Thousands protest against Chinese chemical plant

Thousands of people demonstrated in northeastern China on Sunday, demanding the relocation of a petrochemical plant at the centre of a toxic spill scare, state media said.

Demonstrators in the port city of Dalian, in Liaoning province, faced down a wall of police in riot gear in front of the municipal government office and minor scuffles broke out, although there was no report of injuries, state news agency Xinhua said. (Reuters)

And, according to local officials and the state media, the Fujia petrochemical plant has begun it's shut down procedure-- although, no details were given for how long it was going to be closed, and what kind of time-line is being looked at for its' relocation.

It's a very surprising move for the Chinese government to give in to the demands of the protesters. Shocking, really!

Apparently, their decision is based on a "new style of political management" for social progress-- showing authorities to be more tolerant and responsive to public opinions and demands.

Interesting...
