"New York's top policeman says he is worried Al Qaeda may try to attack the city on the 10th anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks.

Commissioner Raymond Kelly says documents found in the compound in which Osama bin Laden was killed in May revealed plans for attacks marking the event.

He says police believe terrorist groups may be conducting reconnaissance of New York on a daily basis.

I am reaching out to everyone in hope to send some courage and calm waves. It does feel like the calm before the storm - but we will all be fine. Breathe in the positive and breathe out the negatives.

Its been weeks now that the Australian media has been bombarding us with images of 9/11 and stories of survivors or of families whom have lost their loved ones in the attack.

Are they taking our attention away from the real target now?

My heart aches every time I see these images but I try not to get stuck in it - don't want it to condition my reality.

WASHINGTON — Federal officials are investigating a credible threat surrounding the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, NBC News reported Thursday.

Two U.S. officials said intelligence picked up a threat that is of some concern, one that has more credibility attached to it than the rest of the increasing chatter picked up in the past few days.

U.S. sources described it as a "specific, credible threat" — the first received in relation to the 9/11 anniversary.

"It is not imminent, it is not confirmed," said one U.S. official, who asked not to be identified.

An administration official told NBC News the threat "so far" was a 5 to 6 on a scale of 10.

WNBC learned that intelligence from overseas in the Pakistan area indicates limited threat information about car bombs as well as bridges and tunnels. The intelligence is not specific to individuals and is of questionable veracity, but officials are taking it seriously and running it to ground.

The threat would target New York City or Washington, D.C., but other cities could not be ruled out, sources said. Authorities have obtained what they believe is information on possible suspects tied to central al-Qaida, but they have not necessarily determined names of possible suspects.


A U.S. official told NBC News that specific threat information came in "very, very recently," but would not say exactly when.

The official said that this threat "does appear to be tied to the period of the 10th anniversary" of 9/11.

The official said that the information was specific enough to warrant an advisory to the American people, but it is still unclear whether the plot is about to unfold.

The official would not say who specifically is behind the plot, but did say that "Al Qaeda and its affiliates have shown interest in milestone events and dates."


"U.S. counter-terror agencies are taking it very seriously," the official said, adding, "the federal government is coordinating with state and local agencies to make people aware of this potential threat."

"This is being treated very seriously at all levels of government," the official said.

U.S. officials are considering issuing a statement on the threat after the President Barack Obama's jobs speech.

One official told NBC News that discussions are under way about whether to raise the threat warning status, but no decision has been made.

Earlier Thursday, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said "in the intel world there is lots of chatter and we are taking it very seriously." However, there is no information about a specific threat.

Napolitano said Homeland Security would warn the public if a threat arose.

The threat was revealed as officials said they already were adding thousands of extra police, cameras and weapons around New York, Washington, and western Pennsylvania for Sept. 11 anniversary attacks.

Documents found in Osama bin Laden's compound after he was killed May 1 by Navy SEALS urged his followers to attack on Sept. 11, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly told a Manhattan Institute conference on terrorism, the New York Daily News reported.

Although no credible information about an attack has surfaced since then, Kelly said, he told the group police are not taking any chances for a Sunday observance at the World Trade Center that Obama and former President George W. Bush plan to attend.

Kelly said Ground Zero would be surrounded by a frozen zone. Thousands of cops will be on duty, some carrying radiation detectors and sniper rifles. Extra attention will be given to the subway system, especially Grand Central Terminal, Penn Station and Herald Square.

Hundreds of surveillance cameras will monitor the site.

"We don't presume Ground Zero alone is a potential target," Kelly said, outlining procedures. "That would be short-sighted.

Kelly said quick-reaction forces will be assigned outside lower Manhattan.

The Co-Chair of the Congressional Inquiry into 9/11 and former Head of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Bob Graham, previously stated that an FBI informant had hosted and rented a room to two hijackers in 2000 and that, when the Inquiry sought to interview the informant, the FBI refused outright, and then hid him in an unknown location, and that a high-level FBI official stated these blocking maneuvers were undertaken under orders from the White House (confirmed here).

Today, Graham called for a new 9/11 investigation. As Raw Story notes:



Graham on Monday called on the U.S. government to reopen its investigation into 9/11 after a report found that links between Saudi Arabia and the hijackers were never disclosed by the FBI to the 2002 joint Congressional intelligence committee investigating the attacks.

“In the final report of the congressional inquiry, there was a chapter related primarily to the Saudi role in 9/11 that was totally censored, every word of the chapter has been withheld from the public,” Graham said on MSNBC’s The Dylan Ratigan Show.

“Some of the other questions we ought to be asking are if we know that the Saudis who lived in San Diego and now apparently in Sarasota received substantial assistance, what about the Saudis who lived in Phoenix, Arizona? Or Arlington, Virginia? … What was happening in those places?”

“I believe these are questions for which there are definitive answers, but the American people and largely their elected representatives have been denied that information.”

■Senator Mike Gravel – who was the main congressman responsible for making the Pentagon Papers public – calls for a new 9/11 investigation
■Congressman Ron Paul calls for a new 9/11 investigation and states that “we see the [9/11] investigations that have been done so far as more or less cover-up and no real explanation of what went on”
■Congressman Dennis Kucinich wants a new investigation

■Congressman Jason Chafetz says that we need to be vigilant and continue to investigate 9/11

Peck), and former US Department of State Foreign Service Officer (J. Michael Springmann), as well as a who’s who of liberals and independents) jointly call for a new investigation into 9/11

I think TPTW want us to forget about it, too. Thankfully, there are people coming forward now; and more evidence is coming to light. They're brave souls to do this.... Even some of the politicians are coming around....This is a good sign...
