I have no confirmation of the veracity of this. Just ran across this article...will try to update ASAP. Any help is much appreciated.
Power cuts threat as sun storm hits earth
A huge mass of electrically-charged particles thrown out by a gigantic eruption on the Sun is due to strike the Earth tonight.
Scientists expect it to trigger one of the most violent geomagnetic storms ever recorded.
The result could be widespread power surges and even blackouts, disrupted TV and mobile phone signals, and broken down communication satellites.
At the same time the Northern Lights, normally confined to polar latitudes, may produce dazzling displays in the skies above southern Britain.
At least one satellite has already been knocked out of action by the storm. Japan's space agency said its Kodama communications satellite had been temporarily shut down after malfunctioning.
The solar flare that caused the eruption burst out of a sunspot at 10.54am yesterday.
Experts said it was the strongest flare seen in the past 30 years. The explosion caused a coronal mass ejection (CME) which is now speeding towards Earth.
Disruption
Last week another CME only hit the Earth a glancing blow, yet was able to disrupt airline communications.
The solar flare was classified as an X18-category explosion, meaning it can trigger planet-wide radio blackouts and long-lasting radiation storms.
Although the charged particles present no direct danger to people on the ground, they could have a devastating effect on electrical equipment.
Geomagnetic storms are classified on a scale of one to five. Initial indications are that the looming storm could reach the highest G5 level and last for 24 hours.
Northern Lights
The most obvious manifestation of the storm is likely to be glorious auroras lighting up the night sky.
Usually the Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, is only visible in Britain from northern Scotland. The Earth's magnetic field channels the solar particles that cause auroras towards the poles.
But experts say that over the next two days the Northern Lights may be seen at latitudes as low as Florida and Texas - and even south enough to cover the whole of Europe.

I looked at soho and DANG that was a big massive bulk of energy the sun lobbed out at us. wooooh ! In my area we are expecting severe storms and it was 110 today. Even the daytime sky had a purple pinkish tint to it. Right now the weather channel is going crazy with weird weather clips happening right now, tornados/hail and another music stage in belgium collapsed it was raining like crazy there people running and screaming. I think all this crazy weather is because of the sun's burst of energy toward us. the dwarf star is passing the sun on our side and strangely enough the burst followed it's path and we are in the crosshairs. We are moving with elenin in tempo for the next few days.

Very suspicious that there's no date or sources listed in the article. Also, nothing is mentioned on spaceweather.com
I did some Googling and found a copy of the article dated last December:

However, I find it strange that no class M or X flares have been reported for the last two days (from http://www.solen.info/solar/):
Recent activity
The geomagnetic field was quiet to unsettled on August 17. Solar wind speed ranged between 374 and 445 km/s under the decreasing influence of a high speed stream from CH471.
Solar flux measured at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 97.5 (increasing 1.5over the last solar rotation). The planetary A index was 6 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 6.4). Three hour interval K indices: 31212111 (planetary), 31312121 (Boulder).
The background x-ray flux is at the class B2 level.
At midnight UTC the visible solar disk had 6 spotted regions (in 2K resolution SDO images).
Region 11271 was mostly unchanged and currently is relatively simple structured magnetically. Occasional C flares are possible. Flare: C3.4 at 10:42 UTC
Region 11272 was unstable and could produce further C class flares. Flares: long duration C1.9 peaking at 02:54, long duration C2.3 peaking at 04:29, C2.6 at 16:31 UTC
New region 11273 emerged in the southeast quadrant on August 16 and was numbered by SWPC the next day. The region has polarity intermixing.
Spotted regions not numbered by NOAA/SWPC:
[S1171] emerged near the northeast limb on August 16. Location at midnight: N07E60
[S1173] emerged in the northeast quadrant on August 17. Location at midnight: N23E37
[S1174] emerged in the southwest quadrant on August 17. Location at midnight: S17W28
Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)
August 15-17: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed in LASCO or STEREO imagery

Good find alamojo!
Indeed, the author as well as the "Last updated 13th December 2010" are missing from the headline. Whereas you would find it for the next article, scrolling down, on: http://2012realorfiction.blogspot.com/2010/12/news-is-very-quiet-at-moment-probably.html when clicking on the "Read more" link at the end of the article on "Metrodome."

Amzer Zo, you beat me to putting up the Cygnet Streamer...good for you! That is the only place I have found anything...and I have a huge list of resources I check....very suspicious, indeed!!!
I did find this intersting:
http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/ftpdir/latest/daypre.txt
All values predicted for Aug 21th are quite high, so something is definately coming our way.
But, WOW! alamojo.....WTCrap? So The Mail article is BS.....grrrr...I still don't understand why the Cygnet Streamer is showing that huge CME coming our way. I smell fish.....
Ghostrider, what did you see at SOHO???? Still have the link????

Interesting but please don't attempt to spread fear. We've had warnings of solar flares in the past and nothing catastrophic happened as far as I noticed. In any case, the human race can do with some technology wiped out for a bit.... *grin*

I was wondering where the almost migraine was coming from.
It is not so big that it is destabilizing me, so the storm won't be that bad.
If I was falling over and puking, with double vision, be afraid, be very afraid.
But I'm not.
My barometer has been perfect so far..so.. we shall see.
Edit:
It's coming right at us. Hmm. Interesting.
Cool beans, as they say.
And I don't even have any beer in the house.

I din't feel any fear while reading any of the posts in this thread , Where did you find fear.
And so far no light show here in austin Texas. and it's 10.46 right now.

It really is curious that no other sites indicate any solar flare activity but this one... simulation program gone wild? Bug bite?

I'm getting some feedback from Kerry ( i sent her link and she posted on her blog) that this article is from 2009.
Weird that it wasn't dated on the article.
Newspapers for you.
It's also been splashed all over the ALT media as current, so dunno, but when you click on the comments it says "We are no longer accepting comments on this article."
Me thinks maybe they are trying to get us all chasing our tails......

I just changed the title of this thread to "Alert! Sun Storm to hit Earth Tonight (old news - see Posts 7, 9) ", adding the "old news" parenthetical.
Thanks amaojo for your post #7 (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?28250-Alert--Sun-Storm-to-hit-Earth-Tonight--old-news-see-Posts-7-9-&p=287374&viewfull=1#post287374)

Research, research, research!

Thanks for all of the input, folks! As we approach the various timelines' "crucial" dates, we truely need this kind of collaboration in getting to the facts. I am so pleased that I have you dear people at Avalon (et al, since so many others are waking up as well) with whom to share my ravings. You all help me keep my feet on the ground and head on the level. lol
I do remember seeing the auroras of 2003 here in the Alps that time....fascinating and beautiful phenom! It was also a very intense time of my life....big changes going on at that time, both positive and some less positive..... but in the end, all for the better....
Come on sun...sock it to me again! lol
I am sorry if anyone felt fear because of this thread. Please don't. I am so eagerly waiting for "the changes"... something wonderful this way comes, IMO. I only fear for the uninformed and unprepared....but that is another story altogether, isn't it?
