Dutch radical gets Lib backing

ULTRA-CONSERVATIVE Liberal senator Cory Bernardi has provoked outrage by offering to help controversial anti-Islam Dutch politician Geert Wilders during his visit to Australia.

Mr Wilders - whose Freedom Party holds the balance of power in the Dutch parliament - has gained prominence for comments such as ''the Koran is an inspiration for intolerance, murder and terror'', calling the prophet Muhammad a paedophile and comparing the Koran to Hitler's Mein Kampf. He was refused entry to the UK in 2009, which was overturned on appeal.
''I see Islam as more an ideology than a religion. It's not to be compared with Christianity or Judaism; it's more compared with other totalitarian ideologies like communism or fascism,'' Mr Wilders told the ABC's Foreign Correspondent.
Norwegian gunman Anders Breivik mentioned Mr Wilders 30 times in his manifesto. Mr Wilders said he hoped to visit Australia within the next year.

Senator Bernardi ate with Mr Wilders in May during a European trip to study the impact of immigration on Western nations.
''He did indicate that he was considering coming to Australia and I extended an invitation to assist him with his schedule or arranging appropriate meetings,'' Senator Bernardi said.
A second statement issued after media scrutiny said Senator Bernardi would be ''happy to return the same courtesy he had shown me over lunch. I wish to make it very clear that neither I nor the Coalition are organising a visit to Australia by Mr Wilders.''
It is understood some moderate Coalition MPs renewed calls for the outspoken senator to be dumped from the frontbench. He is parliamentary secretary to Mr Abbott.
One Liberal said sacking him would make him a martyr and said it would be better if he were dumped at the end of the year when Mr Abbott is expected to undertake a minor frontbench reshuffle. ''Cory has crossed the line,'' the MP said.
Labor backbencher Rob Mitchell said: ''If Senator Bernardi idolises this man, which it seems he does, he can go sit in that gutter with Geert and together they can fantasise about spreading their hate and loathing where it belongs.''
Greens Multicultural spokesman Richard di Natale said that while his party was often called extremist, ''it is pretty clear who the extremists are in Australian politics''.
Islamic Council of Victoria secretary Sherene Hassan said it was deplorable that an elected politician from a major political party was cosying up to the European far right.
''Especially given the tragic terrorist attacks that took place in Norway recently. Is this the future direction of the Liberal Party?'' she said.
