... 'huge property offer'
Former Labour Minister Lord Mandelson is understood to have made an offer to buy an £8 million house in one of London’s most exclusive districts.
The former Business Secretary, who once admitted the Labour Government was ‘intensely relaxed about people getting filthy rich’, is planning to buy the elegant four-storey Gothic Revival property, which features a wine cellar and two-storey atrium.
A source said he arrived to view the Grade II listed former almshouse by bicycle and has made a bid.
The source added that the offer had been accepted but contracts had not yet been exchanged.
It marks an astonishing rise in the fortunes of the controversial ex-Cabinet Minister, which appears to mirror the success of his close friend and confidant Tony Blair, who has made millions in his role as a consultant since quitting Downing Street.
The proposed purchase by Lord Mandelson raises serious questions about how he is able to pay for such a property.
