could prove a tougher task.

Hearts of the right wing

"Right now, she can capture the hearts of the right wing," Republican consultant Alex Castellanos said on CNN. "But she has to prove that she can be a general election candidate before Republicans will really take her seriously and move her into that top tier."

At the straw poll, Bachmann left no doubt about where she was aiming her remarks.

"Whether we are Tea Party or social conservatives or fiscal conservatives or national security conservatives, if we stick together ... greatness will once again belong to the United States of America," she said.

Perry, who hosted a national day of prayer a week ago and once asked drought-plagued Texans to pray for rain, also aims his appeal at social and religious conservatives.

But he also stresses his record of more than a decade of executive experience heading Texas, which has had strong job growth that could help him win over the party's pro-business wing and independents.

On his visit to more moderate New Hampshire on Saturday, Perry dropped much of the social rhetoric and focused his remarks on the economy and jobs.

Bachmann is also certain to hear more criticism of her record, or lack of it, in Congress after rival Tim Pawlenty, the former Minnesota governor, focused on her credentials during Thursday's televised Republican debate.

Pawlenty ripped Bachmann for touting her opposition to higher spending, the healthcare overhaul and other government programs that passed over her objections.

But Pawlenty limped to a distant third-place finish in the straw poll and on Sunday became the first major Republican contender to exit the race. His campaign had been struggling while Bachmann was going strong.

The straw poll win "is a big boost for her," former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, who finished second in the 2007 straw poll, told reporters.

"Whoever wins or just comes in second, they get gas for their fire. Whoever doesn't, they get water for theirs," he said. "People underestimate her. She stands her ground."

WHO IS - Michele Bachmann?

The ascendant queen of the Tea Partyers was once a… tax collector. For the IRS. (“Bachmann was a tax prosecutor for the IRS – I can’t think of any professional less desirable to the Tea Party.”)

Supposed Tea Partier? :nono: (Gimma A Break!!!) Bachmann voted for the 'PATRIOT ACT'!

February 8. Quote: “This vote was not for a full reauthorization of the Patriot Act. As a member of the House Intelligence Committee, I look forward to briefings and reports from our intelligence community that will help us develop longer term solutions as we protect our nation against international terrorism.”
She supported the “surge” in Iraq and the neocon warmonger positions of the neocons during the Bush Administraion.

The Bachmann-Palin neocons in Tea Party camouflage are going to take us down the same road as Bush – the same road followed unswervingly by Obama.

The globalist puppet masters need world war in order to sell their snake oil of globalist government and a return of serfdom to the masses.

Bachmann is on the Order Out o Chaos gang’s team.

Bachmann kisses war criminal and neocon tool George Bush.

Again 'No' Mention of Ron Paul

FYI - The Iowa Straw Poll Mystery?

To be very clear, Congressman Ron Paul and Senator Michele Bachmann only had 152 votes difference in the Straw Poll.

Bachmann beat Ron Paul by 152 votes, meanwhile 218 votes seem to be unaccounted for publicly. While I am sure there is a very good reason for the missing votes, this is precisely what causes distrust of government and the media.

NOW YOU DO THE MATH..?

UPDATED: Bachmann Rigged Iowa Poll by Buying "At Least" 4000 Votes

Congresswoman Michele Bachmann is being called the "Queen of the Straw Poll" after her victory at the Iowa straw poll yesterday for the GOP presidential nomination.

Bachmann, who finished with 4823 votes, narrowly beat second-place finisher Congressman Ron Paul who collected 4671 votes.

http://www.zerohedge.com/sites/default/files/images/user5/imageroot/2011/08/bachmann%20corndog.jpg

The Ames poll, although important because of the early significance of Iowa in the primaries, is nonbinding and unscientific.

AFP reported that "It has been criticized as playing too heavily in favor of candidates that are well financed, since their campaigns can buy the $30 tickets for their supporters to attend and presumably vote in their favor."

