NEW YORK (BNO NEWS) — A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck the Indian Ocean on early Sunday, seismologists said, prompting a tsunami watch for several countries.
The 7.7-magnitude earthquake at 1.26 a.m. local time (1926 UTC Saturday) was centered about 157 kilometers (98 miles) west-southwest of Misha on India’s Nicobar Islands. It struck about 35 kilometers (21.7 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the United States Geological Survey.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center immediately issued a tsunami watch for India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia. “Earthquakes of this size have the potential to generate a destructive local tsunami and sometimes a destructive regional tsunami along coasts located usually no more than a thousand kilometers from the earthquake epicenter,” the center said.
