Oh my god. this is terrible news. The NDP is the only decent political party on this entire continent. F... cancer so much. I mean, I feel like I should be saying something about Layton as a person or something, but, really, I don't know much about him as a person.

All I know is that he was the most effective leader, ever, of the only intelligent and moral (But I repeat myself) Political party within thousands of miles of me, and it terrible that he won't be alive to be Prime Minister five years from now.

Remember, Jack was a rare politician...One for whom the message and the cause were more important than the election results.

Even though I trust no one in Politics, Jack might have been the exception...who knows, we will never find out.

A month ago... I was shocked by how bad he looked, how quickly... Looking like my husband...I really hoped it was the treatments doing such a number on him but, I was afraid...

It meant he didn't have much time left. I'm so sorry to hear my fear confirmed this morning, so soon after.

You know I was thinking this morning that now he knows. Now he knows the extent of the game he was playing being in politics.
I guess all this was chosen by him before coming here in this ife and so I can say that I find he did good and did what he set out to do.
I say this without knowing him personally, but it was clear to me that he was very passionate about what he was doing and so I see this as him living the life he was supposed to do.
I honor everyone that follows their passion, even if its being a politician...
So Jack, thank you for your presence with us, your passion and humanity, now you know fully what is rally happening with us all, Im sure we will see you again. Maybe at that time you will be able to reap the social efforts you planted in this last life and appreciate fully the fruits of your labour.

That the passing of someone I've never met could invoke such strong emotions in myself and so many others speaks volumes of the man.

He was a strong voice in Canadian politics. His energy and love for Canada will be missed.:rain:

My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.

All my very best,

Jack Layton

The big problem is that a Lyndon B Johnson may step in over the body of the recently lost Kennedy, if you pardon the overall comparison. The door is open for it. Thus the direct attempt will be made. Of that --there is no doubt. I'm sure the moves were planned long ahead of time.

Watch for some conservative minded backbencher to be elevated to the post of partly leader and thus get Quebec under the corporate thumb of the Federal Conservative types.

Jack was a man who cared about and for humanity all over the world but especially his homeland of Canada. His spirit and message will live on through those of us who loved him. May his family and friends find solace in his words, actions, and love while they grieve their loss at his passing. Love you Jack and know you are still here for us in spirit and more powerful than ever :)

Whatever happends from now on should steer us away from our own goals which is to have personal sovereigty and be active this way.
I think all of politics still has a few years to go but not in the right direction. There will always be followers but it won't be the road ahead.
More like a side road that keeps them busy while new paradigms are being layed out.

No, no Carmody !! At this point in our history, the Conservative party is a political machine built for the purpose of winning elections and then dismantling the governement. Meanwhile, the left wing is comprised of multiple parties, squabbling amongst each other, and rudderless (The other main opposition party, the Liberals, are currently between leaders as well) The NDP gained its' strength in a stunning sweep in Quebec, fuelled largely by Jack's own hard work and charisma. As a result, the opposition to one of the most cynical governements in the country's history is the youngest, most inexperienced party including five current university students. I feel pretty certain that Montrealers weren't voting for a 20 year old Cultural Studies major, they were voting for Jack.

My deepest condolences to you and me Sandy. I'm sending you all a hug, and since you seem to have lasagna and butter tarts, a bottle of whisky to wash it all down. I hope some day that we to the South will be privileged enough to have had a political leader worthy of mourning this way.

I voted for Jack... an honest man. Here's my favourite Jack quote, when asked if he had ever smoked pot... "Yes, and some might say I never exhaled."
RIP an honest man.

Lets just legalize it and get on to some real issues.