The Ames event was considered to be a Republican fundraiser, yet Bachmann's campaign bought and "handed out at least 4,000 free tickets to supporters."

Therefore, Bachmann appears to have rigged the vote at a minimum direct cost of $120,000 to her campaign.

Another anomaly with the vote surfaced this morning when it was discovered that 218 votes went unaccounted for. In other words, these votes were in the overall tally but not registered to any of the candidates.

One would think the media would attempt to uncover the discrepancy given the razor thin 152-vote margin between Bachmann and Paul. However, so far, they've been content to call her the "queen" of the event.

Update by Paul Krugman:

Headlines on FoxNews, CNN, MSNBC, and all over the web should have been “Randy Travis Wins Ames Straw Poll Edging out Ron Paul” instead of headlines which touted Congresswoman Michele Bachmann’s victory.

Bachmann spent upwards of $1 million, paid for over 6000 tickets, paid for Grammy Award winning, country musician Randy Travis to show up, and bussed in Randy Travis fans in order to secure 152 more votes than Congressman Ron Paul. Michele Bachmann’s camp handed out flyers, which stated that in order to see the entertainment, you had to vote for her first. Here is an image of the flyer that was around Ames,

http://unelected.org/wp-content/110813_bachmann_rule_465.jpg

While Bachmann gave out over 6000 tickets(worth $180,000 at $30 each), she received ~4800 votes, so 20% of those who she bought tickets for voted for other candidates. A country concert, a ride to that concert, and various other free stuff is a great deal for a simple vote.

Though she may have won the Ames Straw Poll, Bachmann will not be able to bus in country music fans for a free show for a vote scheme at the Iowa Caucus in 2012. As Joe Scarborough put it, “She is a joke. Her candidacy is a joke.”

I keep saying that the sheeple are waking up a bit. Taking her money and voting the way they want to, I like that. May we see more of it.

This is disgraceful. But why am I not surprised?
I heard Tim Pawlenty was well financed and had a solid campaign. Considering that, he came in poorly -- guess he didn't spread cash around like MB did. It will be interesting to see how things stack up for the Iowa caucus and NH primary.
I lived in NH for many years ... it was quite a show when the candidates rolled into town. I think the early small state primary is a good thing -- a candidate can get grass roots support that builds, without spending so much money. At least that's how it was in years past. I remember video of Bill Clinton stumping in a cross-town aquaintance's living room. You get a different look at them when they are up close like that!

Michele Bachmann the IRS Attorney

http://echochambers.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/taxready.jpg?w=318&h=396
Bachmann's former employer doing what it does best: Shake down a hard-working American.

While presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann often touts her “federal tax litigation attorney” past, the WSJ digs a bit deeper: “Ms. Bachmann spent four years with the Internal Revenue Service district counsel office in St. Paul, Minn., from 1988 to 1992, and “worked on hundreds of civil and criminal cases,” according to her congressional website. This part of her resume cuts two ways for Ms. Bachman, who ranks near the top of the GOP field in polls of New Hampshire and Iowa, where she campaigned over the weekend. She’s a favorite of the tea party, for whom the IRS personifies government overreach.

Oh, and this very relevant tidbit:

“Bachmann, who is rising in the Iowa polls, does in fact have a resume that’s absurdly thin for someone seeking the White House. Ponder its shortcomings: she has no foreign policy experience, no executive experience, has never sponsored or co-sponsored a bill that became law, has never chaired a committee or subcommittee, and cannot even claim notable success outside the public sector like Mitt Romney. Why this doesn’t bother her supporters? They’re choosing the person who’ll preside over the Armed Forces, negotiate with foreign leaders, manage the bureaucracy, shepherd legislation through Congress, execute the nation’s laws, and otherwise fulfill the many obligations of the presidency. What makes them think she’s qualified?”

This is what the mainstream Tea Party supports, an IRS attorney. Color me amused.

How about Ron Paul, who has a thirty year track record of fighting tax increases, and Championing Economic Liberty!
