Hello All,

This is about planned obsolesence.

Another scam rears it's ugly head. None of us here will be surprised. This is the first I've heard of this particular scam though.

Since 1901 a lightbulb in Ohio has burned continuously. The secret of the filament in the bulb died with the inventor (sound familiar?)

Watch to the end regarding a a modern day printer that needs to be replaced, something familiar to us all.:mmph:

Cheers,
Lily

That video was very interesting and informative, thanks Lily de CUIR.
Heard about that 100yr old light bulb, but, I,ve never heard about the Phoebus bunch or the 1000hr club before, incredible.
Nice to see what our business men are eagarly willing to do, to the population.
Unfortunetly, seeing thier, planned obsolesance, just doesn,t surprize me anymore.
Hope you are feeling better, lily.

Osram have had one burning since first WW Union carbide had lithium batteries well over 40 yrs ago.... the list is endless. Most replaceable products in mass production have a version which if brought to market would make buying replacements obsolete...

Sort of like why we don't have free electricity, cars that run on water etc.... its all old technology in a sense

G'day All,

I would just add to this discussion the 1932 Bernard London pamphlet 'Ending the Depression Through Planned Obsolescence' in which he states:

People everywhere are today disobeying the law of obsolescence. They are using their old cars, their old tires, their old radios and their old clothing much longer than statisticians had expected on the basis of earlier experience.

I reckon from this statement that the entire Permaculture movement is a movement of civil production disobedience!

:whoo::dance3:

London is often credited as being the originator of the term "planned obsolescence" and the pamphlet presents the introduction of obsolescence into production (as a means of increasing production and from this economic growth) during the Great Depression.

Also the book 'Made to Break: Technology and Obsolescence in America' by Giles Slade is an excellent read, for those so inclined, and has a large portion on the relatively new problems associated with "e-waste".

Kind Regards, :yo:

There is no secret to making filament light bulbs last longer. Better envalope vacuum, inert gas goes a long way to increasing lifetime. It's plainly obvious that manufacturers want repeat sales, so they build in obsolescence. Have you noticed how items seem to fail just outside the warrantee? And that repairing them costs more than a replacement? Apple get away with selling iphones ipods and ipads that cant be upgraded with memory or even a new battery and yet we still buy them. Probably with the intention of buying a new one when we outgrow it in a year.

We are born to do 2 things only PRODUCE and CONSUME

After watching the doc, I started getting suspicious of my soap as well. It struck me that the soap I make lasts way longer than the ones I get from the supermarket.

Would people be willing to pay more in order to be less of a (subjected) consumer?

Just look at all the bio-food for example. Whoever buys that stuff unless they're not so sick their doctor put them on a diet.

Thanks for posting, Lily,

I came across the same video some months ago and ... and it really made me angry to see how our planet's resources are being plundered for the sake of 'economic growth'.

BUT: What I wanted to point out here, the clip I saw went on a bit longer and finally the guy found a website where one can download a programm (for free, if I remember that right) that resets the printer's chip. And, surprises, surprise, the good old printer starts working again.

I'm away at the moment but once I'm home again, I'll post the details - I did write it down...just in case my printer decides it has too much ink in its sponge...

Here we go...
The info about what to do with the 'faulty' printer is in this segment.
It starts about 03:00 into the video and again at 12:00. But actually, the whole documentary is well worth watching.

I think its incredibly sad, that they built up the world to be like this all in the name of greed.

And now they're saying that if we try to change it , the world will collapse entirely.

I dont think this is true, i think we'd do just great in a society where a Dishwasher, Washing Machine or TV lasted for 30 years.

It would mean the end of the corporations reign over us, that's why they're so worried/desperate for this not to happen.

I say bring it on.

I've allways had hand-me-down things. When i was young i used to be ashamed of it, because i was bullied at school because of it. But now, i have no shame. I love it when my partner decides he's going to trim his wardrobe, i get first pick at all his clothes!!!

I do find it worrying tho, that his wardrobe is allmost 3 times the size of mine tho :P
